nacionalista, antirracista y antiimperialista.
Hi, I'm Nelson Mandela, a South African activist and politician who led the movements
against apartheid and who, after a long struggle and 27 years in prison, presided over
the first government in 1994 that put an end to the racist regime. I am the son of a
tribal chief, I was given the name Rolihlahla, which means troublesome, but at the age
of seven, in order that I might attend Methodist school, I was baptized Nelson in the
Transkei church; Already famous, my countrymen would call me Madiba, after his clan
name. Two years later, due to the death of my father, I was left in the care of a cousin,
the great chief Jongintaba; with him that I become fond of listening to tribal chiefs and
become aware of the sense of justice. At the age of sixteen, join the tribal council;
Three years later, in 1937, he entered the Ford Hare boarding school for blacks for
higher education.
Sisulu immediately grasped my innate leadership skills and introduced me to the
African National Congress (ANC), a movement to fight the oppression black South
Africans had suffered for decades. In 1944, I was one of the founding leaders of the
Congress Youth League, which would become the dominant group in the African
National Congress; my ideology was an African socialism: nationalist, anti-racist and
anti-imperialist.
The stature of the African leader was made clear once again when, in the face of the opinion of
the African National Congress, he endorsed the conclusions of the report, which pointed out
not only the abuses and crimes of the segregationist regime, but also those committed by the
various groups of the movements of liberation, including the African National Congress.
Despite his withdrawal, the fervor that Mandela aroused in his compatriots remained alive: in
2010 he was present at the World Cup ceremonies in South Africa, and received the warm
support of the crowd; In July 2013, with the leader seriously ill, the South African population
took to the streets to celebrate his 95th birthday.
