ESCENA 1
Luz sobre SCROOGE, quien cuenta su dinero.
NARRATOR: It was Christmas time in London, where a man called Scrooge lived: he was a sad man,
an angry man, a lonely man: a man whom no warmth could warm, and no cold could chill…
NARRADOR: Era tiempo de navidad en Londres, donde un hombre llamado Scrooge vivía: era un
hombe triste, un hombre enfadado, un hombre solitario: un hombre al que ningún calor podía calentar y
al que ningún frío podía enfriar.
Luz general. A unos pasos de SCROOGE, BOB CRATCHIT, su asistente, hace cuentas en un
cuaderno. En un momento, Bob se detiene para frotarse los brazos y tiritar del frío.
SCROOGE: Why did you stop?
SCROOGE: ¿Por qué te detuviste?
BOB: Sorry, Mr. Scrooge.
BOB: Perdón, señor Scrooge.
SCROOGE: Be a man, Robert. Do you know how much heating costs these days?
SCROOGE: Pórtate como hombre, Roberto. ¿Sabes cuánto cuesta la calefacción en estos tiempos?
BOB: Yes, sir. Sorry, sir.
BOB: Sí, señor. Perdón, señor.
Siguen en lo suyo. Silencio largo. Tocan a la puerta.
SCROOGE: Come in!
SCROOGE: ¡Siga!
Se oyen pasos y entra ELIZABETH, la sobrina de Scrooge.
ELIZABETH: Merry christmas, uncle!
ELIZABETH: ¡Feliz navidad, tío!
Pasa frente a Bob.
ELIZABETH: Merry Christmas, Bob.
ELIZABETH: Feliz navidad, Bob.
BOB: Merry Christmas, Miss Elizabeth.
BOB: Feliz navidad, señorita Elizabeth.
SCROOGE (contando el dinero): Christmas is nonsense. A big, fat lie.
SCROOGE: La navidad es un sinsentido. Una gran mentira.
ELIZABETH: You don’t mean that, uncle.
ELIZABETH: Tú no quieres decir eso, tío.
SCROOGE: I do. Besides, why are you happy? You’re poor!
SCROOGE: Sí, lo hago. Además, ¿por qué estás feliz? ¡Eres pobre!
ELIZABETH: And why are you grumpy? You’re rich!
ELIZABETH: ¿Y por qué estás gruñón? ¡Eres rico!
SCROOGE: Bleah…
ELIZABETH: Don’t get mad!
ELIZABETH: ¡No te molestes!
SCROOGE: Why not? (sigue contando el dinero) “Merry Christmas”… It’s just a time to spend money
on gifts!
SCROOGE: ¿Por qué no? (sigue contando el dinero) “Feliz navidad”…. ¡Es una época de gastar
dinero en regalos!
ELIZABETH: But uncle!
ELIZABETH: ¡Pero, tío!
SCROOGE: Go away!
SCROOGE: ¡Vete!
Silencio.
ELIZABETH: I think Christmas is a time for getting along and opening your heart. I know it hasn’t made
me rich; but it has made me happy.
ELIZABETH: Creo que la navidad es un tiempo para llevarnos bien y abrir el corazón. Sé que no me ha
hecho rica, pero me ha hecho feliz.
SCROOGE le aplaude.
ELIZABETH (molesta): Ha, ha… (pausa) I’ll be waiting for you at home tomorrow. My husband is
cooking a delicious meal and you are our special guest.
ELIZABETH: Ja, ja… Te estaré esperando en casa mañana. Mi esposo está cocinando una cena
deliciosa y eres nuestro invitado especial.
SCROOGE: No thanks.
SCROOGE: No, gracias.
ELIZABETH: But-
ELIZABETH: Pero-
SCROOGE: Go away!
SCROOGE: ¡Vete!
Silencio.
ELIZABETH: As you wish, uncle. You are welcome tomorrow, anyway.
