El documento “Centroamérica en Cifras” reune un conjunto de estadísticas macroeconómicas, demográficas y sociales

con el fin de presentar el desempeño de la región en el pasado reciente. La información proviene, en la mayoría de los
casos, de publicaciones de las estadísticas oficiales de cada país y organismos pertenecientes al Sistema de Integración
Centroamericano. La elaboración de la presente edición fue coordinada por la Oficina del Economista Jefe del Banco
Centroamericano de Integración Económica, bajo el liderazgo de la Dra. Florencia Castro-Leal, Economista en Jefe y su
compilación estuvo a cargo de Carmen Elisa Méndez, Economista Junior y Miguel Ángel Medina Fonseca, Economista.
The document “Central America Yearbook” collects a set of macroeconomic, demographic and social statistics in order
to present the region’s performance in the recent past. The information presented comes, in most cases, from publications
of the official statistics of each country and organizations belonging to the Central American Integration System. The
preparation of this edition was coordinated by the Office of the Chief Economist of the Central American Bank for Economic
Integration, under the leadership of Dr. Florencia Castro-Leal, Chief Economist, and its compilation was in charge of
Carmen Elisa Méndez, Junior Economist and Miguel Ángel Medina Fonseca, Economist.

Abastecimiento de agua potable: Población que utiliza alguna de las siguientes fuentes de agua para beber: servicios de agua por tubería en la
vivienda, la parcela o el patio, grifos o fuentes públicas, pozo entubado/perforado, pozo excavado cubierto, manantial protegido, recolección de
aguas lluvia. El agua embotellada solo se considera potable si en el hogar existe otra fuente mejorada para cocinar y para la higiene personal.
Drinking water supply: Population that uses any of the following sources of drinking water: piped water services in the house, the plot or the patio,
taps or public sources, cased/drilled well, covered excavated well, protected spring, rainwater harvesting. Bottled water is only considered drinkable
if there is another improved source for cooking and personal hygiene in the home.
Alfabetización: Persona que es capaz de leer y escribir, comprender, una breve y sencilla exposición de hechos relativos a su vida cotidiana.
Literacy: A person who can read and write, understanding it, a brief and simple exposition of facts related to their daily life.
Asentamientos informales: Se consideran sinónimos de barrios de tugurios, con un enfoque particular en el estado formal de la tierra, la estructura
y los servicios. Se definen según tres criterios principales: Los habitantes no tienen seguridad de tenencia con respecto a la tierra o las viviendas en
que habitan, los vecindarios usualmente carecen, o están aislados de, los servicios básicos formales y la infraestructura de la ciudad, y la vivienda
puede no cumplir con las regulaciones actuales de planificación y construcción, a menudo se encuentra en áreas geográficas y ambientalmente
peligrosas, y puede carecer de un permiso municipal.
Informal settlements: These are considered synonyms for slums, with a particular focus on the formal state of the land, structure, and services.
They are defined by three main criteria: Inhabitants have no security of tenure concerning the land or housing they inhabit, neighborhoods usually
lack, or are isolated from, the city’s basic formal services and infrastructure, and housing It may not comply with current planning and construction
regulations, it is often found in geographic and environmentally dangerous areas, and it may lack a municipal permit.
Balanza de pagos: Un estado que resume las transacciones económicas entre residentes y no residentes durante un período determinado.
Balance of payments: A statement that summarizes economic transactions between residents and non-residents during a given period.
Barrios marginales: Se considera que se vive en barrio marginal cuando los habitantes sufren una o más de las siguientes privaciones de los
hogares: Falta de acceso a una fuente de agua mejorada, falta de acceso a instalaciones de saneamiento mejoradas, falta de suficiente área de vida,
falta de durabilidad de la carcasa y, falta de seguridad de tenencia.
Slums: Living in slums is considered when the inhabitants suffer one or more of the following deprivations from homes: Lack of access to an improved
water source, lack of access to improved sanitation facilities, lack of sufficient area of life, lack of casing durability and, lack of security of tenure.

Coeficiente de Gini: El índice de Gini mide hasta qué punto la distribución del ingreso (o, en algunos casos, el gasto de consumo) entre individuos
u hogares dentro de una economía se aleja de una distribución perfectamente equitativa. Una curva de Lorenz muestra los porcentajes acumulados
de ingreso recibido total contra la cantidad acumulada de receptores, empezando a partir de la persona o el hogar más pobre. El índice de Gini
mide la superficie entre la curva de Lorenz y una línea hipotética de equidad absoluta, expresada como porcentaje de la superficie máxima debajo
de la línea.
Gini coefficient: The Gini index measures how far the distribution of income (or, in some cases, consumer spending) between individuals or households
within an economy moves away from a perfectly equitable distribution. A Lorenz curve shows the cumulative percentages of total income received
versus the cumulative number of recipients, starting from the poorest person or household. The Gini index measures the area between the Lorenz
curve and a hypothetical line of absolute equity, expressed as a percentage of the maximum area below the line.

