Introduction (Introducción)
The Nutcracker is a classic Christmas story. A young girl receives a Christmas gift of a nutcracker.
However, it is no ordinary gift. She sees a whole new world thanks to the gift.
El Cascanueces es un cuento clásico de Navidad. Una niña recibe como regalo de Navidad un
cascanueces. Sin embargo, no es un regalo ordinario. Ella ve un mundo completamente
nuevo gracias al regalo.
This magical story is well loved in many countries. The famous composer Tchaikovsky set the story
to music. In the 1890s, the story was made into a ballet. People around the world still watch this
baller at Christmas time.
Esta mágica historia es muy querida en muchos países. El famoso compositor Tchaikovsky
puso música a la historia. En la década de 1890, la historia se convirtió en un ballet.

Chapter 1 - Christmas Eve (Capítulo 1 - Nochebuena)

“What do you think Uncle has made?” Fritz asked his older sister Marie.
“¿Qué crees que ha hecho el tío?” Fritz le preguntó a su hermana mayor Marie.
The children were waiting in the hall outside the living room. It was Christmas Eve, but they were
not yet allowed to see the Christmas tree. Soon, though, they would be allowed in and given their
present.
Los niños estaban esperando en el pasillo fuera de la sala de estar. Era Nochebuena, pero aún
no se les permitía ver el árbol de Navidad. Pronto, sin embargo, se les permitiría entrar y se
les daría su regalo.
“U hope it’s a garden,” said Marie, dreamily.
“Espero que sea un jardín”, dijo Marie, soñadora.
“Well, I hope it’s a fortress with lots of soldiers,” said Fritz.

The door to the living room opened, throwing light over the children. They ran inside to join their
family. Marie and Fritz looked at the Christmas tree. “Oh! It’s the most beautiful ever!” they
shouted.

su familia. Marie y Fritz miraron el árbol de Navidad. "¡Vaya! ¡Es el más hermoso de todos!”

The children were given their presents. Fritz was given an army of toy soldiers. Marie was given a
strange wooden doll. She looked at it carefully.

Marie’s doll had a large head and body, but its legs were very thin. Strangest of all was the lever
on the doll’s back. This opened and closed the doll’s mouth.

The children’s uncle was a great clockmaker. Every year he made a clockwork scene. Now he
proudly revealed his newest creation.

“It’s a castle!” cried Fritz.
“¡Es un castillo!” exclamó Fritz.
Uncle wound a spring, and the pieces started to move. Soldiers walked along the walls, swans
swam in the lake, and the king and queen walked onto their balcony.
El tío enrolló un resorte y las piezas comenzaron a moverse. Los soldados caminaron a lo
largo de las paredes, los cisnes nadaron en el lago y el rey y la reina caminaron hacia su
balcón.
“Make the soldiers fire their guns!” Fritz shouted.

“I’m afraid I can’t do that,” said Uncle.

“How boring! My toys are better,” said Fritz as he returned to play with his soldiers.

 Chapter 2 (Capítulo 2)
The Story of the Nutcracker (La historia del cascanueces)
Marie sat holding her strange wooden doll. Although the doll looked very strange, Marie felt it was
king. She looked into its big green eyes.
Marie se sentó sosteniendo su extraña muñeca de madera. Aunque la muñeca se veía muy
extraña. Marie sintió que era el rey. Miró sus grandes ojos verdes.
“Do you know how the nutcracker works?” asked Uncle, sitting down next to her.
“¿Sabes cómo funciona el cascanueces?” preguntó el tío, sentándose a su lado.
“He’s a nutcracker?” asked Marie in surprise.
"¿Él es un cascanueces?" preguntó Marie sorprendida.
“Yes,” laughed Uncle. “Let me show you”.
“Sí”, se rió el tío. "Deja que te enseñe".
Uncle held the wooden doll and lifted the lever to open his mouth. Then he put a nut inside. When
he pushed the lever down, the nutcracker closed his mouth and cracked the nut.
El tío sostuvo la muñeca de madera y levantó la palanca para abrir la boca. Luego metió una
nuez dentro. Cuando empujó la palanca hacia abajo, el cascanueces cerró la boca y partió la
nuez.
“A long time ago, the nutcracker was a real young man,” said Uncle, “He lived in a nice kingdom.”
"Hace mucho tiempo, el cascanueces era un hombre muy joven", dijo el tío, "Vivía en un
reino agradable".
“The princess had been bitten by the Mouse King,” continued Uncle. “The bite made her sick. The
king promised a great reward to whoever could save the princess.

enfermó. El rey prometió una gran recompensa a quien pudiera salvar a la princesa.