ELIZABETH: Como desees, tío. Eres bienvenido mañana, en todo caso.
Sale.
ELIZABETH: Goodbye, Bob!
ELIZABETH: ¡Adiós, Bob!
BOB: Goodbye!
BOB: ¡Adios!
ELIZABETH sale.
SCROOGE: What a fool, don’t you think, Robert?
SCROOGE: ¡Qué tonto! ¿No crees, Roberto?
Bob se encoge de hombros. Siguen trabajando, y al cabo de un momento, Bob cierra su libro, lo
guarda y se levanta.
BOB: I finished everything, Sir, and it’s time to close. May I go now?
BOB: Terminé todo, señor, y es hora de cerrar. ¿Puedo irme?
SCROOGE: Yes.
SCROOGE: Sí.
Scrooge sigue en lo suyo y Bob se queda parado frente a él.
SCROOGE: What?
SCROOGE: ¿Qué?
BOB: I’m sorry, sir… Tomorrow is Christmas, and…
BOB: Lo siento, señor, mañana es navidad, y…
SCROOGE: And you want the day off…
SCROOGE: Y quieres el día libre…
BOB: If you don’t mind, Sir.
BOB: Si no le importa, señor.
Silencio largo.
SCROOGE: Alright. But come early the day after.
SCROOGE: Está bien. Pero ven temprano el día después.
BOB: Thanks, sir. Good night.
BOB: Gracias, señor. Buenas noches.
Bob sale. Scrooge sigue en lo suyo.
SCROOGE: Stupid Christmas… Paying him for not working!
SCROOGE: Estúpida navidad… ¡Pagarle por no trabajar!
Oscuro.

ESCENA 2
NARRADOR: Scrooge finished working late that night. When he arrived home, he climbed the stairs
and ate a cold dinner.
NARRADOR: Scrooge terminó de trabajar tarde esa noche. Cuando llegó a casa, trepó las escaleras y
comió una cena fría.
Luz. Scrooge mira la tele y se ríe. De repente, la tele deja de sonar, y, en su lugar, suenan unas
campanas. Scrooge golpea su control, pero nada sucede. En la pantalla de la tele aparece una cara:
es el ESPÍRITU DE MARLEY.
MARLEY: Scrooge!
Scrooge queda paralizado.
SCROOGE: Who… who are you?
SCROOGE: ¿Quién… quién eres tú?
MARLEY: I’m the spirit of Jacob Marley, your former associate.
MARLEY: Soy el espíritu de Jacob Marley, tu antiguo socio.
SCROOGE se frota los ojos.
SCROOGE: I must be dreaming... (al Espíritu) What do you want?
SCROOGE: Debo estar soñando… ¿Qué quieres?
MARLEY: I want to warn you. Do you see these chains?
MARLEY: Quiero advertirte. ¿Ves estas cadenas?
El espíritu levanta las manos y le muestra unas cadenas.
MARLEY: I am forever chained to my sins…
MARLEY: Estoy encadenado para siempre a mis pecados…
SCROOGE: What sins? You were a hard worker!
SCROOGE: ¿Qué pecados? ¡Fuiste un hombre trabajador!
MARLEY: None of it was useful! I took advantage of people! I never loved anyone! Now I have to
wander the earth in despair… Listen to me, Scrooge. If you don’t change, you will become a prisoner
like me… When you fall asleep, you will be visited by three spirits… The first one will arrive tomorrow at
midnight. The second one will arrive the day after at the same hour. The third one will arrive on the third
night with the last sounds of the bells.
MARLEY: ¡Nada de eso sirvió! ¡Me aproveché de la gente! ¡Nunca amé a nadie! Ahora tengo que
caminar por la tierra desesperado… Escúchame, Scrooge. Si no cambias, te volverás un prisionero
como yo…. Cuando te duermas, serás visitado por tres espíritus. El primero llegará mañana a la
medianoche. El segundo llegará el día después a la misma hora. El tercero llegará a la tercera noche
con los últimos sonidos de las campanas.
