EL CANGREJO ROJO DE LAS ISLAS CHRISTMAS

El cangrejo rojo de las islas Christmas es un crustáceo de hábitos terrestres

endémico de estas islas del océano Índico. Vive en el interior de los bosques
tropicales, siempre en sitios húmedos. Son omnívoros, o sea que se alimentan
de alimentos de origen animal o vegetal.

Cada año, aproximadamente en el mes de octubre, con la llegada de la

temporada de lluvias, los cangrejos rojos se preparan para su gran migración, un
espectáculo legendario e impresionante que ha llevado a estas islas a multitud
de científicos, fotógrafos y amantes de la naturaleza.

En esta época, se estima que alrededor de 120 millones de cangrejos

rojos salen de sus guaridas y se desplazan por el suelo del bosque, caminando
hasta 8 km en sólo 5 días. Su avance es imparable; ante ellos no valen
obstáculos de ningún tipo, ni los acantilados ni las carreteras, las cuales en
ocasiones hay que cerrar debido a las medidas de protección a la especie y a
los propios vehículos.

Esta migración, lleva a los cangrejos directamente a la costa, donde al llegar se

sumergen de inmediato en el agua para así reponer la humedad del cuerpo y las
sales perdidas. los machos cavan unas madrigueras en el suelo, donde se
aparearán con las hembras, luego los machos retornan al bosque, dejando a las
hembras en la madriguera incubando los huevecillos.
The red crab of the Christmas Islands is a crustacean of terrestrial
habits endemic to these islands of the Indian Ocean. It lives inside the
