The objective of a regression model is to try to explain the relationship that exists
between a dependent variable (response variable) and a set of independent
variables (explanatory variables) X
In a simple linear regression model we try to explain the relationship between the
response variable Y and a single explanatory variable X.
Example: In the honey sample we are going to see if there is a linear relationship
between the free acidity (AcLib) and the total acidity (AcTot). To see if a linear
regression model makes sense, we start by drawing a scatterplot.
Where α is the ordinate at the origin (the value that Y takes when X is 0), β is the
slope of the line (and indicates how Y changes when X is increased by one unit) and
ε is a variable that includes a large set of factors, each of which influences the
response only to a small extent, which we will call error. X and Y are random
variables, so an exact linear relationship between them cannot be established.