SCROOGE: B… but…. How…
SCROOGE: P… pero… cómo…
MARLEY: Goodbye, Scrooge.
MARLEY: Adiós, Scrooge.
El Espíritu de Marley Sale de pantalla. Scrooge alista su cama, su despertador, y se acuesta.
El reloj avanza rápidamente hasta las once de la noche del día siguiente. Suena el despertador.
Scrooge se despierta, lo desactiva y lo observa.
SCROOGE: What?! I slept a whole day?
Se echa, molesto en la cama. El reloj avanza diez minutos (11:10)
SCROOGE: WHAT?!
El reloj avanza otros diez minutos.
SCROOGE: It must be broken…
Le da un golpe. Avanzan otros diez minutos (11:20)
SCROOGE: What a piece of garbage!
Le da otro golpe. Avanzan otros diez minutos (11:30)
SCROOGE: NO!
Otro golpe (11:40)
SCROOGE: Yes, it must be broken…
Se vuelve a echar. Silencio largo. Ronca. Oscuro.
El reloj marca las 11:50 y, segundos después, las 12:00.
SCROOGE: I should go to work…
Se encienden las luces y, al lado de su cama, está sentado el ESPÍRITU DE LAS NAVIDADES
PASADAS. SCROOGE pega un grito y se demora unos segundos en recuperarse.
SCROOGE: Who are you?!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: I am the Spirit of Christmas Past…
SCROOGE: You don’t look like a-
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Get out of bed.
SCROOGE: NO!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: As you wish.
Aplaude dos veces. Entran dos FANTASMAS ACOMODADORES con máscaras, que hacen venia al
Espíritu, lo sientan en la sábana y lo arrastran fuera de escena.
SCROOGE: Get your dirty hands off me!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: You asked for it.
Salen caminando. Oscuro.
NARRADOR: The spirit went back in time with Scrooge to a town. At first, Scrooge didn’t recognize it,
but slowly, he started to remember the houses, the church, the river, the bridge and all the people.
Luz. Unos niños juegan a la lleva. Entran Scrooge y el espíritu.
SCROOGE: I remember those two… Those are the Alpert Twins! And the two girls are Nancy and
Claudette!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: They can’t see or hear you. They are ghosts from the past. Do you recognize that
little boy seating all alone?
Se enciende una luz sobre una sombra.
SCROOGE: Yeah, that’s me… I was a lonely kid. Even at home, because my parents used to work all
day…
Silencio largo.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Come with me, we don’t have much time.
SCROOGE: No! I have seen enough! Don’t torture me!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Don’t blame me. As I told you, those are the ghosts from your past.
SCROOGE: Take me back!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Just a last stop.
SCROOGE: No!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: As you wish.
Dos de los niños se ponen unas máscaras y vuelven a ser los FANTASMAS ACOMODADORES:
SCROOGE: You two again?! No! No! NOOO!
Se lo llevan a rastras. Oscuro.
NARRADOR: And they appeared in a garden. There, there was a beautiful lady crying…
Luz. En medio del escenario, una MUCHACHA llora.
SCROOGE: Is that my niece, Elizabeth?
MUCHACHA (al vacío): I can’t marry you, Ebenezer Scrooge. There’s something you love way more
than me.
SCROOGE: Yes…
MUCHACHA: You love money. You love it more than anything in the world. And, when you say there’s
nothing wrong with it, you’re lying to me and to yourself! (pausa) When we first committed we were poor
and happy. I wish you well in your life, but we can’t see each other anymore…
SCROOGE: Mary, wait I have something to…
De repente, la Muchacha envejece (su pelo se vuelve canoso) y una niña llega a su encuentro.
NIÑA: Could you please tie me this ribbon, grandma?
La Anciana le ayuda a atar una cinta en su cabeza.
SCROOGE: Is that her granddaughter?
