Se considera que existen ciertos accidentes “aleatorios” que provocan la falla.

Estos accidentes aleatorios pueden ser debidos a fuerzas externas como una repentina ráfaga de viento
o un aumento de voltaje o por causas internas tales como una desintegración química o un mal
funcionamiento mecánico.
La distribución exponencial describiría de una manera correcta dicha distribución de fallas al aplicar su
único parámetro α.
Se considera también que en la ley exponencial de fallas la tasa de fallas es constante.

Ejemplo de una falla exponencial

Se observa un molino de viento que produce

una cantidad conocida de trabajo, su
mecanismo presenta fallas aleatorias solo
cuando ráfagas de viento exceden la velocidad
máxima de giro en el eje del molino.
Se puede describir la probabilidad de fallas
mediante una función exponencial con media
igual a 23 días “α”.

Ley normal de fallas

Considera que la mayoría de las fallas ocurren en torno a la media

Toma en cuenta la desviación estándar y la media de una población, asume que la probabilidad de falla
disminuye simétricamente cuando (T-μ) aumenta.

La ley normal de fallas significa que alrededor del 95.45% de las fallas tienen lugar para los valores de t
que satisfacen |T-μ|<2σ.
