En Hollywood está Laurel Canyon, uno de los barrios más carismáticos de Los Ángeles. La vida del cañón se alimenta por la arteria
de Laurel Canyon Boulevard, un importante corredor que comunica West Hollywood con San Fernando Valley. La mayoría de las
calles del cañón son fondos de saco que parten de este Laurel Canyon Boulevard lo que ha facilitado que la naturalidad de todo el
cañón quede muy preservada. Esta naturalidad mezclada con la inaccesibilidad fue lo que fomentó que en los años 60 fuera uno de
los centros de actividad contracultural de la época, y que en él tuvieran su casa, prestada casi siempre, muchos músicos y artistas.
En los 60 existían varias casas pagadas por las productoras de discos en donde vivían grupos musicales enteros con cuenta abierta
en los supermercados de comida orgánica. Contaba Ron Stone, manager entre otros de Joni Mitchell, que subiendo por Laurel Canyon
Boulevard podías oir, entrelazadas, una canción tras canción sonando desde los bungalows.
Pero el modo de vida bohemio de Laurel Canyon acabó bruscamente con el asesinato en 1969 de la mujer de Roman Polansky, Sharon
Tate, en un cañón cercano, Benedict Canyon. Tras este macabro asesinato las casas y los modos de vida abiertos de una época se
cerraron de un portazo. Toda esa sociedad, y con ella la sociedad en general, se hizo más cerrada, más desconfiada. Ese espíritu de
libertad se diluyó y empezó tal vez entonces la compleja época actual.
Todo Laurel Canyon es absolutamente escarpado. La parcela en la que se sitúa esta casa es una de las de pendiente elevada, entre
el 50 y el 60%. Se accede a ella por la parte superior y la casa toma como cota más alta la de esta misma calle de acceso.

Hollywood's Laurel Canyon is one of LA's most charismatic neighbourhoods. Laurel Canyon Boulevard, a major transit corridor between West
Hollywood and San Fernando Valley, is the canyon's lifeblood. Most of the streets in the Canyon are cul de sacs running off the Boulevard, which
has helped to maintain its extremely well-preserved natural environment.
This mixture of nature and inaccessibility made it one of the focal points of the 1960's counter-culture, and many leading musicians and artists of
the time lived here, most of them in borrowed homes.
In the 1960's, entire bands lived in homes paid for by record companies, with accounts at organic food supermarkets. Ron Stone, manager of Joni
Mitchell amongst others, remembers travelling up Laurel Canyon Boulevard and hearing song after song coming out of the houses, mixing in the air.
Laurel Canyon's bohemian lifestyle ended abruptly in 1969 when Roman Polanski's wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered in a nearby ravine, Benedict
Canyon. The door was suddenly shut on the era's open lifestyle and its homes as a result of this gruesome event. That society, and indeed soci-
ety in general as well, became more closed, more suspicious. That spirit of freedom was watered down and perhaps marked the start of today's
complex era.
The entire Laurel Canyon is quite abrupt, and the allotment for this particular house is one of the steepest, on a 50-60% angle. The entrance is from
above, with the top level of the house coinciding with the roadway.

La necesidad automovilística de Los Ángeles provoca que el aparcamiento sea una prioridad en el programa, algo que acentuamos
permitiendo que los coches aparquen directamente sobre la cubierta de la vivienda, siendo el único elemento presente hacia la calle.
Toda esta cubierta —zona de aparcamiento incluida— será una terraza-jardín, con árboles que asoman a ella tras atravesar toda la
casa, y con enredaderas —plantadas en grandes jardineras insertadas en la cubierta— que protegen la zona de coches y la zona de
estar, excavada ésta en 'trinchera'. Aquí se podrá comer en una mesa fija enrasada con la cubierta, o simplemente estar y contem-
plar las fantásticas vistas.
The need for cars in Los Angeles made parking a priority in the brief, which we emphasize by allowing vehicles to drive directly onto the roof, the
only component facing the street. All of this deck, including part of the car park, will be a terrace garden, with trees emerging from it after rising through
the whole house and creepers growing in large planters embedded in the roof to shelter the parking zone and the living area, which is dug out in a
'trench' to allow the owners to dine at a table set flush with the deck, or just sit and enjoy the fantastic views.