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Yes, but it could have been yours…
NIÑA: Grandpa!
MUCHACHA (ANCIANA): Wait for me, Darling…
La niña sale corriendo y la Muchacha (anciana) sale detrás de ella. Silencio.
SCROOGE: Take me out of here.
Oscuro. Se oye cómo Scrooge se despierta.
SCROOGE: Thank God it was a dream!
ESPÍRITU DE LA NAVIDAD PRESENTE: No, Ebenezer Scrooge. It was not a dream.
SCROOGE: I guess you’re the spirit of Christmas present.
ESPÍRITU PRESENTE: Yes, I am. Take my robe and hurry up. I have a lot to show you.
Scrooge toca la bata del espíritu. Oscuro.
NARRADOR: The bedroom disappeared and Scrooge found himself on a busy and snowy street.
Luz. La gente atraviesa, feliz, la calle, y cada vez que dos personas se encuentran, se dicen alegres
“Merry Christmas!”
SCROOGE: They all seem so happy…
NARRADOR: They are very happy. It’s Christmas. What did you expect?
SCROOGE: Just because it is December 25?
ESPÍRITU PRESENTE: Yes. Today, they can leave their problems aside and enjoy their families, the
food on their tables, and many other blessings.
ESCENA 3
El reloj avanza rápidamente hasta las once de la noche del día siguiente. Suena el despertador.
Scrooge se despierta, lo desactiva y lo observa.
SCROOGE: What?! I slept a whole day?
SCROOGE: ¿Qué? ¿Dormí todo un día?
Se echa, molesto en la cama. El reloj avanza diez minutos (11:10)
SCROOGE: WHAT?!
SCROOGE: ¿QUÉ?
El reloj avanza otros diez minutos.
SCROOGE: It must be broken…
SCROOGE: Debe estar dañado...
Le da un golpe. Avanzan otros diez minutos (11:20)
SCROOGE: What a piece of garbage!

Le da otro golpe. Avanzan otros diez minutos (11:30)
SCROOGE: NO!

Se vuelve a echar. Silencio largo. Ronca. Oscuro.
El reloj marca las 11:50 y, segundos después, las 12:00.
SCROOGE: I should go to work…
SCROOGE: Debería ir a trabajar.
Se encienden las luces y, al lado de su cama, está sentado el ESPÍRITU DE LAS NAVIDADES
PASADAS. SCROOGE pega un grito y se demora unos segundos en recuperarse.
SCROOGE: Who are you?!
SCROOGE: ¿Quién eres?
ESPÍRITU PASADO: I am the Spirit of Christmas Past…
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Soy el espíritu de las navidades pasadas…
SCROOGE: You don’t look like a-
SCROOGE: No pareces un-
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Get out of bed.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Sal de la cama.
SCROOGE: NO!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: As you wish.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Como desees.
Aplaude dos veces. Entran dos FANTASMAS ACOMODADORES con máscaras, que hacen venia al
Espíritu, sientan en la sábana a Scrooge y lo arrastran fuera de escena.
SCROOGE: Get your dirty hands off me!
SCROOGE: ¡Quítenme sus sucias manos de encima!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: You asked for it.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Tú lo pediste.
Salen caminando. Oscuro.

ESCENA 4
NARRADOR: The spirit went back in time with Scrooge to a town. At first, Scrooge didn’t recognize it,
but slowly, he started to remember the houses, the church, the river, the bridge and all the people.
NARRADOR: El espíritu volvió en el tiempo con Scrooge a un pueblo. Al principio, Scrooge no lo
reconoció, pero, lentamente, empezó a recordar las casas, la iglesia, el río, el puente y a la gente.
Luz. Unos niños juegan a la lleva. Entran Scrooge y el espíritu.
SCROOGE: I remember those two… Those are the Alpert Twins! And the two girls are Nancy and
Claudette!
