Every year, around October, with the arrival of the rainy season, red
crabs are preparing for their great migration, a legendary and
impressive show that has taken to these islands a multitude of
scientists, photographers and lovers of the nature.
At this time, it is estimated that about 120 million red crabs come out
of their lairs and move through the forest floor, walking up to 8 km in
just 5 days. His progress is unstoppable; Before them they are not
worth obstacles of any kind, nor the cliffs nor the roads, which
sometimes have to close due to the measures of protection to the
species and the vehicles themselves.
This migration takes the crabs directly to the coast, where they
immediately immerse themselves in the water to replenish the body
moisture and lost salts. The males dig burrows on the ground, where
they mate with the females, then the males return to the forest, leaving
the females in the den incubating the eggs.
