PRÓLOGO
L

a. A paragraph is like a building block. You may have seen children playing with
building blocks, carefully placing one on top of another. Although a single
paragraph may stand alone, it is usually a small part of a larger whole. You will
find two or more paragraphs in almost everything you read. Paragraphs are the
building blocks of writing.
b. Paragraphs have two special functions. First, paragraphs separate main ideas. When
you see a new paragraph, you know the writer has shifted from one main idea to
another. Second, paragraphs make reading easier. They help to interrupt the
constant flow of black type on the page by creating some white space for relief.
c. Paragraphs are indented. The first line of a paragraph may begin about five spaces
in from the left margin. The rest of the lines in the paragraph begin at the left
margin. Indenting signals a new paragraph. Paragraphs vary in length, but they are
long enough to develop the main idea. Rarely write one-sentence paragraphs.

All hope of love and kindness had been destroyed. Then, one day, as I
was looking through the bag I had picked up as I left your house, I
found a book and in it was your name and address and a description of
your experiment. I realized that I was the result of that experiment. As
you were my only hope, I decided to go and find you.
I avoided all villages and towns and traveled mostly by night. There
were many signs along the road, so it was not hard to find my way to
Geneva.
Once in Geneva, I reached a small field with a little river flowing through
it. There was a small boy playing in the spring sunshine. I wish I were
that child. I went up to him to ask if I could play too, but when he saw

Once upon a time there was a shoemaker and his wife. The shoemaker worked
hard, but he was very poor, and each day he became poorer and poorer. It
was not long before the shoemaker could only afford one piece of leather to
make one pair of shoes. That evening he cut out the pair of shoes on the
leather and left them on the bench to stitch the next morning. The shoemaker
and his wife were very sad for they knew that they would soon be penniless
Early the next morning, however, there on the bench was a pair of
shoes, already made and perfectly stitched! The shoemaker picked them up
and ran to show his wife who said: “who has made such a perfect pair of
shoes?!” But neither he nor his wife had any idea who had made them. The
very same day the shoemaker
sold the shoes to a lady; she was
so overjoyed with their quality
that she paid the shoemaker
twice the usual price. With this
money, the shoemaker was able
to buy enough leather for two
pairs of shoes, which he cut out
that night, all ready for him to
stitch the next morning.
95
Inglés III / Objetivo 14
The shoemaker soon became famous for his beautiful shoes, and his
wife grew to be very rich. Yet, they still had no idea who had made the shoes
for them. So, one evening, after the shoemaker had finished cutting the shoes,
he and his wife decided to stay up and see who it was who helped them.
They hid themselves in a corner of the workshop, behind the long curtain, lit
a candle and then waited quietly to see what would happen.
Just as the clock struck twelve, the door of the shop opened with a
creak, and in came two tiny elves. They were dressed in old, tatty clothes and
their feet were bare. They were unaware that they were being watched by the
shoemaker and his wife. The elves began making the shoes that were cut out.
They worked so hard and so quickly that they had soon finished. Then they
ran quickly away.
The next morning the shoemaker asked his wife: “How can we thank
these little elves for helping us to be so rich and happy?” “Why don’t we
make some clothes for them? Said his wife. “Their clothes are old, and they
haven’t any shoes.” the shoemaker and his wife both agreed that this was a
good idea and in the evenings that followed, they began to make the elves
some new clothes. The shoemaker chose the softest leather that he could find
to make the little shoes, whilst his wife made two little shirts, two green jackets
and two pairs of trousers to match. As a final thought, she also made two little
caps and knitted two pairs of white socks. It was Christmas Eve when the
clothes were finished: the shoemaker and his wife laid the cloth out on the
work bench, and then hid themselves, as they had done before, and waited
for the elves to come.
As usual, on the stroke of twelve, the door opened with a creak and in
ran the little elves, ready to begin their work. But there were no shoes to make,
for there were only the beautiful clothes laid out on the bench. The elves could
not believe their luck: they chatted and laughed as they quickly changed into
the new clothes. And before long they were ready. They joined hands and
danced around the room, finally dancing happily out of the door. The
shoemaker and his wife never saw the elves again, but they remained rich and
happy and never forgot those little cobblers who brought them such fortune.

Thousands of years ago, donkeys were not found in Guizhou province. But
meddlers were always allured by anything. So they shipped one into this area.
The donkey was enraged when the tiger got too close. So the donkey brought
his unique skill to bear on the offender —— to kick with his hooves. After
several bouts, it became very clear that what the donkey had was so much.
The tiger jumped upon the donkey in time and cut its throat.