SCROOGE: Recuerdo a esos dos… ¡Son los gemelos Alpert! ¡Y esas dos niñas son Nancy y
Claudette!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: They can’t see or hear you. They are ghosts from the past. Do you recognize that
little boy seating all alone?
ESPÍRITU PASADO: No pueden verte o escucharte. Son fantasmas de tu pasado. ¿Reconoces a aquel
pequeño niño sentado solo?
Se enciende una luz sobre una sombra.
SCROOGE: Yeah, that’s me… I was a lonely kid. Even at home, because my parents used to work all

SCROOGE: Sí, soy yo… Yo era un niño solitario. Incluso en casa, porque mis papás solían trabajar
todo el día…
Silencio largo.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Come with me, we don’t have much time.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Ven conmigo, no tenemos mucho tiempo.
SCROOGE: No! I have seen enough! Don’t torture me!
SCROOGE: ¡No! ¡He visto suficiente! ¡No me tortures!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Don’t blame me. As I told you, those are the ghosts from your past.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: No me culpes. Como te dije, esos son fantasmas de tu pasado.
SCROOGE: Take me back!
SCROOGE: ¡Llévame de vuelta!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Just a last stop.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Solo una última parada.
SCROOGE: No!
ESPÍRITU PASADO: As you wish.
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Como desees.
Dos de los niños se ponen unas máscaras y vuelven a ser los FANTASMAS ACOMODADORES:
SCROOGE: You two again?! No! No! NOOO!
SCROOGE: ¿Ustedes dos de nuevo? ¡No! ¡No! ¡Noooo!
Se lo llevan a rastras. Oscuro.

ESCENA 5
NARRADOR: And they appeared in a garden. There, there was a beautiful lady crying…
NARRADOR: Y aparecieron en un bello jardín. Allí, una hermosa jovencita lloraba…
Luz. En medio del escenario, una MUCHACHA llora.
SCROOGE: Is that…?
SCROOGE: ¿Esa es…?
MUCHACHA (al vacío): I can’t marry you, Ebenezer Scrooge. There’s something you love way more
than me.
MUCHACHA: No puedo casarme contigo, Ebenezer Scrooge. Hay algo que amas mucho más que a
mí.
SCROOGE: Yes… It is her…
SCROOGE: Sí… Es ella…
MUCHACHA: You love money. You love it more than anything in the world. And, when you say there’s
nothing wrong with it, you’re lying to me and to yourself! (pausa) When we first committed, we were
poor and happy. I wish you well in your life, but we can’t see each other anymore…
MUCHACHA: Amas el dinero. Lo amas más que a nada en el mundo. Y, cuando dices que no hay nada
de malo con eso, me mientes y te mientes. Cuando nos comprometimos, éramos pobres y felices. Te
deseo bien en tu vida, pero no podemos seguir viéndonos…
SCROOGE: Mary, wait, I have something to…
SCROOGE: Mary, espera, tengo que decirte…
De repente, la Muchacha envejece y una niña llega a su encuentro.
NIÑA: Could you please tie me this ribbon, grandma?
NIÑA: ¿Podrías atarme esta cinta, abuela?
La Anciana le ayuda a atar una cinta en su cabeza.
SCROOGE: Is that her granddaughter?
SCROOGE: ¿Esa es su nieta?
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Yes, but it could have been yours…
ESPÍRITU PASADO: Sí, pero podría haber sido la tuya…
NIÑA: Grandpa!
NIÑA: ¡Abuelo!
MUCHACHA (ANCIANA): Wait for me, Darling…
MUCHACHA (ANCIANA): Espérame, dulzura…
La niña sale corriendo y la Muchacha (anciana) sale detrás de ella. Silencio.
SCROOGE: Take me out of here.
SCROOGE: Sácame de aquí.
Oscuro. Se oye cómo Scrooge se despierta.
SCROOGE: Thank God it was a dream!
SCROOGE: ¡Gracias a Dios fue un sueño!
