Arbor Day
Trees are an important part of our lives and have been around for thousands of
years. Trees provide us with many benefits. They provide us with shade, which
protects us from the sun ’s powerful rays and helps us stay cool. They help clean the
air and give us the oxygen we need to live. They
provide homes for many animals around the world.
An additional benefit of trees is that they are very
pretty to look at, which can reduce stress. These
are just some of the reasons why it is important to
take care of the trees. Nevertheless, around 42
million trees are cut down each year around the
world. This is equivalent to 100 trees every minute!
Deforestation has many negative effects and contributes to pollution of the
environment.
A special day dedicated to trees is Arbor Day. Arbor Day encourages people to
care for trees and plant new ones. Arbor Day is celebrated in the United States on
the last Friday in April. However, in some states, it is celebrated on a different date
depending on their growing season. Julius Sterling Morton founded Arbor Day in 1872,
which became a state holiday in the state of Nebraska in 1885. More than a million
new trees were planted on the first Arbor day. Years later, in 1970, President Richard
Nixon declared Arbor Day to be a national holiday that would be celebrated every
year on the last Friday of April. Today, many people participate in
Arbor Day in the United States and in similar festivities
around the world. Every year, the Arbor Day Foundation
helps plant around 15 million trees. In addition, many
schools participate in educational programs to teach
students about tree conservation on Arbor Day. Aside
from planting trees, there are many ways you can
participate in the Arbor Day celebration. For example, you
can help protect trees by recycling, making a donation to
save the tropical rainforest or simply by educating others
about the importance of trees. These are things that can be
done not only on Arbor day, but all year long.
