es autora de alrededor de 60 artículos de revista indizada, de alrededor de 60 artículos
en memorias de congreso, coautora de 3 libros. Sus intereses de investigación se
centran en matemáticas aplicadas: sistemas híbridos, control automático, aplicaciones
de control e inteligencia artificial en energía y vehículos. Ilse Cervantes coordina la Red
de Investigación en Innovación Automotriz del Instituto Politécnico Nacional. Ella es
investigadora Nivel II del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (México), editora en Jefe
de la revista IEEE Latin America Transactions, editora asociada de la revista IEEE

▶ Only papers having good original research contributions or very strong research
contributions shall be accepted.
▶ A paper must be well supported with experimental/numerical evidence and must be
technically and mathematically accurate.
▶ Papers having low writing/presentation quality shall be rejected.
Writing a paper

▶ Writing a paper is as important as any part of your research.

▶ Writing a paper that is successfully accepted in a scientific journal
requires substantial effort

Introduction
Ask yourself the following

▶ Is my research question clear?

▶ Does my Introduction act as a clear road map for understanding my paper?
▶ Is it sufficiently different from the Abstract, without any cut and pastes? (some overlap is fine)
▶ Have I mentioned only what my readers specifically need to know and what I will subsequently refer
to in the Discussion?
▶ Have I been as concise as possible?
▶ Have I used tenses correctly? present simple (general background context, description of what will be
done in the paper), present perfect (past to present solutions), past simple (my contribution, though
this may also be expressed using the present simple or future
State of Art
A Literature Review generally answers the following questions

▶ What are the seminal works on my topic? Do I need to mention these?

▶ What progress has been made since these seminal works? What are the most relevant recent works?
What is the best order to mention these works? What are the achievements and limitations of these
recent works?. What gap do these limitations reveal?
▶ How does my work intend to fill this gap?
▶ Have I mentioned only what my readers specifically need to know and what I will subsequently refer
to in the Discussion?
▶ Are the papers I have mentioned in a logical order? Is it clear why I have chosen these papers and not
others?
▶ Have I followed my journal’s instructions regarding how I make references to the literature?
To highlight your contribution

▶ write your own literature review, because after this analysis you will be very familiar with the
literature
▶ identify the differences in other researchers’ approaches and results compared to your research
▶ note down the strengths and weaknesses (including possibly bias) in the work of others

▶ Your aim is to find a knowledge gap to fill.

Materials and Methods

▶ A key skill is to make sure the descriptions are complete and yet are also as concise as possible
▶ What hypotheses was I testing?
▶ Where did I carry out this study and what characteristics did this location have?
▶ How did I design my experiment / sampling and what assumptions did I make?
▶ What variable was I measuring and why?
Materials and Methods

▶ What equipment did I use (plus modifications) and where did this equipment come from(vendor
source)?
▶ What protocol did I use for collecting my data?• How did I analyze the data? Statistical procedures?
Mathematical equations? Software?• What probability did I use to decide significance?
▶ What difficulties did I encounter?
▶ How does my methodology compare with previously reported methods, and what significant
advances does it make?
Results
Ask yourself the following questions

▶ What did I find?, What did I not find?, What did I find that I was not expecting to find? (e.g. that
contradicts my hypotheses)
▶ There are two typical ways to begin the Results.
▪ The first is to give a general panorama of your surveys: Overall, the results presented below show that …The
three key results of this empirical study are: …The following emergent themes were identified from the
analysis: …
▪ The most common way is to simply go directly to your results,
▶ Have I expressed myself as clearly as possible, so that the contribution that my results give stands out
for the referees and readers?
▶ Have I limited myself to only reporting the key result or trends that each figure and table conveys,
rather than reiterating each value?
▶ Have I chosen the best format to present my data (e.g. figure or table)?
Results
Ask yourself the following questions

▶ Have I ensured that my tables of results are comprehensive in the sense that they do not exclusively
include points that prove my point?
▶ Have I mentioned only what my readers specifically need to know and what I will subsequently refer
to in the Discussion?
▶ Have I mentioned clearly my contribution in many parts of my manuscript?
Discussions
The secret is to sound both convincing and credible at the same time.

▶ Do my data support what I set out to demonstrate at the beginning of the paper?
▶ How do my findings compare with what others have found? How consistent are they?
▶ What is my personal interpretation of my findings? What other possible interpretations are there?
What are the limitations of my study? What other factors could have influenced my findings?
▶ Have I reported everything that could make my findings invalid?
▶ Do any of the interpretations reveal a possible flaw (i.e. defect, error) in my experiment?
▶ Do my interpretations contribute some new understanding of the problem that I have investigated?
▶ Have I been as concise as possible?
Conclusions
These are not read at the end!!!

▶ A Conclusions section typically incorporates one or more of the following:

▶ A very brief revisit of the most important findings pointing out how these advance your field from the
present state of knowledge
▶ A final judgment on the importance and significance those findings in term of their implications and
impact, along with possible applications to other areas
▶ An indication of the limitations of your study
▶ Suggestions for improvements (perhaps in relation to the limitations)
▶ Recommendations for future work (either for the author, and/or the community)
