Lucy Gray wasn’t an ordinary 17-year-old giri. She ¡md a
special talent; she could sometimes see and talk to
ghosts. Lucy hated her unusual powers and tried to keep
them a secret. The students at Forest Park High School
didn’t like Lucy. They called her “Spooky Lucy” and they
laughed at her behind her back.
Lucy’s mother was worried because her daughter didn’t

It was 5th Juiy and the students were at the
Baltirnore/Washington International Airport, waiting to
get their boarding cards and seats on the plane. Helena
Holbrook, a popular girl with long red hair, was next to

asked for a seat next to Lucy. Helena gaye Lucy an angry

Qn the plane, Lucy and Paul sat in front of Mr Jones and

Canadian frontier. Lucy looked out of the window at the
green hilis far below. The roads and rivers were now just
thin unes, and the lakes shone like silver.
There were television screens aboye the seats, and they
showed a documentary about Greenland. Lucy and Paul
were watching two polar bears on the screen when Mrs
Gordon touched Lucy’s shoulder. ‘Took out of the
window,” she said.
They looked out at a beautiful sunset. There was a red

The airport was next to a fiord with a small harbour. The
air outside was cool and fresh and the midnight sun was
shining. “Wow! Sun at midnight!” said one of the boys.
“That’s very strange!”

Jones. “Iri the winter, it doesn’t shine ar ali and
sometimes there are coioured lights in the sky. People

A cruise ship was waiting for the group at the harbour.

travel to the east coast of Greenland,” he said. “The trip
will take three days. We are now sailing along Eric’s
Fiord. The famous Viking explorer, Erie the Red, stopped
at this part of the fiord, and built a home on the other
side of the river. At the end of the trip, we’ll return to
Eric’s Fiord and visit
Viking farm. Most of you are sharing a cabin. Collect your
cabiri keys from the reception desk and then go to sieep.
I’m sure you’re ah very tired. We’re meeting for
breakfast in tire restaurant at half past eight in the
morning, so please arrive on time.”
Before they went to their cabins, Paul pufled Lucy’s hand
and took her to the front deck to see the view. They
could see desolate green hills on both sides of the fiord.

seals. A few minutes later, they noticed sorne seals
diving frorn the rocks into the fiord.
That evening, it started lo ram and the wind became
stronger. Everybody sat inside and talked. Lucy looked at
a map of Greenland and marked the ship’s route with a
pen.
Suddenly, Lucy heard a strange noise outside. She called
Paul and they went out onto the deck. The noise was
louder now.
“What’s that noise?” she asked Paul.
“It sounds like a ship’s horn,” he replied.
They looked out to sea. The evening sun was shining over
the waves and lighting up the rocks next to the beach.
They couldn’t hear the horn now, only the sound of the
ship moving slowly ihrough the waves. Sometirnes, Ihere
was a low sound from an iceberg, as a piece of ice broke
off and then floated away. A coid, wet wind blew into
their faces.
Suddenly, Paul pointed out to sea. “Look at that!” he
said. There was a long, grey shape in the water. It looked
like
a Viking ship with a big, square mast and a dragon’s head
at the front.
‘Look at that ,Paul said
“That’s a Viking ship!” exclaimed Lucy. “But that’s
impossible!”
“Maybe ít’s a ghost ship,” said Paul with a smile un his
face. He started to laugh.
Lucy was very angry. “Are you laughing al me, loo?” she

