Most verbs in the present subjunctive are conjugated in the same way, including verbs
that have stem changes in the present. Almost all stem-changing verbs in the present
indicative have the same changes in the present subjunctive (see Chapter 3 to review
stem-changing verbs).
To form the present subjunctive in the three conjugations of regular verbs, take the
yo form of the present indicative, drop the -o ending, and add the endings of the
present subjunctive as follows:
The following lists give you verbs that frequently precede sentences with the subjunctive.
◆ Verbs to express advice and suggestions
desear to wish
esperar to hope, expect
querer to want, expect
The interjection ojala expresses hope, desire, wish; therefore, the subjunctive mood follows
this interjection, which is used very frequently in daily communication.
ojala (que) I wish that, I hope that, God willing
!Ojala ganes! I hope that you win!
Ojala que no nieve esta noche. I hope it doesn’t snow tonight.

justo fair
Tomorrow is the first day of my new job. I hope that everything go well for me. My boss seems very
friendly, but I prefer that she be more fair than friendly. I want her to understand that if I make a
mistake (and I’m sure that I’ll make many), I want her to tell (it to) me directly. Before the first week
ends, I’m going to request that she tell me what she thinks of my performance. If she suggests that
I change some aspect of my work, it will be easier to do so then than after working there for
a few months.