Gasto: El gasto es una disminución del patrimonio neto como resultado de una transacción. Los principales tipos de gasto son la remuneración a
los empleados, el uso de bienes y servicios, el consumo de capital fijo, los intereses, los subsidios, las donaciones, las prestaciones sociales y los
otros gastos.
Expense: Expense is a decrease in equity as a result of a transaction. The main types of expenditures are compensation to employees, use of goods
and services, consumption of fixed capital, interest, subsidies, donations, social benefits, and other expenses.
Gobierno central presupuestario: Instituciones del gobierno central que obtienen la totalidad de sus recursos financieros del presupuesto general de
la nación (república). Comprende en general los ministerios, secretarías, poderes y demás órganos que no registran recursos fuera del presupuesto
general del país.
Central budgetary government: Central government institutions that obtain all of their financial resources from the general budget of the nation
(republic). It generally includes the ministries, secretariats, powers, and other bodies that do not register resources outside the general budget of
the country.

Multidimensional Poverty Index: Percentage of the population that is below the poverty line defined at the national level. The estimation is made from
the results of household surveys.
Inflación: Es el aumento generalizado y sostenido de los precios de una canasta de bienes y servicios consumidos por los hogares de un país,
durante un periodo de tiempo, normalmente un año.
Inflation: It is the generalized and sustained increase in the prices of a basket of goods and services consumed by the households of a country, over
a period of time, usually one year.
Ingreso: El ingreso es un aumento del patrimonio neto como resultado de una transacción. Los principales tipos de ingreso son los impuestos, las
contribuciones sociales, las donaciones y los otros ingresos.
Income: Income is an increase in net worth as a result of a transaction. The main types of income are taxes, social contributions, donations, and other
income.
Ingresos por turismo: Se refiere a la adquisición de bienes y servicios en una economía por parte de personas que están de visita y no son
residentes de esa economía.
Tourism income: Refers to the acquisition of goods and services in an economy by people who are visiting and are not residents of that economy.
Inversión extranjera directa: Es la inversión transfronteriza realizada por un inversionista no residente en el país, y que brinda a este inversionista
el control o un grado significativo de influencia sobre la gestión de la empresa residente en la economía.
Foreign direct investment: It is the cross-border investment made by a non-resident investor in the country, and which gives this investor control or
a significant degree of influence over the management of the resident company in the economy.
Inversión neta en activos no financieros: Equivale a las adquisiciones menos las disposiciones de activos fijos, menos el consumo de capital fijo,
más la variación en existencias, más la adquisición neta (adquisiciones menos disposiciones) de objetos de valor y activos no producidos.
Net investment in non-financial assets: Equivalent to acquisitions less disposals of fixed assets, less consumption of fixed capital, plus variation in
inventories, plus net acquisition (acquisitions less disposals) of valuables and non-produced assets.

Préstamo o endeudamiento neto (finanzas públicas): Se obtiene al sustraer del resultado operativo bruto o neto la inversión neta en activos no
financieros. Es decir, ingreso menos gasto menos inversión neta en activos no financieros. Este es un indicador analítico que señala el grado en
que un gobierno está colocando recursos financieros a disposición de otros sectores en la economía o en el exterior, o está utilizando recursos
financieros generados por otros sectores de la economía o en el exterior. Por lo tanto, puede considerarse que es un indicador del impacto
financiero de la actividad del gobierno en el resto de la economía y el resto del mundo.
Net loan or debt (public finances): Obtained by subtracting the net investment in non-financial assets from the gross or net operating result. That
is income less expense less net investment in non-financial assets. This is an analytical indicator that indicates the degree to which a government
is making financial resources available to other sectors in the economy or abroad, or is using financial resources generated by other sectors of the
economy or abroad. Therefore, it can be considered as an indicator of the financial impact of government activity on the rest of the economy and
the rest of the world.

Producto Interno Bruto (PIB): Es un indicador económico que refleja el valor monetario de los todos los bienes y servicios finales producidos por
un país o región en un determinado periodo de tiempo, normalmente un año.
Gross Domestic Product (GDP): It is an economic indicator that reflects the monetary value of all the goods and final services produced by a country
or region in a certain period, normally one year.
Remesas recibidas: son transferencias corrientes en efectivo, realizadas por empleados residentes en el resto del mundo (no residentes) a favor
de residentes de la economía.
Remittances received: these are current cash transfers made by employees residing in the rest of the world (non-residents) in favor of residents of
the economy.
Reservas internacionales netas: se definen como activos externos que están disponibles de inmediato y bajo el control de las autoridades monetarias
para satisfacer necesidades de financiamiento de la balanza de pagos, para intervenir en los mercados cambiarios a fin de influir sobre el tipo de
cambio y para otros fines conexos como el mantenimiento de la confianza en la moneda y la economía y servir como base para el endeudamiento
externo. Los activos de reserva deben ser activos en moneda extranjera y estar realmente constituidos.
Net international reserves: defined as external assets that are immediately available and under the control of the monetary authorities to satisfy the
balance of payments financing needs, to intervene in the foreign exchange markets to influence the exchange rate and to other related purposes
such as maintaining confidence in the currency and the economy and serving as a basis for external indebtedness. Reserve assets must be assets in
foreign currency and be constituted.