“Maybe it rvas a mirage,” suggested Paul. “An optical
illusion.” Lucy was perpiexed. “1 lhought people only see
mirages in the desert,” she said.
“No, you can see a mirage in any open place,” explained
Paul. “People often see niirages at sea, especially during
a storm. The liglir shhes tbrough the ram and makes
shapes. It’s just an illusion.”
The wind moved the ship from side lo side. Paul’s face
suddenly became white.
“Are you OK?” asked Lucy.
“No, I’rn not,” said Paul. “fm feeling seasick. I’m going to
Ile on my bed.”
“OK,” said Lucy. “Feel better soon. I’ll see you
tomorrow.”
Lucy stayed on the deck for a few minutes, watching the
strange mirage. Bm soon, it stopped raining and the dark
shape disappeared. She went down the stairs to her
cabin.
Suddenly, Ihe lights on the stairs went out and Lucy was
in the dark. She heard a voice, and a dark figure
appeared in front of her.
“1 can’t find my cabin,” said a low, weak voice. It was an
oid man in white pyjamas.
“Oh, no!” thought Lucy. “There are ghosts on the ship!”
‘Oh, no” thought Luc “Thee are ghosts u the sfrp”
“1 can’t find my cabin. Oh, dear! What am 1 going to
do?” said the figure again.
“If 1 don’t talk tu the ghosl, it will follow me everhere,”
thought Lucy. “I’ll try lo help him.”
“Which deck is your cabin on?” asked Lucy.
“1 can’t remember,” said the figure.
“Oh, no. This isn’t going tobe easy,” thought Lucy. “ls it
downstairs or upstairs?” she asked.
“1 think it’s downstairs,” the figure said.
“Come with me and we’ll try to find it,” Lucy said. She
walked slowly down the stairs in ihe dark to the lowest
floor. Then, the figure followed her along the corridor.
“ls it ere?” askd Lucy. There vasn’t a reply. Lucy turned
around, butthefigue wasn’t behind her ány more. “Good!
The ghost left,” she touht. Aftrthat, she went to her
cabin.
The nextday, Paul stayed in his cabin until lunch. Then,
he carne to th dining room to findLucy. She was sitting in

Their ship was rnoving further and further away from
them. Paul started to panic and he moved his arms and
legs. “Don’t move!” Lucy shouted. “1 can’t hoid you!”
“Help me!” cried Paul. “I’m going to drown!” He threw
his arms around Lucy’s neck and pushed her under the
water.
Suddenly, a coid, black shadow appeared aboye thern
and sornething touched Lucy’s arm. It was a wooden oar.
Lucy and Paul grabbed the oar and somebody pulled
them out of the water. Aboye the water, they saw a long
wooden ship with a dragon’s head and a red and white
rnast.
“This isn’l a mirage,” said Lucy. “It’s a Viking ship!”

Paul was trying to breathe. “1 don’t care!” he said
between breaths. “Quickly! Let’s climb onto it!”

“1 saw one of the passengers,” said Lucy. “She was
jumping into the sea and 1 tried to stop her.”
“So, where is she 110w?” asked Paul. “Did she drown?”
They looked around them. They were on a very old ship,
with lots of broken seats. The large, square mast was
dirty and torn.
“how is this happening?” asked Lucy, “We’re Qn an
ancient Viking ship in the 2lst century!”
“Maybe it’s from a rnuseum,” said Paul. “We’re lucky we
found it.”
“We didn’t find this ship,” said Lucy. “It found us.”
“Huh? i think you’re right!” exclairned Paul. “That’s
really frightening. A ship thai sails around Qn its own!”
“It’s a ghost ship!” said Lucy. “I’m responsibie for this!”
A coid wind was blowing, but the ship wasn’t moving.
“Come on,” Paul said. “There are oars. Wc must try to
reach the land.”
They each took an oar and tried to row, but the ship
didn’t move.
“We’ll never move the ship without help,” said Paul,
weakly. “It probably takes fifty men to row this thing!”
“What can we do now?” asked Lucy.
“We’ll wait for thc cruise ship to return br us,” said Paul.
“But they won’t know that we’re missing,” said Lucy. “Mr
Jones thinks you’re iii and in your cabin and I’in not
sharing a cabin with anybody. Are you?”
“No, I’m riot,” Paul replied. “You’re right. They won’t
look for ns”
“They’re only returning from the trip tomorrow
morning,” said Lucy. “But we’ll probably freeze to death
by then.”
They looked through the wooden door. The girl with the
blue dress was standing opposite the door, watching
thern. Paul jumped in horror. “How did you ...? Where
did you come from?” he asked. The girl laughed.
“That’s the girl from our cruise ship,” said Lucy. “She’s a
ghost!”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” said Paul in a low voice.
“Are you OK?” Paul asked the giri. He tried to take her
hand, but his hand went straight through her.
“Huh! She is a ghost!” shouted Paul. “Let’s get out of
here!” He was terrified.
“We can’t leave,” Lucy said. “We’re on a ship!”

