La Primera Guerra Carlista y los ilustradores militares británicos.

La implantación del sistema liberal en Europa fue un largo proceso en el que cada
país llevó su ritmo y su propia evolución. Cuando en España estalla la Primera
Guerra carlista, guerra civil entre absolutistas y liberales que caracterizó la
resistencia al cambio, Gran Bretaña ya lo tenía consolidado y optó por apoyar la
revolución liberal en la península con el envío de la Marina Real y tropas
voluntarias.

En este contexto, varios militares británicos, dejaron testimonio de sus

experiencias en forma de acuarelas y litografías, ilustrando tanto sus experiencias
bélicas como los paisajes y la vida cotidiana.

Esta exposición presenta un cuaderno de acuarelas inédito y varios álbumes de

litografías de voluntarios liberales británicos así como, por vez primera, las
acuarelas del voluntario carlista Charles Henningsen.

Estas ilustraciones pertenecen a las colecciones de la Diputación Foral de

Gipuzkoa.

Los Hornbrook. El cuaderno de acuarelas y los grabados

Richards y Thomas HORNBROOK fueron militares británicos que durante la

Primera Guerra Carlista realizaron una serie de dibujos, acuarelas y
estampas ilustrando su experiencia en el País Vasco.

Richards, el padre, capitán de la Marina Británica, elaboró durante su

estancia un cuaderno de acuarelas con imágenes de paisajes y vida
cotidiana. Thomas, el hijo, fue miembro de la Legión Auxiliar Británica, pintó
algunas acuarelas, y editó en Londres la colección de litografías titulada:
Twelve Views in the Basque Provinces illustrating several of the actions in
wich the British Legion was engaged with Carlist Troops.

Participación británica en la guerra carlista.

La armada británica controlaba la costa cantábrica para impedir el desembarco

de armas por los carlistas desde abril de 1834, como consecuencia de la
Cuádruple Alianza, tratado firmado por el gobierno liberal español y las
potencias liberales europeas, Gran Bretaña, Francia y Portugal.Tras los éxitos
militares de Zumalacárregui, el gobierno de Madrid solicitó una mayor
implicación de sus aliados en la guerra. Para ello, los británicos, decidieron en
junio de 1835 formar un cuerpo militar de voluntarios: la Legión Auxiliar.

El primer batallón llegó a San Sebastián en julio del mismo año y para mediados
de agosto ya se encontraba en la ciudad con unos 10.000 hombres.

Al frente de ellos fue nombrado el militar experimentado Sir George de Lacy

Evans. Como respuesta a esta participación británica en la guerra, Don Carlos
firmó el decreto de Durango, por el que todos los extranjeros que luchaban con
los liberales quedaban fuera del Tratado Elliot, es decir, serían pasados por las
armas.

La Legión Auxiliar Británica en acción.
Una cuarta parte de los 10.000 hombres de la Legión Británica perdieron la vida en esta
guerra. Pero la mitad de estas 2.500 víctimas no murió en los enfrentamientos armados
sino que perecieron a causa de las enfermedades.
La Legión se trasladó a Vitoria en diciembre de 1835. Sufrieron un invierno muy duro en
esta ciudad. Para marzo murieron más de 800 hombres, la mayoría enfermos. Mientras
tanto detuvieron al panadero que trabajaba para los carlistas y fue condenado a garrote
vil por envenenar el pan de los británicos.
La Legión volvió a San Sebastián en mayo, participando en un enfrentamiento contra
los carlistas que sitiaban la ciudad nada más llegar. A los pocos días conquistaron el
puerto de Pasajes.
En marzo de 1837 sufrieron la mayor derrota de esta guerra en Oriamendi, de manos
del Infante Don Sebastian. Sin embargo, en mayo, aprovechando la Expedición Real,
conquistaron las poblaciones situadas entre San Sebastián y el Bidasoa. La mayor
resistencia la encontraron en Irun, población que saquearon tras su conquista.
Los miembros de la Legión Británica habían firmado cumplir dos años de servicio, tras
los cuales en su mayoría, hasta el propio Lacy Evans, decidieron abandonarlo en julio
de 1837, ya que siempre estuvieron mal aprovisionados y se les pagaba muy tarde.
No obstante 1.700 de entre ellos decidieron quedarse bajo las órdenes del coronel O
´Conell, formando la llamada Nueva Legión.
En septiembre más de 100 británicos perdieron la vida en Andoain frente a los carlistas
dirigidos por Uranga, lo que llevó a la Nueva Legión a su práctica desaparición. En
diciembre O´Conell decidió la disolución de la Nueva Legión, responsabilizando al
gobierno de su decisión, ya que no les llegaban a tiempo ni las provisiones ni los
sueldos.