Resultado operativo bruto o neto: Se obtiene al sustraer el gasto de la partida de ingreso. El resultado operativo bruto difiere del resultado
operativo neto en que no incluye el consumo de capital fijo como gasto.
Gross or net operating result: Obtained by subtracting the expense from the income item. Gross operating profit differs from net operating profit in
that it does not include the consumption of fixed capital as an expense.
Saldo de bienes y servicios: Esta cuenta se concentra en el momento en que los bienes y servicios son intercambiados entre un residente y un no
residente. Es decir, las exportaciones de bienes y servicios menos las importaciones de bienes y servicios.
Balance of goods and services: This account is concentrated at the moment when the goods and services are exchanged between a resident and a
non-resident. That is, exports of goods and services less imports of goods and services.
Saldo de cuenta corriente: Presenta la diferencia entre la suma de las exportaciones y los ingresos por cobrar, y la suma de las importaciones y los
ingresos por pagar. El saldo en cuenta corriente representa la brecha ahorro-inversión de la economía.
Current account balance: Presents the difference between the sum of exports and income receivable, and the sum of imports and income payable.
The current account balance represents the savings-investment gap of the economy.
Saldo del ingreso primario: El ingreso primario refleja el rendimiento que producen el suministro de mano de obra y activos financieros y la
suscripción de rentas de recursos naturales, por ejemplo, remuneraciones de empleados, dividendos, intereses, utilidad reinvertidas entre otros.
El saldo del ingreso primario muestra el ingreso primario neto por cobrar de la economía compiladora, definido como el valor total del ingreso
primario por cobrar de la economía compiladora menos el valor total del ingreso primario por pagar.
Balance of primary income: Primary income reflects the performance produced by the supply of labor and financial assets and the subscription
of natural resource rents, for example, employee remuneration, dividends, interests, reinvested earnings, among others. The balance of primary
income shows the net primary income receivable from the compiling economy, defined as the total value of the primary income receivable from the
compiling economy minus the total value of the primary income payable.

Services: Services are the result of a productive activity that modifies the state of the consuming units or facilitates the exchange of products or
financial assets. Services are generally not separate articles on which property rights can be established and generally cannot be separated from
their production.
Tasa bruta de mortalidad: Expresa la frecuencia con que ocurren las defunciones en una población dada.
Crude mortality rate: Expresses the frequency with which deaths occur in a given population.
Tasa bruta de natalidad: Mide la frecuencia de los nacimientos ocurridos en un período con relación a la población total. Es el cociente entre el
número de nacimientos ocurridos durante un período dado y la población media de ese período. Tasa por 1.000 habitantes
Crude birth rate: Measures the frequency of births occurring in a period in relation to the total population. It is the quotient between the number of
births that occurred during a given period and the average population of that period. Rate per 1,000 inhabitants.
Tasa global de fecundidad: Es el número de hijos que en promedio tendría una mujer de una cohorte hipotética de mujeres que durante su vida
fértil tuvieran sus hijos de acuerdo con las tasas de fecundidad por edad del período en estudio y no estuvieran expuestas a riesgos de mortalidad
desde el nacimiento hasta la finalización del período fértil.
Global fertility rate: It is the number of children that on average would have a woman from a hypothetical cohort of women who had their children
during their fertile life according to the fertility rates by age of the period under study and were not exposed to risks of mortality from birth to the
end of the fertile period.
Tasa neta de educación primaria y secundaria: Proporción de alumnos, en edad escolar oficial, matriculados en cada nivel de enseñanza, como
porcentaje de la población total de niños en edad escolar oficial.
Net rate of primary and secondary education: Proportion of students, of official school age, enrolled at each level of education, as a percentage of
the total population of children of official school age
Vivienda inadecuada: Para que la vivienda sea adecuada, debe proporcionar más de cuatro paredes y un techo, y como mínimo, cumplir con
los siguientes criterios: Seguridad jurídica de la tenencia, disponibilidad de servicios de infraestructura y saneamiento, confiabilidad, Habilidad,
Accesibilidad, Localización y Adecuación Cultural.
Inadequate housing: For housing to be adequate, it must provide more than four walls and a roof, and as a minimum, meet the following criteria:
Legal security of tenure, availability of infrastructure and sanitation services, reliability, Skill, Accessibility, Location and Cultural Adequacy.
