Bixby era dentista y tenía unos ingresos normales.

Mr. and Mrs. Bixby lived in a small apartment in New York. Mr. Bixby was a dentist
and had a normal income. Mrs. Bixby was a woman who liked to drink. Once a month,
and always on a Friday afternoon, Mrs. Bixby took a train to Baltimore to visit her
aunt. Mr. Bixby benevolently accepted this arrangement. Knowing that Aunt Maude
lived in Baltimore and that his wife was very fond of her.

The truth is that the old aunt was an alibi. Since Mrs. Bixby spent the night with
her lover who was a colonel, he was rich, he lived in a beautiful house, on the
outskirts of the city, he had no family. Year after year, the pleasant friendship
between Mrs. Bixby and the Colonel continued smoothly, and Mrs. Bixby's dentist
husband never suspected the truth.

Then, after a visit just before Christmas, Mrs. Bixby was standing in the Baltimore
station, waiting for the train that would take her back to New York, when suddenly
one of the Colonel's servants appeared and handed her a large carton box.

What the colonel had given him was the bison coat, in the box there was also a
farewell letter from the Colonel, who said that he knew how much he liked the bison
and asked him to accept it as a farewell gift. For his own personal reasons, he
would no longer be able to see her. On the back there was another note that said
just tell them your aunt gave it to you for Christmas. Aunt Maude couldn't give him
that because she had no money, in the excitement of trying it on she forgot that
important detail.

Mrs. Bixby thought to herself, "I think she did it on purpose just to annoy me. She
knew very well that she couldn't keep it. When she came back, she passed a
pawnshop, inside, she made up a story about losing her bag and all his money, and
he left the fur coat with the pawnbroker for fifty dollars in cash and a pawn
ticket that he insisted had no name or address on it.

She thought that when she got home she would tell her husband that she found that
ticket in the taxi and that she would file a claim the next day, it was an
ingenious plan except that the husband insisted on going to look for it before
going to work , which she ended up accepting, on the condition that he calls her as
soon as he picks up the article.

When he picks it up, he calls her and tells her that she was a lucky woman but what
would she tell him until she gets home, she decides to go to look for him at work
at noon, he wants to surprise her and tells her to close her eyes. When she opens
them, she finds that it was a leather scarf, which surprises her, thinking that the
lender had cheated her, she would go to claim the coat, leaving her husband's work
furiously, she sees the secretary with the coat on
