RESUMEN
La tradición de las traducciones del Tao Te Ching en el mundo anglófono e
hispánico, especialmente desde la segunda mitad del siglo XX hasta nuestros días,
muestra una gran variedad de versiones y de interpretaciones. Este trabajo ha
seleccionado la traducción inglesa de Arthur Waley (1934) y las traducciones
españolas de Iñaki Preciado (1978, 2006) aportando una reflexión sobre sus
interpretaciones del Tao Te Ching a través de los aspectos de la traducción que utilizan.
Analizando datos y paratextos y basándonos en el concepto thick translation de Appiah
(1993), se exponen de manera detallada los elementos de cada traducción
comparándolas y estudiando las convergencias entre ellas, probando en último término
la incesante y variada interpretación del Taoísmo en la cultura occidental.

ABSTRACT

The tradition of translations of the Tao Te Ching in Anglophone and Hispanic

worlds, especially from the second half of the 20th century until today, shows a wide
variety of versions and interpretations. This study has selected the English translation
by Arthur Waley (1934) and the Spanish translations by Iñaki Preciado (1978, 2006)
to provide a reflection on their interpretation of the Tao Te Ching taking into account
different aspects of the translation used by both authors. Analyzing data and paratexts
and taking as basis the concept of “thick translation” (Appiah,1993), a comparison of
both translations exposes convergences and proves, ultimately, the incessant and
varied interpretations of Taoism in the Western culture.
