Marshall stability test
 The Marshall method of paving mix design was
formulated by Bruce Marshall, an asphalt engineer
with the Mississippi Department of Highways. The
United States Corps of Engineers, through extensive
research and correlation studies, improved and added
certain aspects to the Marshall test procedure, while
also developing mix design criteria.
MARSHALL TEAM PARTS

o Ring Load, 50 kN.

o Digital Pressure Gauge with Stand, 25 x 0.01 mm.
o Hand Wheel for Manual Control.
o 4” head.
o Dimensions: 550x700x1200mm.
o Weight (approx.): 103 kg.
o Power: 1100W

 The Modified Marshall was
 It is original only, applicable
developed for maximum sizes
to hot mix asphalt for paving, above 38mm (1.5”), and is
containing aggregates with a intended for laboratory design and
maximum size of 25 mm (1”) field control of dense graded, hot
or less. mix asphalt.
IMPORTANCE

 Marshall method is to define

density-void analysis, and
stability and flow test of
compacted specimens; It is
worth mentioning that this
design process does not
have specified tests for
mineral aggregates or for
asphalt cements.
