INDEFINITE PRONOUNS

We use indefinite pronouns to refer to people or things without

saying exactly who or what they are. (Usamos pronombres indefinidos para referirnos
a personas o cosas sin decir exactamente quiénes o qué son.)

We use pronouns ending in -body or -one for people, and pronouns
ending in -thing for things: (usamos los pronombres que terminan en -BODY o -ONE para las
personas , y los pronombres que terminan en -THING de cosas )
Everybody enjoyed the concert. Todos disfrutaron el concierto.
I opened the door but there was no one at home. Abrí la puerta pero no había nadie en casa.
It was a very clear day. We could see everything. Fue un día muy claro. Pudimos ver todo
 We use a singular verb after an indefinite pronoun: (Usamos un verbo singular después de un pronombre indefinido)
◦ Everybody loves Sally. Todo el mundo ama a Sally
Everything was ready for the party. Todo estaba listo para la fiesta
When we refer back to an indefinite pronoun we normally use a plural pronoun: (Cuando nos referimos a un
pronombre indefinido normalmente usamos un pronombre plural )

◦ Everybody enjoyed the concert. They stood up and clapped. Todos disfrutaron el concierto. Se levantaron y
aplaudieron
We can add -'s to an indefinite pronoun to make a possessive. (Podemos añadir -'s a un pronombre indefinido para
hacer un posesivo)

◦ They were staying in somebody’s house. (Estaban en la casa de alguien) Ellos estaban en casa de alguien
"Everyone" es para un grupo presente o conocido por ejemplo lo diría un profesor:
"Stand up everyone". Pero si quisiera referirse a todo el mundo en general y no sólo a
aquellos que escuchan su discurso elegiría "everybody": "Everybody knows the truth,
the President lies".
We use indefinite pronouns with no- as the subject in negative clauses (not pronouns with
any.) (Usamos pronombres indefinidos con no, como el sujeto en cláusulas negativas)
Anybody didn’t come >> Nobody came. Nadie vino

We do not use another negative in a clause with nobody, no one or nothing: (No usamos otro
negativo en una cláusula con nobody, no one or nothing))
Nobody came. Nadie vino
Nothing happened. Nada pasó

We use else after indefinite pronouns to refer to people or things in addition to the ones we
already mentioned. (Usamos otra cosa después de los pronombres indefinidos para referirnos a personas o
cosas además de las que ya mencionamos)
All the family came, but no one else.
If Michael can’t come we’ll ask somebody else.
