De nuevo, cada familia es un mundo, pero me parece

importantísimo darte las nociones básicas de vocabulario para
que tu puedes adaptarlo a vuestro estilo.

VOCABULARIO
Comenzamos con una serie de palabras que sin duda van
a ayudarte a quitarte ese miedo que todos tenemos
cuando empezamos a hablar inglés en casa
Tooth: Diente
Teeth: Dientes.
Canine: Colmillo.
Incisors: Incisivos.
Premolars: Premolares.
Molars: Molar / muela.
Wisdom tooth: Muela del juicio.
Upper teeth: Dientes de arriba.

Lower teeth: Dientes de abajo.
Gums: Encías.
Tongue: Lengua.
Palate: Paladar.
Uvula: Campanilla.
Lip: Labio.
Milk tooth: Diente de leche.
Braces: Brackets / aparato de los dientes.

Tooth decay: Caries.
Tooth filling: Empaste.
False teeth: Dentadura postiza.
Tooth paste: Pasta de dientes.
Tooth brush: Cepillo de dientes.
Floss: Hilo dental.
Tooth fairy: Hada de los dientes.

CONVERSACIÓN
Ejemplo de una conversación real con mi hija. Para que
pongas en práctica todo lo aprendido.
–You are getting very big now. For that reason, I think it’s time
for you to start learning to brush your teeth properly.
–I already brush my teeth.
–You are right, you are trying to do it. But are you really brushing
your teeth or biting the toothbrush?
–Biting it.
–It’s ok, there is nothing wrong with that. We all bite the
toothbrush when we start brushing our teeth by ourselves.
Would you like to know why?
–Why mummy?
–Because we don’t know how to do it! Do you know how to
brush them correctly?
–Mmm I’m not sure.
–Then, let me teach you how to do it.
–I’ll put the toothpaste.
–That’s fine. It’s great that you know the first step.
–Can you reach the toothpaste for me, please?

–Sure. Here you are. How much paste do you need?
–Tiny little bit.
–Teeny weeny.
–You said teeny weeny.
–Yes, I did, because we need very little paste. A pea size!
–It’s not a pea, it’s toothpaste!
–I know I know, I mean, we need to get a drop of toothpaste as
small as a pea.
–Ahhhhh, ok. Done.
–Perfect. Now time to brush. The mouth is divided in two
sections ok? Top and bottom. Or how adults call them, upper
and lower teeth. We will start with the top ones. Ready?
–Ready.
–Brilliant. Let’s start. Place the toothbrush on top of your upper
front teeth. In little circles, move along the front teeth, one at a
time.
–Like this?
–Like that, but with smaller circles. If you prefer, you can also
use small strokes, back and forth. That’s it. Now, move to one
side. Still keep the toothbrush on the top. Those teeth are the
premolars and the molars. When eating and chewing those are
the teeth that chew all the food so you can swallow it after.

–They get dirty.
–Very dirty, that’s why we need to be careful and clean them
really well.
–Yes mummy.
–You are doing really well love. Should we move to the other
side of your mouth? You need to continue doing exactly the
same.
–Like this?
–Exactly like that! You are doing amazing. Once we finish with
that side of the mouth, we will do the same with our lower
teeth. Do you think you can do it all by yourself?
–Yes, look!
–I can see! That’s it! Small circles. Superb.
–Finished!
–Not quite. You’ve brushed the front part of your teeth, but…
what happens with the back?
–Ohh, we need to clean that?
–Yes, all the different parts of your mouth.
–How do I clean the back? I can’t reach.
–Yes, you can, let me show you. The back of your teeth is called
the inner side, and it’s quite tricky to brush. You will need to
place the toothbrush on top of the inner side, and with an up
and down motion, brush them carefully.

–Like this?
–Almost, let me show you again, it’s quite tricky. Can you see?
Up and down, up and down? That’s it!! You got it!
–I did it!
–Yes, you did! Now repeat with all your teeth, just like that!
–Done!
–Wait, two more thing to go.
–What else? My teeth are clean now.
–Unfortunately, you’ve not cleaned the chewing part.
–What?
–The part of your teeth that you use to chew. You’ve brushed
the outer surface and the inner surface, but not the top, not yet.
–Ahh, how do you do that?
–With small strokes. Just place the toothbrush on top of your
molars and stroke, back and forth, back and forth. That’s it, now
the other side of your mouth.
–Done.
–Great, is that all?
–Wait mummy, my tongue!
–Well remembered, tongue time! What a fantastic job! You
must be very proud!
–Thank you mummy.

TIP
Consejos para los dientes.
Para nosotros, la mejor experiencia a la hora de lavarse los
dientes ha sido el dejarles experimentar.
Desde que tenían unos meses y les salió el primer diente,
SIEMPRE antes de irnos a dormir les hemos ofrecido un cepillo
de dientes.
Y si, seamos realistas, no ha sido hasta muchiiiisiiimos meses
después que hemos empezado a lavárselos correctamente.
Pero ese tiempo de morder, conocer, chupar, experimentar
con el cepillo ha sido lo que les ha ayudado a entender que
forma parte de nuestra rutina y hay que hacerlo.
Ahora no se plantean no hacerlo; salvo cuando están histéricos
claro, ahí no hay nada que hacer. Y para mí, de corazón, es el
mejor consejo que te puedo dar.

Expertos recomiendan primero lavar los dientes en pequeños
círculos, y repetir con el movimiento de arriba y abajo para
llegar a todas partes y eliminar todos los restos de comida.
Particularmente, con 4 años, que lo hagan de manera
independiente es un logro por sí mismo, por ese motivo no
espero que aprendan todas las técnicas ni que lo hagan a la
perfección ellos solos. Yo siempre les ayudo a terminar de
lavarse los dientes.
En casa, hemos empezado con una técnica de lavado, y una
vez la domine, empezaremos a introducir la otra; de tal modo
que incrementemos el tiempo de lavado, empiece a hacerlo
de manera totalmente independiente. A día de hoy, ella lo
hace sola y yo los lavo de nuevo antes de terminar.

ACTIVIDADES
Fichas didacticas para ayudar con el lavado de dientes.
En esta ocasión, las actividades que te propongo son muy
simples pero muy eficaces.
Brush your teeth chart es una fantástica manera de ayudar a
nuestros peques a recordar que se tienen que lavar los dientes
3 veces al día. Podéis usar pegatinas, caritas sonrientes o
simplemente 'ticks', pero definitivamente ayudará a que
vuestros hijos estén mas dispuestos a lavárselos y a hacerlo de
buena gana.
La segunda actividad es una boca para que nuestros hijos
limpien con un cepillo. Simplemente imprime la dentadura,
plastifícala y con un rotulador de pizarra, dibuja algunos
gérmenes y bichitos entre los dientes. A continuación, pide a
tus hijos que con un cepillo de dientes (si si, ahí esta la gracia)
¡borren y eliminen todas las bacterias de la boca!
Ya verás como no paráis de reír, y lo mejor, es super efectivo
para aprenden el verdadero significado de lavarse los dientes.