All I Remember
When my father spoke to me, he always began the conversation with “Have I told
you yet today how much I adore you?” The expression of love was reciprocated
and, in his later years, as his life began to visibly ebb, we grew even closer... if that
was possible.
At 82 he was ready to die, and I was ready to let him go so that his suffering would
end. We laughed and cried and held hands and told each other of our love and
agreed that it was time. I said, “Dad, after you’ve gone I want a sign from you that
you’re fine.” He laughed at the absurdity of that; Dad didn’t believe in reincarnation.
I wasn’t positive I did either, but I had had many experiences that convinced me I
could get some signal “from the other side,”
My father and I were so deeply connected I felt his heart attack in my chest at the
moment he died. Later I mourned that the hospital, in their sterile wisdom, had not
let me hold his hand as he had slipped away.
Day after day I prayed to hear from him, but nothing happened. Night after night
I asked for a dream before I fell asleep. And yet four long months passed and I heard
and felt nothing but grief at his loss. Mother had died five years before of Alzheimer’s
and, though I had grown daughters of my own, I felt like a lost child.

One day, while I was lying on a massage table in a dark quite room waiting for my
appointment, a wave of longing for my father swept over me. I began to wonder if
I had been too demanding in asking for a sign from him. I noticed that my mind was
in a hyper-acute state. I experienced an unfamiliar clarity in which I could have
added long columns of figures in my head. I checked to make sure I was awake and
not dreaming, and I saw that I was as far removed from a dreamy state as one could
possibly be. Each thought I had, was like a drop of water disturbing a still pond, and
I marveled at the peacefulness of each passing moment. Then I thought, “I’ve been
trying to control messages from the other side; I will stop that now.”
I said, “Oh, Mother, I’m so sorry that you had to suffer with that horrible disease.”
She tipped her head slightly to one side, as though to acknowledge what I had
said about her suffering. Then she smiled - a beautiful smile - and said very distinctly,
“But all I remember is love.” And she disappeared.

DURANTE LA LECTURA
Long ago, there lived a young man, called Lisheng, who had just
married a beauty. The bride was very willful. One day, she had an idea
that a coat of fox fur would look pretty on her. So she asked her
husband to get her one. But the coat was rare and too expensive. The
helpless husband was forced to walk around on the hillside. Just at the
moment, a fox was walking by. He lost no time to catch it by the tail.
“Well, dear fox, let’s make an agreement. Could you offer me a sheet
of your skin? That isn’t a big deal, is it?”
The fox was shocked at the request, but she replied calmly, “Well, my
dear, that’s easy. But let my tail go so that I can pull off the skin for
you.” So the delighted man let her free and waited for the skin. But the
moment the fox got free, she ran away as quickly as she could into the
forest.

YOUR TURN!
Solo o en pareja, lee y analiza las siguientes historias. Escoge una de ellas y diseña
algunos ejercicios para que contesten tus compañeros. Puedes hacer ejercicios o
preguntas para antes, durante y después de la lectura.
In 206 B.C., Cao Cao (155-220), a great statesman, artist of war and
man of letters, led his army to attack the city of Huguan. As the city
was strategically located and very difficult to access, Cao’s army could
not take it in spite of great efforts. Cao got extremely outraged and
said, “Once I get into the city, I will have all those in it buried alive.”
Soon his words were spread throughout the city. As the defenders in
the city feared that it would really happen to them, they waged a
desperate resistance. As a result, Cao’s army found it even harder to
win the battle. They made months of attempts to get in but in vain.
Cao became more uneasy and consulted with his generals for a scheme.
At a meeting, General Cao Ren rose from his seat and said, “The art of
war tells us that we should not put the enemy in too tight a ring, that
the enemy should be left a way to survive. But now we have been
trapping our enemy in a deadly corner. What’s more, you have de-
clared to have them all buried alive. This will only make them battle
desperately against us, for they would rather fight to death than be
buried alive. As I estimate, the enemy has almost run out of supplies. If
we now give them a ray of hope by leaving an open in the ring, they
are very likely to surrender to us, for they would rather survive than
fight to death for nothing.”
122
Inglés III / Objetivo 14
Cao Cao thought the idea quite sensible and ordered to do as the
general said. As had been expected, the defending troops in the city
soon crossed over to Cao’s side. The city was finally seized without a
cruel fight.
