1. Conjugaciones
The first thing we must know is that all verbs in Spanish are divided into three groups
(conjugaciones).
These are easily recognized according to their suffix.
-AR -ER -IR
CantAR CorrER DormIR
BailAR ComER ReIR
HablAR BebER EscribIR
¡!!!! BUT there are some verbs of the third conjugation which form the present with
another rule: pedir (pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedis, piden) , competir (compito, compites,
compite, competimos, competis, compiten) and reír (rio, ries, rie, reimos, reis, rien).
Person Reir (laugh) Competir (compete) Pedir (ask for)
Yo rí- o compit – o Pid – o
Tú rí- es compit – es Pid – es
Él/ella/usted rí- e compit – e Pid – e
Nosotros/ Nosotras re- imos compet – imos Ped – imos
Vosotros/vosotras re- ís compet – ís Ped – ís
Ellos/ellas/ustedes rí- en compit – en Pid – en
2. if the root has an -I, this change to -ie (adquirir is the only verb with this rule)
Yo adquiero
Tú adquieres
Él/ella/ usted adquiere
Nosotros/as adquirimos
Vosostros/as adquiris
Ellos/ ellas/ ustedes adquieren
3. if the root has an -o ---- -ue
Person AR - Encontrar (to ER – poder (be able IR -Dormir
find) to)
Yo encuentr- o pued – o Duerm– o
Tú encuentr- as pued – es Duerm – es
Él/ella/usted encuentr- a pued – e Duerm – e
Nosotros/ Nosotras encontr- amos pod – emos Dorm – imos
Vosotros/vosotras encontr- áis pod – éis Dorm – ís
Ellos/ellas/ustedes encuentr- an pued– en Duerm – en
As a way of summarizing:
