Para probar una hipótesis hay que diseñar un procedimiento para tomar
una muestra aleatoria y calcular un estadístico de prueba apropiada con
objeto de rechazar o no la hipótesis nula H0. Parte de este
procedimiento consiste en especificar el conjunto de valores del
estadístico de prueba que conduzcan al rechazo de H0. Este conjunto de
valores se denomina región crítica o región de rechazo de la prueba.

S12 y S22 son las dos variancias muéstrales individuales. Hay que
comparar t0 con respecto a la distribución t con n1 + n 2 - 2 grados de
libertad, para decidir si se rechaza H0: 1 = 2. Se debe rechazar H0 y
concluir que el nivel medio de la resistencia a la tensión para las dos
fórmulas de mortero de cemento Pórtland difieren si to > to/2, n1 + n2 –2,
donde to/2, n1 + n2 –2 es el punto porcentual /2 superior de la distribución t
con n1 + n2 -2 grados de libertad.