The nutcracker knew how to save the princess. She had to eat the Crackatoo nut,” explained
Uncle.

“I’ve never heard of the Crackatoo,” said Marie.
“Nunca he oído hablar del Crackatoo”, dijo Marie.
“Well, the Crackatoo nut has the hardest shell in the world,” said Uncle.
“Bueno, la nuez de Crackatoo tiene la cáscara más dura del mundo”, dijo el tío.
“Everyone was hopeful when they tried to open it, no one could crack the shell. They didn’t know
what to do. But then the nutcracker placed the Crackatoo nut in his mouth,” said Uncle with a
smile. “He pulled his hair and he cracked the nut!”
“Todos tenían esperanzas cuando intentaron abrirlo, nadie podía romper el caparazón. No
sabían qué hacer. Pero entonces el cascanueces se metió la nuez de Crackatoo en la boca”,

“Everyone cheered when the princess was cured. Everyone except the Mouse King,” Uncle said
sadly. “The Mouse King ran out from his hole and bit the nutcracker on the leg. The young man
shrank and turned into this wooden doll.”
“Todos vitorearon cuando la princesa se curó. Todos excepto el Rey Ratón. Tío dijo con
tristeza. “El Rey Ratón salió corriendo de su agujero y mordió al cascanueces en la pierna.
El joven se encogió y se convirtió en este muñeco de madera”.
 Chapter 3 - Prince of the Toys (Capítulo 3 - Príncipe de los juguetes)
Marie couldn’t sleep that night. Could Uncle’s story be true? Could the nutcracker have once been
a real young man? Marie had to see the strange wooden doll again.
Marie no pudo dormir esa noche. ¿Podría ser cierta la historia del tío? ¿Podría el
cascanueces haber sido una vez un hombre joven de verdad? Marie tenía que volver a ver la
extraña muñeca de madera.
The children’s toys were kept in a glass display case in the living room. Marie went into the room
and lit a single light. The light reflected off the beautiful Christmas tree and gave the room a
magical feel.
Los juguetes de los niños se guardaban en una vitrina de cristal en el salón. Marie entró en
la habitación y encendió una sola luz. La luz se reflejaba en el hermoso árbol de Navidad y le
daba a la habitación una sensación mágica.
She stood in front of the display case looking at the nutcracker. He looked so kind. Of course he
would have helped a princess.
Se paró frente a la vitrina mirando el cascanueces. Parecía tan amable. Por supuesto que
habría ayudado a una princesa.
Marie felt sad. The young man had been turned into a nutcracker. So he never got his great
reward. Marie decided that the nutcracker would be the prince of the toys. She opened the glass
case and picked up the nutcracker.
Marie se sintió triste. El joven se había convertido en un cascanueces. Así que nunca obtuvo
su gran recompensa. Marie decidió que el cascanueces sería el príncipe de los juguetes. Abrió
la vitrina y cogió el cascanueces.

Marie introduced the nutcracker to all of her toys.

“These are your subjects,” Marie explained to him. “You must rule over them fairly and protect
them always.”

siempre”.
Marie addressed the other toys next. “And you must do what the nutcracker tells you to do. Treat
him well,” she said.

“These are Fritz’s toy soldiers,” Marie told the nutcracker. She showed him the toys in the lower
shelves of the display case. “They are the army of the toy kingdom. They will help you if you need
to go to war.”
“Estos son los soldados de juguete de Fritz”, le dijo Marie al cascanueces. Ella le mostró los
juguetes en los estantes inferiores de la vitrina. “Son el ejército del reino de los juguetes. Te

Marie laughed to herself. When would the toys ever need to go to war? Still, a prince needs to have
an army.

Just then, Marie heard a noise. It was soft at first, but the sound grew louder. Soon, it sounded
like a hundred mice were moving through the walls and floors!.