La casa, colocada abajo e invisible desde la calle de acceso, intenta abrirse lo máximo posible a las vistas que dan a la otra falda de
Laurel Canyon y a las vistas de una gran parte del Downtown de la ciudad. Pero como se pierde la parte de poniente de toda la ciu-
dad —la parte del océano, tapada por su propia loma— decidimos conectar la casa con una pequeña parcela inconstruible, locali-
zada en medio de Hollywood, en donde colocamos un satélite con ojos para que nos transmita continuamente todo aquello que la
casa se pierde. Es el satélite que transmite la cara oculta de la luna, el que permite tener desde la casa las vistas a su espalda.
La cara inferior de la casa es la única fachada real que tiene, porque se ve continuamente desde Laurel Canyon Boulevard, la única
calle realmente transitada de la zona. Por ello, esta fachada la tratamos con el espíritu de la zona con diferentes tipos de materiales
reciclados —nada perfecto, nada terminado— que pintamos en un mismo color.
En cierto momento nos preguntamos qué queda de la antigua bohemia de Laurel Canyon, y reconocemos que algo hay, alguna remi-
niscencia, algo en el aire, y es esto lo que dejamos que atraviese la casa por todos sus extremos.

The house itself, set low and invisible from the entrance roadway, makes the most of these views towards the opposite side of Laurel Canyon and
a large part of downtown LA, but misses the western (Pacific Ocean) side of the city, hidden by the spur- obscured by its own hill. We therefore
decided to link the house to a small unbuildable lot in the middle of Hollywood, where we installed a satellite with 'eyes' to permit non-stop stream-
ing of the views that the house is missing. This satellite transmits the dark side of the moon— looking behind our backs from inside the house.
The underside of the house is its only real facade, because it can be seen continuously from Laurel Canyon Boulevard, the only really busy street
in the area, which is why we treat it in the local spirit, with different types of recycled material— nothing perfect, nothing finished, all painted the
same colour.
At one point we asked ourselves whether anything was really left of the old bohemian Laurel Canyon. We realised that something intangible is still
there, something in the air, a reminiscence, which is what we let flow through the house, from one end to the other.

Aruba es una isla del Caribe perteneciente al Reino de Los Países Bajos con gobierno propio. Es una isla que no tiene ninguna nece-
sidad de arquitectura, porque su riqueza reside tanto en mantener la sensación de reserva natural como en su mar dulce, así que lo
peor que le puede pasar a esta isla, como a la mayoría, es que la típica bazofia urbana llena de vidrio acabe campando, como en cual-
quier otra parte, destruyendo el dominio de la naturaleza que todavía impera en la isla. Para ello la decisión que tomamos, porque
nos parece la más inocua, es la de construir con los materiales propios de los que dispone la isla. Pero allí no hay ninguna fábrica
de material. No hay vidrio, no hay hormigón; ni siquiera ladrillo, no hay madera. Sin embargo, allí se da una temperatura mínima anual
de 24º, y un sol presente más de 340 días al año, con una inclinación nunca menor de 54º. Y aunque con escasa lluvia anual se man-
tiene una humedad constante. El viento, persistente, rara vez baja de 30 km/h. Todo esto provoca una naturaleza específica, tendida,
horizontal y densa, que se protege mutuamente, y que protege a las raíces y al suelo del sol. Estar bajo el sol es siempre insoporta-
ble, incluso en invierno, pero en cambio, a la sombra, la temperatura, gracias a esa continua brisa, resulta muy agradable. Ya desde
el primer viaje a la isla decidimos trabajar con la conjunción de esos dos elementos, sombra/brisa —unos elementos que han per-
dido protagonismo por la profusión del aire acondicionado. ("AC Nightmare")
Decidimos convertir la totalidad de las dos plazas propuestas en el encargo y situadas en el centro de Oranjestad en un gran umbrá-
culo, una gran matriz o un gran estómago, cubierto de plantas que crecen todo el año. Ahora mismo son sólo dos plazas en las que
únicamente hay sol, coches y yonkis. Nadie más las ocupa, porque no apetece ocuparlas, y porque no hay espacio libre que ocupar.
El entorno urbano es en general de escala pequeña, casi todos los edificios tienen 2-3 alturas, y están pintados con esa gran varie-
dad de colores vivos tan típica del Caribe.
Nos parece una continua obligación, ya siempre permanente en todos nuestros proyectos, el recuperar un poco del desequilibrio de
la batalla perdida naturaleza/construcción, intentando mezclar ambas, y que el espacio urbano vuelva a ser ocupado por una mayo-
ría de algo, un algo más en relación con la naturaleza.

