Exercise: Interpreting in Cardiology

Good morning, Mrs. Pacheco. My name is Dr. Summers, a cardiologist. Nice to meet
you! Unfortunately, we are running a little behind so I apologize for the extended wait.

I understand you haven’t been feeling like yourself lately. Tell me, what’s bothering
you? (T3)

Sí, fíjese doctor que siento que me quedo sin aliento cuando camino. Hay momentos
donde miro todo nublado y me dan vahídos. Hace unos días iba para la tienda a
comprar unas roscas para el desayuno y casi me caigo en la calle. (T4)

Oh, no. That’s not good. How long has this been going on? (T5)

Bueno, desde que regresé de Costa Rica. Me fui a dar una vuelta por que una de mis
hijas se casó con un finquero. Y viera usted que ¡hasta pasaje en primera clase me

Well, we’re definitely going to run some tests to examine your heart and coronary
arteries more thoroughly, Mrs. Pacheco. (T19)

Dr. Roberts already sent us your EKG, so we don’t need to do that. An echocardiogram
can be done here today fairly quickly; however, we are going to need a stress test. And
that does take a bit more time because we have to make you exercise. (T23)

me iban a inyectar algo para hacer que el corazón me caminara más rápido, porque yo

dobutamine-atropine to make your heart beat a little harder and faster. While you are
on this medication, we will take images of your heart using an ultrasound. (T25)

Well, we need to determine if there’s adequate blood flow to your heart and coronary
arteries. It also helps us to identify any abnormal heart rhythms, among other things.

It’s important that you lose some weight, Mrs. Pacheco. Although right now much of
your weight may be due to fluid retention, you need to reduce some of your body fat as
well. If you lost some weight and had your levels of fluid under control, it’d be easier
on your legs and heart. (T33)

tomando unas pastillas que dis que pa’ adelgazar que me trajeron de Tijuana, pero me

Well, you shouldn’t be taking anything that your doctor has not prescribed to you. If
you’d like to take something else, you’d better consult with your doctor first. Many of
these alternative drugs interact with your current medications and they can cause
other problems. (T35)

¿Ah, sí? No sabía. ¡Pues, ya tiré esas porquerías porque me estaban enfermando más y
ni una sola libra que perdí! ¿Y usted por qué no me receta algo, pues, doctor? Unas
pastillas, o un tecito, o algo para adelgazar, ¿qué sé yo? (T36)

Well, let’s try it this way first. I’m going to put you on diuretics, which is basically a
water pill. That medication is going to help you get rid of the excess fluid. You should
also limit yourself to no more than 2,000 milligrams of sodium per day. (T37)

Oh, no, Mrs. Pacheco! Sodium means salt. What I mean is that your salt intake should