 Chapter 4 (Capítulo 4)
Attack of the Mouse Army (El ataque del ejército de ratones)
Marie was scared. She looked at the clock. It wasn’t the clock’s face she saw. It was Uncle’s!
Marie estaba asustada. Ella miró el reloj. No fue la esfera del reloj lo que vio. ¡Era del tío!
“The Mouse King is coming,” warned the clock in Uncle’s voice.
“Viene el Rey Ratón”, advirtió el reloj con la voz del Tío.
The clock struck midnight, and magic swept over the rom. Marie felt herself shrinking. She was the
same size as the nutcracker now. She looked again into his kind green eyes.
El reloj marcó la medianoche y la magia se apoderó de la habitación. Marie sintió que se
encogía. Ahora tenía el mismo tamaño que el cascanueces. Volvió a mirar sus amables ojos
verdes.
His eyes were even kinder than before. Marie felt the nutcracker catch her as she fainted. His arms
were soft. The nutcracker was, once again, a young man.

mientras se desmayaba. Sus brazos eran suaves. El cascanueces era, una vez más, un

Marie awoke in the nutcracker’s arms. She looked up at his face, but he did not look back. He
seemed to be looking at something. Marie turned to see what he was looking at.
Marie se despertó en los brazos del cascanueces. Ella lo miró a la cara, pero él no miró hacia
atrás. Parecía estar mirando algo. Marie se volvió para ver lo que estaba mirando.

Mice stood at attention in rows. They wore old uniforms and were armed with silver toothpicks,
tiny forks, and sewing needles. A large mouse wearing a crown walked through the ranks of his
soldiers. Marie knew this was the Mouse King.
Los ratones se cuadraron en filas. Vestían uniformes viejos y estaban armados con palillos de
plata, pequeños tenedores y agujas de coser. Un gran ratón con una corona caminó entre las
filas de sus soldados. Marie sabía que este era el Rey Ratón.
“I found you at last,” said the Mouse King. “Now we will end this!”

Fritz’s toy soldiers joined the battle. They fought bravely, but the army of mice was stronger. It
looked as if the battle would be last.
Los soldados de juguete de Fritz se unieron a la batalla. Lucharon valientemente, pero el

The Mouse King and the nutcracker were fighting each other. Suddenly, the nutcracker tripped.
The Mouse King leaped on him.

Marie look off her slipper and threw it at the Mouse King, hitting him in the face!

Surprised the Mouse King stopped. Then Marie felt a sharp pain on her arm – one of the mouse
soldiers had bitten her!

 Chapter 5 - Marie’s Illness (Capítulo 5 - La enfermedad de Marie)

Marie opened he eyes. She was in her bed. Her mother was next to her holding a damp cloth to her
forehead.
Marie abrió los ojos. Ella estaba en su cama. Su madre estaba a su lado sosteniendo un paño
húmedo en su frente.
“Where’s the nutcracker?” asked Marie.
"¿Dónde está el cascanueces?" preguntó Marie.
“Your toys are in the glass case, but you may not play with them now,” Mother replied. “You have a
fever. You need rest.”
“Tus juguetes están en la vitrina, pero ahora no puedes jugar con ellos”, respondió la madre.
"Tienes fiebre. Necesitas descansar."
“Yes,” said Marie, remembering. “I was bitten by a mouse on my arm.”
“Sí”, dijo Marie, recordando. “Me mordió un ratón en el brazo”.
“A mouse?” cried Mother in surprise. She checked Marie’s arm. “There is no bite on your arm. And
there are no mice in this house!”
"¿Un ratón?" —exclamó su madre sorprendida. Comprobó el brazo de Marie. “No hay
mordida en tu brazo. ¡Y no hay ratones en esta casa!
That evening, Uncle and Fritz came to visit Marie.

“It was terrible.” Marie said to Uncle. “The Mouse King came with his mouse army. And you! You
were in the clock!”
"Fue terrible." Marie le dijo al tío. “El Rey Ratón vino con su ejército de ratones. ¡Y tú!
¡Estabas en el reloj!

“If the Mouse King was here,” said Uncle seriously, “he must want revenge on the nutcracker.”
"Si el Rey Ratón estuvo aquí", dijo el tío con seriedad, "debe querer vengarse del
cascanueces".
“The nutcracker needs a good sword,” said Fritz. “I’m sure I have an extra one for him.”
“El cascanueces necesita una buena espada”, dijo Fritz. "Estoy seguro de que tengo una

“What’s all this excitement?” asked Mother as she entered the room. “Marie needs to get some
sleep. Everybody out!”

