The first person I saw as I returned from my holidays was my
grandfather. He opened the front door for me and stood there,
looking me up and down in amazement. I went into the living room
and sank exhausted into an armchair. I was hard put to explain my
appearance. I was pale, unshaven, dirty and tired out after my
journey.

The Cherry Trees of Washington, D.C.

When you think about the things that attract millions of visitors to Washington, D.C., each
year, you probably think about the monuments, the White House, the Capitol, the Library
of Congress. But have you ever thought about the living things that are also a major tourist
attraction?

Many Americans and international tourists make a special visit to Washington, D.C., in the
spring to see the blooming pink and white Japanese cherry trees that circle the Tidal Basin
and the Jefferson Memorial. The trees were originally planted as a gift from the people of
Tokyo, Japan, in 1912. In 1910, a previous donation of 2,000 cherry trees had to be
destroyed after they were infested with insects. Each spring, the National Cherry Blossom
Festival, a two-week-long celebration, attracts tens of thousands of visitors from around the
world to see the magnificent trees in full bloom.

Have you ever seen these magnificent blossoms?

Pumas are large, cat-like animals which are found in America. When reports
came into London Zoo that a wild puma had been spotted forty-five miles
south of London, they were not taken seriously. However, as the evidence
began to accumulate, experts from the Zoo felt obliged to investigate, for the
descriptions given by people who claimed to have seen the puma were
extraordinarily similar.

Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he
has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock
repaired. The big clock which used to strike the hour day and night
was damaged during the war and has been silent ever since.

Perhaps some new idea about his furniture had just occurred to

Expectancy

When my wife was expecting our baby last year, things went on quite
normally in our household. Shes a very healthy woman and after all the tests
she underwent at the hospital, the doctor told her that she could go on
working. There was, however, one difficulty. During practically the whole
nine months, she couldnt stop eating chocolates. She used to eat them at any
time; before breakfast was served, before lunch, in the evening and sometimes
in the middle of the night. Often I would ask her: Shall I go out and look for
a shop? The supplies you kept in the cupboard are all gone. She would most
of the times answer: Since youre so kind dear, Ill probably need something
sweet once Im in bed. I can lend you some money in case youve run out of
it.I was very glad when the baby was born and she returned to her normal
diet.
