Trefethen Double T Napa Red Wine

This wine is a blend of the five classic red Bordeaux varieties, with Cabernet Sauvignon augmented by smaller amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. It offers fragrant aromas of plums, blackberry jam, black pepper, clove and toasted oak. Medium bodied, the palate displays flavors of blackberries, raspberries and currants with rich chocolate on the finish. Vega Izn Tinto Joven Ribera del Duero, Espaa, 2009 Color rojo frambuesa con ribetes violetas, de buena capa e intensidad. Aromas limpios con la pesonalidad de la variedad tinta fina, bien armonizada con el roble. En boca se perciben sus taninos bien definidos si bien resulta al fresco y sabroso. La Montesa, Herencia Palacios Remondo Rioja, Espaa, 2007 Alvaro Palacios is doing great things in the Rioja Baja. This blend of 45% Tempranillo, 40% Garnacha, and 15% Graciano and Mazuelo is aged in French oak for 14 months. The warm 2007 vintage has been translated into a rich and generous wine, with notes of hedgerow, blackberries, vanillin and spice all evidenced on the palalte. Excellent length and fine tannins complete the picture; those who love the classic Rioja profile, with its intimations of decadence and comfort, will not be disappointed here. Kendall-Jackson Vintners Chardonnay California, 2009 89 | Robert Parker There are several million cases of the 2009 Vintners Reserve Chardonnay (100% estate grown Chardonnay that is, remarkably, 100% barrel fermented), which comes primarily from Jess Jacksons coastal properties in Monterey and Santa Barbara. Winemaker Randy Ullom told me he manages to stir the lees on all the barrels once a month, which is astonishing. Abundant aromas of white peach, honeysuckle, green apple skins and a hint of tropical fruits jump from the glass of this medium-bodied, crisp, dry, fruity, well-made Chardonnay. It is a sensational bargain. Beautifully integrated tropical flavors such as pineapple, mango, and papaya with citrus notes that explode in your mouth. These flavors delicately intertwine with aromas of vanilla and honey to create depth and balance throughout. With Merlot, the objective is to create a wine that has structure and complexity, but soft, smooth tannins. We find that sourcing fruit from several different appellations works best to give us a Merlot that exudes multiple layers of flavor and a nice seductive texture. We also blend in small amounts of Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Petit Verdot to achieve a richer color. Grapes that come from Napa provide weight, sweet fruit flavors and the intense aromatics of fresh berries, while the Sonoma fruit contributes natural acidity to create more balance and finesse. Monterey County grapes provide concentration; a result of the well-drained sandy loam soils that characterize the region. 2008 was a challenging vintage that delivered a very small crop as a result of spring frost that devastated many of the vines. In fact, some vineyards lost 50% of their fruit. The upside to having fewer grape clusters is the aromatics become more profound and flavors more concentrated and complex. Rich, fruity and elegantly textured this wine delivers soft, velvety tannins, and a touch of oak from barrel aging.
