Ancient Aliens (Aliengenas ancestrales en Hispanoamrica, Generacin alien en Espaa) es una

polmica serie de televisin estadounidense que se estren el 20 de abril de 2010, en el canal History.1
Producido por Prometheus Entertainment, el programa presenta la hiptesis de los antiguos astronautas
y propone que los textos histricos, la arqueologa, las enseanzas espirituales y diversas leyendas
contienen pruebas de que en el pasado el ser humano tuvo contacto con civilizaciones extraterrestres,2
3 mediante argumentos y explicaciones extradas de documentos antiguos, creencias religiosas y
acontecimientos histricos bblicos. Correlativamente, la serie ha sido duramente criticada por
cientficos e historiadores, tachndola de un panfleto de teoras de pseudociencia y pseudohistoria. En
2012, un documental de 3 horas (Ancient Alien Debunked) se present como refutacin punto por
punto de las hiptesis planteadas en la serie.4
El especial que dio origen a la serie sali al aire el 8 de marzo de 2009. La primera temporada consta de
5 episodios, con una duracin de 90 minutos cada uno. La segunda temporada de la serie, que consta de

10 episodios con una duracin de 45 minutos cada uno, comenz a emitirse el 28 de octubre de 2010. A
finales de 2012 se estren para Latinoamrica la tercera temporada, la cual consta de 16 captulos,
examinando 75 millones aos, desde la edad de los dinosaurios, pasando por el antiguo Egipto, hasta el
cielo sobre el desierto estadounidense en la actualidad. La cuarta y quinta temporada se estrenaron, en
USA, el 17 de diciembre y 21 de diciembre de 2012, respectivamente.5

En el episodio piloto, escrito y dirigido por el productor ejecutivo Kevin Burns, aparecen como
personalidades destacadas las siguientes: Giorgio A. Tsoukalos, consultor de produccin; Erich von
Dniken; el uflogo C. Scott Littleton, como consultor experto de la serie hasta su muerte en 2010; y el
locutor de radio George Noory, quien aparecer en cinco episodios ms. Exceptuando en este episodio
piloto, el autor de Historia Alternativa David Hatcher Childress aparece con frecuencia en la mayora
de los episodios.

Recepcin televisiva
El programa tena 1,676 millones de espectadores a finales de octubre de 2010,6 2,034 millones a
mediados de diciembre (para el episodio "Estructuras inexplicables"),7 y a finales de enero de 2011
tena 1,309 millones de espectadores.8 9

Crtica cientfica
La serie ha recibido numerosas crticas de medios, cientficos e historiadores nacionales e
internacionales. Ha sido calificada como "un show de teoras descabelladas"10 y "altamente
especulativa".11 La prctica totalidad de las hiptesis expuestas en la serie no son compartidas por la
comunidad cientfica internacional.12

Ancient Aliens Debunked

Ancient Aliens Debunked13 es un documental de 3 horas de duracin producido en 2012 por Chris
White con la asistencia de Michael S. Heiser, experto en textos bblicos, clsicos y sumerios. Su
objetivo es refutar y ofrecer explicaciones cientficas a los temas mostrados en Ancient Aliens. Entre los
temas tratados en el documental figuran el origen de Puma Punku, la construccin de la Gran Pirmide,
las lneas de Nazca, la verdad detrs de los supuestos OVNIS representados en el arte religioso
medieval y del Renacimiento, y una crtica a las teoras pseudocientficas de Zecharia Sitchin.

La historia est plagada de relatos de encuentros con seres extraos o avistamientos de objetos
misteriosos en el cielo. La obra del siglo XIII, Otia Imperialia, incluye el relato de un ser que
desciende de una nave volante en Bristol (Inglaterra). El diario de a bordo del primer viaje a Amrica
de Cristbal Coln contiene informacin sobre unas luces extraas que observaron en los cielos.
Existen piezas de arte medieval que estn decoradas con dibujos de objetos con forma de disco que
flotan en el cielo. Durante la peste negra se registraron avistamientos de objetos volantes con forma de
cigarro. Incluso, entre los padres fundadores de los Estados Unidos, surgi el debate sobre la vida
extraterrestre. Estos avistamientos, procedentes de cualquier parte del mundo desde los tiempos

Ancient Aliens is an American television series that premiered on April 20, 2010 on the History
channel.[1] Produced by Prometheus Entertainment, the program presents hypotheses of ancient
astronauts and proposes that historical texts, archaeology and legends contain evidence of past humanextraterrestrial contact.[2][3] The show has been criticized for presenting pseudoscience and
pseudohistory.
Original run

The series' de facto pilot was a TV special of the same name that aired on March 8, 2009, on the
History channel. Seasons 13 aired on the same channel until 2011. Beginning in 2012 with season 4,
the series began airing on H2. Season 7 began on H2 in October 2014.