“Anglo-Saxons! Why are you on my ship?” the ghostly
figure asked in a loud voicc. “Leave my ship,
iminediately!”
Now, Lucy was very frightencd, Loo.
The fog disappcared and Lucy and Paul could see the
male ghosl clearly. He was the most frightening ghost of
all. 1-le had brighl, red hair and shiny blue eyes. There
was a horn in one of his hands and a sword in the other.
“It’s Eric the Red!” whispered
Paul, tremblingwithfear. Several other dark figures
appeared at the front of the ship. They were Viking
warriors.
“1-cave my ship. 1 said!” shouted the ghost in a loud,
angry voice.
Paul and Lucy stood up and moved slowly to the back of
the ship.
The wind blew Paul across the ship and he hit his head
on the side.
“Are you OK?” asked Lucy in terror.
“Don’t hurt them, father” said Freydis. “They’re my
friends.”
Eric the Red looked at his daughter and in an instant the
anger disappeared from his eyes. “My dear little
Freydis,” he said. “1 will do anything to make you happy.
Are these Anglo-Saxons your friends? Then, they must
stay here with you.”
“But we don’l want to be here,” said Lucy. “Wc want to
return to our ship.”
The Viking turned to Lucy, angrily. “My daughter wants
it, so you will stay!” he shouted.
“We’re in serious trouble now!” exclaimed Paul. “We’re
prisoners on a ghost ship and nobody will ever find us!”
“Don’t worry,” said Lucy. “Maybe we can escape.”
“How?” asked Paul. “Wc must escape from this ship!”
“Ghosts usua1l appear because they want our help,” said

The Viking warriors moved forward and a strong wind

noise!” he shouted. “It’s horrible!”

Freydis sat on the floor of the ship. Her blonde hair and
white skin shone and there was a sad look in her eyes.

“In the past, my father hived in Tceland,” Freydis said.
“But he didn’t want to stay there because he did
something very bad.”

“He fought two men and killed them,” replied Freydis.
“So he left Iceland on a ship and travelled wcst. He
arrived at an enormous island with ice everywhere. He
explored the island until he found a fiord wíth green hills
on either side arid he built a farrn there.”
“Thai was Eric’s Fiord,” said Paul.
“That’s right,” replied Freydis. “My father gaye the fiord
his name.”
“What happened to your father after that?” asked Lucy.
“A few years later, my father decided to bring more
people to populate the island,” she said. “So he returned
to Iceland lo teil people about it. But he didn’t idi them

“What happened?” asked Lucy.

there was hardly any ice,” said Freydis. “He called the
island Greenland, so everybody believed that it was a
beautiful, grcen land. Many people returned with my

“Did the people kill your father?” asked Paul.
“No, they didn’ t,” replied Freydis. “They didn’t have the
opportunity. There was a terrible illness in our village and
many people died. My father and 1 became iii, loo. We
both died on the sarne day.”

It was late afternoon. The Viking ship was sailing quickly
to the south. There werc only a few icebergs in the sea
now aud the air was getting warmer. A large whalc was
swimming in front of the ship. “Maybe it’s showing us
the way,” thought Lucy, with a smile.
Lucy and Paul were sitting at the back and the ship was
fuli of ghosts. There were lots of Vikings with oars in their
hands, and Erie the Red was at the front.
“Wc rnust go further south,” said Lucy. “Please, row
faster.”
“Row faster!” Erie the Red ordered his men. “Faster!”
Lucy knew they were near their destination because the
sun was beginning to set.
Paul was very worried. “Where are we going?” he asked.
“Why are you taking us further south? Wc need to go
north and return to Greenland.”
“The nights are darker further south,” Lucy toid Paul.
“There’ll be a sunset soon. If we’re lucky, we’ll see a
noctilucent cloud.”
Suddenly, Paul understood Lucy’s plan. “A sun cloud!” he
said with a smile. “You’re a genius!”
The sky became darker and the ship continued sailing
south. They were far frorn Greenland, but there wasn’t a
noctilucent cloud anysvhere. Thc ghosts were becoming
angry and irnpatient.
“Retuín to the coast!” cried one Viking warrior.
“We’ll get lost in tisis sea!” shouted another.
Finally, Erie turned bis angry eyes on Lucy. “You líed,

