Remote Machine Monitoring – PC to Multiple Devices over VPN
Application: The customer is a manufacturer (OEM) of machines that are shipped to many different end locations.
The OEM wants to be able to troubleshoot issues at the customer site without having to travel to the site and without requiring the
end-user to connect the machine(s) to a local network for internet access. This solution creates a secure IPSec VPN tunnel from the
technician’s PC at the OEM’s office to the equipment at the End-User’s facility.
Customer Benefit/Savings: Cost of time to travel to the site (up to $1000) plus up to $500 per day travel cost. Cost to end user due to
disruption of production could easily be $5,000+ per day. The reluctance of the end-user to grant network access for internet
connectivity is very high. This offers them a solution that works very well.
Data Usage: Difficult to predict, but assumed to be high if doing a lot of diagnostics, downloading new programs to the controller, etc.

Gas Pipeline – PC to Remote Ethernet Device
Application: The customer is a mid-stream Oil or Natural Gas company. They want to monitor remote a pipeline for pressure,
flow or similar information from their utility office. At the utility office they have a PC that wants to communicate with remote
Ethernet devices located along the pipeline.
Customer Benefit/Savings: The utility can monitor their remote sites without having to physically visit them. Other options for providing
remote monitoring include satellite modems, or frequency-hopping SCADA network. Satellite modems have very expensive monthly
usage charges on the order of $200/mo. A frequency hopping system may be impractical because of the cost of the large network that
would need to be deployed to cover the long distances.
Data Usage: Likely polling of the remote sites is infrequent. Assuming each remote site is polled once every 5 minutes and
2,000 bytes of data are transferred during each poll, an individual remote site would use 18MB/mo.

Application: The customer is a Water Utility. They want to monitor remote serial devices from their utility office. At the utility office they
may have a serial PLC that needs to communicate with the remote devices or they may want to communicate to them from a PC.
Customer Benefit/Savings: The utility can monitor their remote sites without having to drive to them. Other options for providing a similar
solution are leased-line dial-up modems or frequency-hopping SCADA network. The monthly cost of the leased-line is high and they are not
being supported any longer. Installation of cellular solution is simple and quick.
Data Usage: Likely polling of the remote sites is infrequent. Assuming each remote site is polled once every 5 minutes and
1,000 bytes of data are transferred during each poll, an individual remote site would use 9MB/mo.