El fuerte Lord John Hay

Construido en el monte Jaizkibel por los zapadores de la Marina Real Británica el

verano de 1836, su objetivo era defender Pasajes de los ataques por tierra. Recibió
el nombre del comodoro Lord John Hay, responsable de la Marina Británica en la
costa vasca, que fue quien lo mandó construir.

Albergó a 160 hombres de la Marina Británica. Tanto los Hornbrook como Wilkinson
lo incluyeron en sus ilustraciones.

Hoy en día el fuerte es visitable.

El cementerio de los ingleses
“CEMENTERIO de los OFICIALES BRITÁNICOS al pie del CASTILLO de SAN
SEBASTIAN.
Subiendo desde la ciudad al Castillo de San Sebastián, al pasar junto a un faro provisional,
y rodeando bruscamente un ángulo del promontorio rocoso, en torno al que sube
zigzagueando un camino por la empinada pendiente, nos vemos de pronto sorprendidos
por la grandiosidad agreste y fiera del panorama. Un gran número de gigantescos
fragmentos de piedra yacen diseminados por la ladera del monte, entre una densa y fértil
vegetación; y en las alturas, colgada como nido de águilas en la cima de un macizo
acantilado, la fuerte ciudadela de San Sebastián, imponiendo respeto.
En medio de este impresionante paisaje, que parece haber nacido de una terrible
convulsión de la naturaleza, en un rincón pequeño y resguardado, ahora tierra sagrada,
justamente bajo el escarpado y pendiente acantilado sobre el que se asienta el Castillo,
pueden verse numerosos montículos de césped, que marcan los lugares donde reposan los
restos de muchos valientes oficiales de la Legión Británica. Se han erigido unas pocas y
sencillas cruces de madera con las iniciales de los que cayeron; (...)
La tumba cuadrada que aparece en primer plano fue levantado en memoria de la señora
Callender, llorada esposa del Inspector General de Hospitales. Los sepulcros que están
inmediatamente detrás son los de dos valientes primos, el coronel Tupper y el coronel
Oliver De Lancey.”
Henry WILKINSON

En 1924, el ayuntamiento de San Sebastián decidió rehabilitar el cementerio. El 28 de

septiembre fue inaugurado con la presencia de las reinas Maria Cristina y Victoria Eugenia,
junto al embajador de Gran Bretaña y numerosas autoridades civiles y militares.

Las leyendas grabadas en piedra que presidían el monumento y que aun se pueden leer
son:
«A la memoria de los valientes soldados británicos que dieron la vida por la grandeza de su
país y por la independencia y la libertad de España» e «Inglaterra nos confía sus gloriosos
restos. Nuestra gratitud velará su eterno reposo». 57
Henry WILKINSON

Apenas tenemos datos sobre la biografía de Henry Wilkinson, médico de la Legión

Británica. Se alistó en junio de 1835 como cirujano en el 5º regimiento, para luego
ser destinado al de los Granaderos escoceses y, desde marzo de 1837, al Estado
Mayor de la Legión Auxiliar Británica.

Resultado de esta estancia fue la obra Sketches of Scenery in the Basque

Provinces of Spain, publicada en Londres en 1838. Se trata de una interesante
narración de su experiencia por tierras vascas, acompañada de vistas de localidades
e ilustraciones musicales con partituras de aires vascos y temas oídos entre las
tropas españolas.

Si poco podemos decir de este autor, menos aún sabemos sobre el mayor Charles
Van Zeller, el coronel Ramsay, Sydney Crocker y Bligh Barker, autores del resto de
las ilustraciones. Sólo sabemos que fueron militares británicos que lucharon en la
Primera Guerra Carlista.