Marie couldn’t sleep well. Her dreams were filled with the nutcracker and the Mouse King.
Suddenly, she sat up in bed.

repente, se sentó en la cama.
“Did you lose your slipper?” came the Mouse King’s voice. He was standing at the end of her in his
paw, he held Marie’s tiny slippers.

“I had to throw that slipper at you. You would have hurt the nutcracker,” said Marie.

“I’ll still hurt the nutcracker,° said the Mouse King. “I’ll chew him up right now.”

The Mouse King disappeared. Marie jumped out of her bed and ran downstairs.

Chapter 6 - The Mouse King Attacks (Capítulo 6 - El Rey Ratón ataca)

The living room was dark when Marie ran in. She lit the single lamp as she the previous night, and
the Christmas tree again reflected the light with a magical feel. She rushed to the glass display
case, fearing she would be too late.
La sala de estar estaba a oscuras cuando Marie entró corriendo. Encendió la única lámpara
como lo había hecho la noche anterior, y el árbol de Navidad volvió a reflejar la luz con una
sensación mágica. Corrió hacia la vitrina de cristal, temiendo llegar demasiado tarde.
The nutcracker stood unharmed among Marie’s other toys. Looking closer, she saw that Fritz had
given the nutcracker a beautiful toy sword. Marie was sure that the nutcracker would be able to
defend himself now.
El cascanueces permaneció ileso entre los otros juguetes de Marie. Mirando más de cerca,
vio que Fritz le había dado al cascanueces una hermosa espada de juguete. Marie estaba
segura de que el cascanueces podría defenderse ahora.
“The Mouse King is almost here,” came Uncle’s voice. Marie turned to see Uncle’s face in the face of
the clock. At that moment, the clock struck midnight. Magic once again filled the room.
“El Rey Ratón ya casi está aquí”, dijo la voz del Tío. Marie se volvió para ver la cara del tío
en la esfera del reloj. En ese momento, el reloj marcó la medianoche. La magia una vez más

Marie again began to shrink. The toys in the case watched her. Then the nutcracker climbed down
and joined Marie on the floor.

“I’m glad you’re OK,” said Marie.

“Thank you for saving me last night,” said the nutcracker, “But tonight I must face the Mouse King
alone.”

A shadow moved across the wall, and the nutcracker gave chase. Marie watched as the nutcracker
swung his sword at the Mouse King. They fought across the living room.

el cascanueces balanceaba su espada hacia el Rey Ratón. Pelearon a través de la sala de

The two fighters reached the Christmas tree. They began to climb, fighting from branch to branch.
They fought all the way to the top of the tree.

The nutcracker swung his sword at the mouse. Marie turned away as the Mouse King fell to the

 Chapter 7 – Kingdom of the Toys (Capítulo 7 – Reino de los juguetes)

“The Mouse King is beaten at last,” said the nutcracker to Marie. “Come with me to my kingdom.”
“El Rey Ratón por fin ha sido vencido”, le dijo el cascanueces a Marie. “Ven conmigo a mi
reino”.
“You kingdom?” asked Marie in surprise.
"¿Tu reino?" preguntó Marie sorprendida.
“Yes,” said the nutcracker. “As you know, I am the prince of the toys.”
“Sí”, dijo el cascanueces. “Como sabes, soy el príncipe de los juguetes”.
Marie and the nutcracker walked to Uncle’s clockwork castle. They climbed through the gates, and
Uncle’s clockwork soldiers saluted their prince.
Marie y el cascanueces caminaron hasta el castillo mecánico del tío. Treparon por las
puertas y los soldados mecánicos del tío saludaron a su príncipe.
When the nutcracker opened the main door to the castle, Marie was surprise. The door led to
another world! She held the nutcracker’s hand as they walked through the door.
Cuando el cascanueces abrió la puerta principal del castillo, Marie se sorprendió. ¡La puerta
conducía a otro mundo! Sostuvo la mano del cascanueces mientras cruzaban la puerta.

