KEEPING A CONVERSATION GOING

(Manteniendo una conversación)

 We often use short questions to keep a conversation going and to
show interest.
(A menudo usamos preguntas cortas para mantener una conversación
y mostrar interés.)

 How’s (it) doing? (= Are you enjoying it or being successful at

it?)
¿Cómo te va? (= ¿Lo estás disfrutando o tienes éxito en ello?)

 Why’s that? (= What’s the reason?)

¿Por qué es eso? (= ¿Cuál es la razón?)

 Like what, exactly? (= Can you give me an example?)

¿Cómo qué, exactamente? (= ¿Puedes darme un ejemplo?)

 How do you mean? (= Can you explain this more clearly?)

¿A qué te refieres? (= ¿Puede explicar esto más claramente?)

 What’s (the teacher) like? (= what’s your opinion of him /

her?)
¿Cómo es el profesor? (= ¿Cuál es su opinión sobre él / ella?)

 What else are you doing? (= Are you doing other things too?)
¿Qué más estás haciendo? (= ¿Estás haciendo otras cosas
también?)

 Such as? (= Can you give me an example?)

¿Como? (= ¿Puedes darme un ejemplo?)

 How come? (= Why? / What’s the reason?)

¿Cómo? (= ¿Por qué? / ¿Cuál es la razón?)

 In what way? (= Can you explain this more clearly?)

¿En qué manera? (= ¿Puede explicar esto más claramente?)

 What sort of (dancing)? (= Can you be more specific?)

¿Qué tipo de baile? (= ¿Puedes ser más específico?)
Tips:
 In informal English, we also use “How’s it going?” as a greeting:
(En inglés informal, también usamos "¿Cómo te va?" como un
saludo.)

Hi, Andy. How’s it going? (= how are you?)

Hola, andy. Como te va? (= ¿como estas?)

 We can also say “Who else…?” and “Where else…?”

(También podemos decir "¿Quién más...?" Y "¿Dónde más ...?")

Who else are you going with?  ¿Con quién más vas?
Where else are you going?  ¿A dónde más vas?

 We can say “What sort of…?”, “What kind of…?” and “What type
of…?”
(Podemos decir "¿Qué tipo de...?", "¿Qué tipo de...?" Y "¿Qué tipo
de...?")

What sort / kind / type of course?  ¿Qué tipo de curso?

QUESTIONS WITH PREPOSITIONS

 We often make short questions with “question word + preposition”
CHLOE: I go every week (Voy cada semana)
SOPHIE: Really? Who with? (¿En serio? ¿Con quién?)

SOPHIE: I'm off to the USA on Sunday. (Me estoy yendo a Estados
Unidos el domingo.)
CHLOE: Are you? how long fo? (¿Lo estas? ¿Por cuanto tiempo?)

Tips:
 In these types of short questions, both the question Word and the
prepositions are stressed.
(En este tipo de preguntas cortas, tanto la palabra de pregunta como
las preposiciones se destacan.)
 The most common questions words for these types of question are
“who, where and what”:
(Las preguntas más frecuentes para este tipo de preguntas son
"quién, dónde y qué")

A. I’m going away. (Me estoy yendo.)

B. Where to? (¿A donde?)

A. I talked to Vicky. (Hablé con Vicky)

B. What about? (¿Qué tal?)

 We often use “What for?” as an alternative to “why?”

(A menudo usamos "¿Para qué?" Como una alternativa a "¿por
qué?")

A. I’m going into town. (Voy a la ciudad.)

B. What for? (¿Para qué?)

 We also use echo questions (CHLOE: It’s even more difficult than
creative writing. SOPHIE: Is it?) and questions with questions tags
(It’s been ages, hasn’t it?) to keep a conversation going.
(También usamos las preguntas de eco (CHLOE: Es aún más difícil
que la escritura creativa, SOPHIE: ¿Lo es?) Y las preguntas con
etiquetas de preguntas (Ha sido edades, ¿no?) Para mantener una
