Por lo general, es una preposición y, a veces, una conjunción
para : propósito
Usamos for para hablar de un propósito o una razón para algo:
I’m going for some breakfast. I’m really hungry.
She leaves on Friday for a 15-day cruise around the Mediterranean.
I wear these old trousers for painting.
En las preguntas, a menudo usamos qué... para en lugar de por qué para preguntar sobre
la razón o el propósito de algo, especialmente en situaciones informales:
What are you here for?
What are they doing it for?

A menudo usamos for para presentar a la persona o personas que reciben algo:
She bought a teapot for her sister.
Mike Cranham and his staff at the hotel cook for 800 people a day, on average.

Usamos for con un período de tiempo para referirnos a la duración (cuánto dura algo):
There’s a lovely open-air pool near us. We usually go there for a couple of hours in the
evenings when it’s warm enough.
Después de un negativo podemos usar for y in con el mismo significado. In es
particularmente común en inglés americano:
I haven’t seen him in five years. (or for five years.)

Usamos for para referirnos a un intercambio:

por significado porque
A veces usamos for como una conjunción que significa 'porque'. Lo usamos en contextos
muy formales, y a menudo literarios:
Chasing the white stag through the forests, never catching it, of course, for it is a creature
of legend.
For en verbos de varias palabras
A menudo combinamos for con un verbo para formar un verbo de varias palabras:
She’s been caring for her mother for years.
It’s not a good time to look for it now. We have to go.

De es una preposición.
Of comúnmente introduce frases preposicionales que son complementos de
sustantivos, creando el patrón: sustantivo + de + sustantivo. Este patrón es muy común,
sobre todo para indicar distintas partes, piezas, cantidades y grupos:
Lima is the capital of Peru.
Twenty-four-hour TV news makes sure we all know the main events of the day.

También usamos comúnmente como preposición después de diferentes adjetivos ( miedo
de , generoso de, orgulloso de ) y verbos ( aprobar , soñar con, pensar en ):
I never thought she could take a flight on her own at her age. I feel very proud of her.

Usamos la estructura determinante + de + sustantivo en expresiones de cantidad:
Most of the new workers in the country are from Turkey.
Some of my best friends are computer scientists.
Of es opcional con todos, ambos, la mitad excepto antes de que el objeto pronombre me,
you, it, him, her, us, them :
Both (of) the finance ministers have decided to resign.
All of them will be able to travel on the bus.

Con significado 'en el mismo lugar que'
Con significa 'en el mismo lugar que alguien o algo' o 'acompañando':
She arrived with her boyfriend.
I don’t like tea with milk.
There was a free phone with the car.
Con: reacciones y sentimientos
A menudo sigue adjetivos que se refieren a reacciones y sentimientos:
Are you happy with your music lessons?
The teacher got angry with them because they were behaving badly.
I’m delighted with this new jacket.
Con el significado de 'usar'
Usamos with para referirnos a lo que usamos para hacer algo:
They opened the package with a knife.
I’ll tie it with some tape to keep it closed.
He cleaned the table with a cloth he found in the kitchen.

Usamos with para significar 'tener' o 'poseer':
It’s the house with the really big gates.
She woke with terrible toothache.
The Commonwealth Institute used to be a building with a very unusual roof in
Kensington.