The nutcracker and Marie reached a lake where giant swans in lazy circles. When they saw the
nutcracker and Marie, one of the swans swam over to them.
El cascanueces y Marie llegaron a un lago donde cisnes gigantes en perezosos círculos.
Cuando vieron al cascanueces ya Marie, uno de los cisnes nadó hacia ellos.
“We can ride on the back of the swan,” said the nutcracker. He lifted Marie over the swan’s neck.
Then he sat behind her on the swan’s back.
“Podemos montar en el lomo del cisne”, dijo el cascanueces. Levantó a Marie sobre el cuello

The swan flew high into the clouds. Soon, a castle appeared sitting on top of a large white cloud.
The swan landed, gracefully delivering its passengers.

Marie was surprised when they entered the castle.

“Of course they are,” laughed the nutcracker.

“They are mu subjects. I must rule over them fairly and protect them always.”

Then the nutcracker looked at Marie very seriously. He got down on one knee.
Entonces el cascanueces miró a Marie muy serio. Se puso de rodillas.
“Marie, marry me,” he said. “Stay here and rule over the toys with me.”
“Marie, cásate conmigo”, dijo. “Quédate aquí y gobierna los juguetes conmigo”.
“You are so kind,” replied Marie. “But I can’t stay here.”
“Eres muy amable”, respondió Marie. “Pero no puedo quedarme aquí”.
Suddenly, the nutcracker became a doll again.
De repente, el cascanueces volvió a convertirse en un muñeco.
Chapter 8 – Return of the Nutcracker (Capítulo 8 – El regreso del cascanueces)

Marie sttod alone in the castle. All around her. The toys had turned back into toys. The
nutcracker lay wooden on the floor next to her. She fell to her knees and began to cry. She didn´t
hear the scratching noise behind her.
Marie se quedó sola en el castillo. A su alrededor. Los juguetes se habían vuelto a convertir
en juguetes. El cascanueces yacía de madera en el suelo junto a ella. Cayó de rodillas y
empezó a llorar. No escuchó el ruido de arañazos detrás de ella.
“Finally, I shall have my revenge!” said the Mouse King.
"¡Finalmente, tendré mi venganza!" dijo el Rey Ratón.
Marie heard this. She grabbed Fritz’s sword and turned to face the Mouse King. She charged him
and knocked him out of the castle window. Down fell the Mouse King through the clouds.
Marie escuchó esto. Agarró la espada de Fritz y se volvió para mirar al Rey Ratón. Ella cargó
contra él y lo tiró por la ventana del castillo. Abajo cayó el Rey Ratón a través de las nubes.
Marie woke in her bed. She looked around in surprise.
Marie se despertó en su cama. Miró a su alrededor sorprendida.
“How are you feeling?” asked Mother, who was again sitting with her daughter.
"¿Cómo te sientes?" preguntó la madre, que estaba otra vez sentada con su hija.
“I was with the nutcracker in the toy castle.” Explained Marie. “I stopped the Mouse King.”
“Estaba con el cascanueces en el castillo de juguete”. explicó María. "Detuve al Rey Ratón".

“Don´t be silly,” said Mother. “You’ve been dreaming, Marie.”

“No seas tonta”, dijo mamá. Has estado soñando, Marie.
Still, Marie insisted on going to the living room to check her toys. When she reached the glass
display case, she gave a shout. The nutcracker was gone!
Aún así, Marie insistió en ir a la sala de estar para revisar sus juguetes. Cuando llegó a la
vitrina de cristal, dio un grito. ¡El cascanueces se había ido!
A knock came at the door. Marie turned away from the glass case and wiped away her tears. Uncle
had come to visit.
Llamaron a la puerta. Marie se apartó de la vitrina y se secó las lágrimas. El tío había venido
de visita.
“Oh, Uncle,” said Marie when she saw him.
“Oh, tío”, dijo Marie cuando lo vio.
“Just a minute, Marie,” said Uncle, his face full of understanding and happiness. “I’d like to
introduce the son of my dear friend.”
“Un momento, Marie”, dijo el tío, con el rostro lleno de comprensión y felicidad. "Me
gustaría presentarles al hijo de mi querido amigo".
Marie recognized the young man at once. The Mouse King was gone, so the nutcracker’s curse had
been broken. He was now a real young man once again.
Marie reconoció al joven de inmediato. El Rey Ratón se había ido, por lo que la maldición del
cascanueces se había roto. Ahora era un verdadero joven una vez más.
Marie giggled as he kissed her hand.
Marie se rió cuando él le besó la mano.