ship wasn’t touching the sea. It was flying! Four
dolphins appeared in the watcr below. They followed the
ship for a while, and then they disappeared. Paul had a
very high temperature and he was lying on the deck with
his eyes cinsed. Lucy covereci him with blankets. “He
needs a doctor, imrnediately,” she thought. “The ghosts
are returning to Eric’s farm now. 1 hope we’ll arrive on
time to meet the cruise ship.” She lay next to him and
closed her eyes.
Lucy woke at about seven o’clock in the morning. She
and Paul were alone on the Viking ship. They were
travelling along Eric’s fiord. A big cruise ship was
travelling slowly towards them. Lucy pulled Paul’s arm.
“Wake Hp!” she shouted. “It’s our cruise ship and it’s
going to hit us!” Paul opened his eyes and pushed her
away. He was delirious. Don’t touch me!” he cried. “You
cant hurt me — youre a ghost!”
“Paul! It’s me — Lucy!” she shouted. “Quickly! Wc must
leave the ship and swim!”
“I’m Loo ill and 1 can’l swim!” answcred Paul weakly.
The ghost ship wasn’t touching the sea. It was flying!
The cruise ship was closer. She pulled Paul to the side
and climbed up. Paul climbed weakly after her.
“Come on, jump!” Lucy shouted. She took Paul’s hand
and pulled him into the sea.
The cruise ship’s horn sounded and the motor stopped.
The ship started to change directiun. Lucy swam on her
back and pulled Paul through the water.
Suddenly, she hit her head on sorne floating ice and she
went under the sea.
“Wake up!” Lucy shouted. “Its our cruise ship cinci it’.s
going to hit us!”
Paul opened his cyes. He was on a bed on the cruise ship
and a nurse was standing next to him. “ls she a ghost?”
he thought. Thc nurse louched his head and he felt her
warm hand. “No, she’s definitely not a ghost!” he

“Good, it’s normal,” she said. “Your temperature has
gane down. You don’t need to go to thc medical centre.”
“Where’s Lucy?” asked Paul.
“She’s right here,” replied ihe nurse. “She probably
jumped in to save you. She’s a vcry brave giri.”
Lucy was lying in a bed in the comer of the room. Her
eyes were closed and her face was white.
“Poor girl!” said the nurse. “ She hit her head un the ice,
but she’s OK now. She’s sleeping.”
Paul was very worried about Lucy. “Are you ccrtain she’ll
be OK?” he asked, in a panic.
“She’s fine,” replied the nurse. “She woke befare and she
was asking about you. We’re at Narsarsuaq harbour now
and an ambulance is going to take her to the medical
centre for tests. They just want to be certain everything’s
OK befare she continuos the trip.”
There wcre voices outside and the nurse left the room.
Paul got out of bcd and stood next to Lucy. He looked at
her calm face.
“Was it really ah a drearn?” he thought.

They talked about the hot springs, the Inuit village and
the glacier. “ Sorry you weren’t there,” said Helena
Holbrook. “Wc didn’t know you were so 111.”
Paul didn’t want to talk to anybody. He was thinking
about Lucy. When everybody left, he decided to find his
clothes. He was going to visit Lucy at the medical centre.
He put on lis clothes and left the clinic. Mr Jones was
outside, talking to the nurse.
Suddenly, the ship began to move.
“No, stop the ship. 1 havc to see Lucy,” said Paul.
“You’ll see her when she’s feeling beiter,” said Mr Jones.
“You should be in bed. You’re still very weak.”
“1 feel OK, now,” said Paul. “Where are we going?”
“To Erie the Red’s Farm,” Mr Jones replied. “It’s the lasi
slop Qn the cruise. Then, wc’re going to travel around
Greenland.”
Mr Jones saw the worried look on Paul’s face. “Don’t
worry about Lucy,” he said. “ She’s fine, and Mrs Gordon
is with her. Now, relax and enjoy the rest of the trip.”
Mr Jones had a brochure of the Viking farm in his hand.
Therc was a picture of Erie the Red on the cover. He
looked very impressive. Paul remembered the furious
face of the Viking ghost and trembled. “He didn’t look
like that in my drcam,” he thought.
Two hours later, the ship stopped al a small harbour. The
students followed Mr Jones off tire ship. “Erie the Red
built a farm here,” said Mr Jones. “Look at the stones on
the ground. They’re the ruins of Viking houses and a
church. The Vilcings built the church in 1000 AD.”
Everybody followed Mr Jones to sorne rocks near the
harbour. Behind the rocks, there was an oid wooden ship
with a dragon’s head. It was identical to the ship in Paul’s
dream. There was even an area at the back with chains
on the deck. Paul couldn’t believe it!
“This is an oid replica of a Viking ship,” said Mr Jones.
“According to a local legend, the Vikings still haunt the

fiord, and the water was tranquil and calm.

Freydis are here now. 1 can feel their presence.”
