«geotérmico» viene
del Idioma griego:
geo («Tierra»), y
thermos («calor»);
literalmente «calor de
la Tierra».

¿ Como se obtiene la energia
geotermica?

La energía geotérmica se obtiene mediante

el aprovechamiento del calor interno de la
tierra para calentar agua y que se convierta
en vapor (en otras ocasiones se aprovechan
aguas subterráneas con alta temperatura y
utilizan el vapor que desprenden). Este
vapor se utiliza para hacer girar una turbina
que acciona un generador eléctrico que
transforma la energía cinética en energía
eléctrica. Esta energía es distribuida
mediante el Sistema de Interconectado
Nacional. 3

Características que debe tener el terreno

Para poder instalar una central geotérmica hace falta

una zona en donde la temperatura de la tierra sea muy
elevada, de entre 100
° ° a 150 ° C, casi siempre es en
zonas montañosas por la gran actividad volcánica que
hay. En Argentina existen mas de 300 puntos de interés
geotérmico, pero solo 4 tienen potencial para la
generación de electricidad debido a la alta temperatura
del subsuelo. Estos puntos se encuentran en las
provincias de Neuquén, San Juan, Salta y Mendoza
(todas estas provincias tienen parte da la cordillera de
los Andes).

 Costos de inversión

El costo inicial oscila entre 20 y 30 millones de

dólares. La inversión es costosa debido a previa
exploración que hay que hacer en el terreno, a todos
los riesgos que se corren y a la perforación de 3 a 5
pozos de entre 4 a 6 km. de profundidad (porque la
temperatura del subsuelo se mantiene en 15 °C desde
los 5 a los 10 metros de profundidad y, a partir de ahí
aumenta 3 °C cada 100 metros). El elevado costo vale
la pena, ya que no necesita de mucho mantenimiento
y tiene considerables ventajas.

 Beneficios
Es una de las pocas fuentes de energía renovables capaz de producir
electricidad de manera constante las 24hs del día.
En condiciones adecuadas, puede tener un costo competitivo en
relación con el carbón o el gas natural, lo que significa que los
países pueden pasar a depender menos de los combustibles
importados y ampliar su seguridad energética.
Por tratarse de una fuente de electricidad más limpia, la energía
geotérmica también puede tener un papel importante en la
disminución de las emisiones de carbono del sector energético al no
haber proceso de combustión.
Puede generar electricidad con un menor impacto ambiental y a un
menor costo que el requerido por los combustibles fósiles como el
petróleo y el carbón. Y por ser una fuente renovable, ayuda a mejorar

la seguridad del suministro eléctrico.
Necesita electricidad para su funcionamiento, pero es muy eficiente. Un ejemplo: para
generar 100 kWh de energía térmica, solo necesita 25 kWh de electricidad. Por eso sólo
consume ¼ de la energía que produce.
Su mantenimiento es barato, ya que los tubos no sufre ningún desgaste por la erosión
porque se encuentran bajo tierra, por lo que la inversión vale la pena.
Es una energía que se produce en propio lugar, de forma que no se compra ni se vende
como pasa con el petróleo o el gas. Esto reduce la dependencia energética que tienen los
países sin yacimientos derivados del petróleo y, además, no se ve influenciada por las
fluctuaciones en los precios.
El rendimiento no varía, ya que la temperatura del interior de la tierra es constante.
La amortización de la instalación se hace en pocos años porque la inversión se recupera
rápidamente por el mayor rendimiento.
Como su capacidad no depende de la fluctuación de elementos meteorológicos, como el
viento o el sol, se puede calcular la capacidad de producción de una planta de energía
geotérmica. Esto la hace una fuente de energía muy predecible, lo que le otorga una ventaja
frente a otras renovables.
