JOINTS

Joints are the junctions (meeting places called articulations) between bones or between cartilage
and bone. There are two main kinds of joints: (1) those (called synarthroses) with little or no
movement and without a cavity; and (2) those (called diarthroses) with varying degrees of free
movement and with a cavity between their surfaces that contains a lubricating fluid (synovial
fluid).

Examples of the synarthroses are the joints between the tibia and fibula, with slight movement
(syndesmosis, bound by ligaments of fibrous connective tissue); those at the junctions of the two
hip bones (the pubic symphysis), with slight movement (synchondrosis, bound by hyaline
cartilage); and those between cranial bones, with no movement at all (synostosis, bound by fibrous
cartilage). Examples of the diarthroses are the joints of the limbs, with gliding movements between
carpal bones, hinge movements between the humerus and ulna, ball-and-socket movements of
the hip, pivot movements of the radius and ulna, ellipsoidal movements between the carpals and
the radius, and saddle movements between the carpal bone and the 1st metacarpal bone of the
thumbs.

ARTICULACIONES

Las articulaciones son las uniones (lugares de reunin llamado articulaciones) entre los huesos o
entre el cartlago y el hueso. Hay dos tipos principales de las articulaciones: (1) los (llamado
synarthroses) con poco o ningn movimiento y sin una cavidad, y (2) los (llamado
diarthroses) con diversos grados de libre circulacin y con una cavidad entre sus superficies
que contiene un fluido lubricante (lquido sinovial).
Ejemplos de los synarthroses son las juntas entre la tibia y el peron, con ligero movimiento
(sindesmosis, obligado por ligamentos de tejido conectivo fibroso); aquellos en las uniones
de los dos huesos de la cadera (la snfisis pbica), con ligero movimiento (sincondrosis,
unido por cartlago hialino), y entre los huesos del crneo, sin ningn movimiento en
absoluto (sinostosis, obligado por cartlago fibroso). Ejemplos de los diarthroses son las
articulaciones de las extremidades, con los movimientos de deslizamiento entre los huesos
del carpo, los movimientos de articulacin entre el hmero y el cbito, los movimientos de
bola y cavidad de la cadera, los movimientos de pivote del radio y el cbito, los
movimientos elipsoidales entre los huesos del carpo y la radio, y la silla movimientos entre
los huesos del carpo y el primero del hueso metacarpiano del pulgar.