Production
The executive producer of Ancient Aliens is Kevin Burns, who also directed and wrote the pilot
episode. Giorgio A. Tsoukalos serves as consulting producer and appeared on screen in the pilot.[4]
Erich von Dniken appeared in the pilot episode, and UFO researcher C. Scott Littleton served as an
expert consultant for the show until his death in 2010.[5]
Radio talk show host George Noory speaks in five episodes, including the pilot. Reverend Barry
Downing, known for describing angels in the Bible as ancient astronauts, offered his viewpoints in the
pilot episode. Psychologist Jonathan Young, who brings a mythological perspective, appears on screen
in every episode but the first pilot. Alternative History author David Hatcher Childress, speaks
frequently in most episodes.

Reception
The program had 1.676 million viewers in late October 2010,[6] 2.034 million viewers in midDecember (for the "Unexplained Structures" episode)[7] and in late January 2011 it had 1.309 million
viewers.[8][9]
Some reviewers have characterized the show as "far-fetched",[10] "hugely speculative",[11] and
"...expound[ing] wildly on theories suggesting that astronauts wandered the Earth freely in ancient
times."[12] Many of the ideas presented in the show are not accepted by the scientific community, and
have been criticized as pseudoscience and pseudohistory.[13] History professor Ronald H. Fritze
observed that pseudoscience as offered by von Dniken and the Ancient Aliens program has a periodic
popularity in the US: "In a pop culture with a short memory and a voracious appetite, aliens and
pyramids and lost civilizations are recycled like fashions."[13][14]
Forbes.com contributor Brad Lockwood criticized Ancient Aliens as an example of the History
Channel's addition of "programs devoted to monsters, aliens and conspiracies", commenting that,
"Ancient Aliens defies all ability to suspend disbelief for the sake of entertainment."[15] Forbes.com
staff writer Alex Knapp also criticized the series and cited archaeologist Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews'
rebuke of the History Channel for "treating (Ancient Aliens) nonsense as though it were fact."[16]
Smithsonian.com science writer Brian Switek was extremely critical of the series, particularly an
episode that suggested "aliens exterminated dinosaurs to make way for our species". He characterized
the show as "some of the most noxious sludge in televisions bottomless chum bucket."[17][18]
Others have called attention to a paucity of opposing viewpoints. Kenneth Feder, Professor of
Archaeology at Central Connecticut State University and author of Frauds, Myths, and Mysteries:
Science and Pseudoscience in Archaeology,[19] has said that he was approached by Ancient Aliens
producers regarding his potential participation. "My response was, Id be happy to be on your show, but
you should know that I think that the ancient astronaut hypothesis is execrable bullshit," he said, in an
interview. "I havent heard back from them, rather remarkably. So, I guess maybe theyre not interested
in the other point of view."[20]

In popular culture
South Park parodied the show in an episode entitled "A History Channel Thanksgiving" (November 11,
2011, episode 15.13). Reviewer Ramsey Isler commented, "The aim is placed squarely on Ancient
Aliens specifically," and described the animation as "a perfect satire of all the ridiculousness of this
series, including the black and white art with aliens photoshopped in, and interviews with people of
dubious authority."[21]
In a June 2011 Rolling Stone interview, singer Katy Perry commented that she had become "obsessed"
with the show, saying, "When it talks about the sky people, how everyone comes from the sky and how
the Pyramids were used for star observations, it's too much for me. It all seems to connect the dots. It's
blowing my mind."[22]
In a March 2012 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, actress Megan Fox remarked that she
"loved" Ancient Aliens. Ellen agreed the show and its theories were "thought-provoking."[23]
