More conservative temperature guidance does not reflect a change in
product performance
Recomendaciones deben ser probadas contra el rgimen de
lubricacin EHL
2006 Exxon Mobil Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
(FAG FE 9 High Speed Angular Contact Ball
Bearing (DIN 51821))
Purpose
Measure the friction properties of grease.
Description
5 ball bearings are packed with 2 cc of
grease
Ball bearings are placed in angular
contact at high temperature (120- 200C),
speed (3000 or 6000 rpm), and load (1500,
3000, or 4500 N axial)
Test is ended when the drive power
required to turn the bearing increases to
twice its original value because of starved
lubrication
Then possible to determine the frictional
moment of the test bearing from the
increase in motor output
Results
The time at which the bearings have a
failure probability of 10% and 50%
(denoted L10 and L50) are calculated from
the data
2006 Exxon Mobil Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
204 K Ball Bearing
(POPE Test (ASTM D 3336))
Purpose
Evaluate grease evaporation and
oxidation resistance in a lightly loaded,
high speed, heated ball bearing. Test is
named for the builder of the high speed
spindle, Pope Spindle Co.
Description
204 K ball bearing is packed with 3.2 cc of
grease
Rotated at 10,000 rpm under light load
while heated to 150C, 177C, or other test
temperature
Test cycle is twenty hours of running and
four hours at rest
When electrical current to operate the
spindle motor increases by 300% of the
value of the newly packed bearing, testing
is stopped
Results
The number of running hours is the test
result
2006 Exxon Mobil Corporation. All Rights Reserved.
Influencias del criterio de seleccin en el
desempeo a altas temperaturas
goteo

(Como se determina el desempeo a bajas
temperaturas?)
There are a number of aspects of low temperature performance
that may be considered in determination of low temperature
limits for a given application
Low temperature bearing torque
industrial ball bearing criteria generally based on ASTM
D1478 (or similar) tests
industry automotive roller bearing by ASTM D 4693
Dispensing equipment limitations related to slumping behavior,
pressure drop in delivery lines, or metering device
considerations
ASTM D 1092 / USS Mobility and Lincoln Ventmeter tests
commonly used to develop system-specific guidance
OEM guidelines for larger bearings based on EHL / lubricity may
be even more conservative (based on bearing wear tests)

(Low Temperature Torque of Ball Bearings
(ASTM D 1478))
Purpose
Evaluate the extent to which a grease retards

Description

Bearing is rotated at 1 rpm to measure the
starting and running torque, indications of

Apparent Viscosity (ASTM D 1092)
Purpose
Determine the apparent viscosity of a grease.
Apparent viscosity versus shear rate
information can be useful in predicting pressure
drops in grease distribution systems
Description
Sample of grease is forced through a series of 8
capillary tubes by a floating piston actuated by
the hydraulic system
Pressure in the hydraulic system is measured
Equipment designed so determinations can be
made at any temperature between -54C and
28C
Results
Results (in Poises) are shown graphically

The pressure data is plotted to show the apparent viscosity as Poise vs shear rate
The shear rate is the force delivered by the combination of piston speeds and capillaries which are sixteen
different shear rates.
This data can also be plotted to give pressure drop, pump size and other grease handling details when the

Low Temperature Torque of Wheel Bearings
(ASTM D 4693)
Purpose
Measure a lubricating greases effect
on tapered roller bearing rotation
resistance when subjected to low
temperatures
Description
Two tapered roller bearings are packed
with grease and then cooled to the test
temperature
Bearings are rotated at 1 rpm to
measure the starting and running
torque
Starting and running torques are
indications of the greases consistency
at test temperature
Test correlates with the performance of
greases in automotive wheel
bearings in low temperature service
Results
Report starting and running torques in
N m

Lincoln Ventmeter (Lincoln Method)
Purpose
Evaluate the performance of lubricating
greases in a centralized lubrication
system
Description
Measures the degree to which grease
will flow due to residual pressure and
temperature
Apparatus charged with test grease by
way of a hydraulic grease fitting
All air is expelled in the charging
process and additional lubricant is
pumped in to develop a pressure of 1800
psi
The test is typically conducted at 25C
(77F), 0C (32F) and -18C (0F)
Results
Vent pressure is recorded when Valve 1
is opened for 30 seconds

ExxonMobil testing using standard D6138 method with 3% NaCl yielded 3,2 results
The stay-in-place ability combined with mobility and high-pressure performance
Castrol PDS claims 12 g/min USS Mobility. Our laboratory data shows .98g/min, which is
expected for a grease having 28% thickener.