Aruba is a Caribbean island, part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands but with a government of its own. It is an island that has no need for architec-
ture because its wealth resides in its sense of a nature reserve and its sweet sea. The worst that could be done to this island, as is the case of most
others, would be to flood it with the typical urban nonsense, full of glass, and to destroy the natural dominion that still prevails on this island. Our
decision, because it seemed to be the most innocuous option, was therefore to use the building materials available on the island. The problem is
that it has no factories for building materials: no glass, no concrete, not even brick or timber. However, the average minimum annual temperature is
24º, the sun shines on more than 340 days a year, with an inclination never less than 54 º, and despite the low annual rainfall, the humidity is con-
stant. The persistent wind is rarely slower than 30 km/h. All this has given rise to a specific type of nature vegetation —prostrate, horizontal and dense—
which provides mutual protection and shelters the roots and the soil from the sun. It is always unbearable to stay out in the sun, even in winter, but
on the other hand, in the shade, the temperature is extremely pleasant thanks to the constant breeze. On our very first trip to the island, we decided
to work with the conjunction of these two elements, shade/breeze, elements that have lost their former prominence due to the profusion of air con-
ditioning (the 'AC Nightmare').
We decided to convert the entire space of the two squares proposed in the brief, located in the heart of Oranjestad, into a large-scale shade house,
a huge matrix or stomach covered with perennial plants. Right now they are just two squares occupied by sun, cars and junkies. No one else uses
them, because they don't want to occupy them, and also because there is no space to left occupy.
The urban environment here is generally small-scale. Almost all the buildings have no more than two or three storeys, painted in a wide range of
bright colours, so typical of the Caribbean.
We consider it an ongoing obligation, ever-present in all our projects, to recover a bit of the imbalance innate to the lost battle between nature
and construction, trying to mix the two and let that city space be occupied once again by a majority of something— something that is more closely
related to nature.

Debajo del umbráculo cubierto se cobijan elementos de un programa muy urbano: una gran pista de skate —dividida en dos bowls y
una parte de street—, un edificio de oficinas, un restaurante y un aparcamiento subterráneo. Toda esta 'urbanidad' se envuelve con
una mega pérgola conformando un gran jardín en el que se busca que apetezca estar a cualquier hora del día, y de la noche, porque
por la noche toda la pérgola se llena de puntitos de LED que van mezclados entre las plantas —a modo del Tunnel of Lights de
Nagano, Japón— y permiten poder seguir usando todo el espacio en el momento más fresco del día.
El gran umbráculo se realiza con una estructura unidireccional N-S para marcar más claramente el movimiento del sol y conseguir refe-
rencias continuas a las distintas horas del día. Es, sin duda, el proyecto más fenomenológico que hemos hecho nunca, o tal vez sea el
único verdaderamente tal. Basta estar debajo de él y disfrutar de sus sombras para que su razón de ser se cumpla enteramente.

Aspects of a very urban nature are sheltered in the shade house: a big skate park divided into two bowls and a street plaza, an office building, a
restaurant and underground parking. All this 'urbanity' is enveloped by a mega-pergola that shapes a large garden that we want people to enjoy at
any time of the day or night. At night, the whole pergola is full of LED dots that intermingle with the plants —in the manner of the Tunnel of Lights in
Nagano, Japan—, encouraging the whole space to be used at the coolest time of the day.
The large shade house is constructed with a unidirectional N-S structure to highlight the sun's movement and produce constant references to the
changing time of day. Without a doubt, this is the most phenomenological project we have ever designed, or perhaps the only real one. One just
has to stand below it and enjoy the shade to realise that its raison d'etre is entirely fulfilled.

Las dos grandes cubiertas se diferencian únicamente por su color y por las plantas trepadoras que las cubren, que son las que le
otorgan ese color a la estructura camuflada entre las flores. Una es color Buganvilla (fucsia), y la otra color Senecio Confusus (naranja).
Las dos trepadoras tienen floración continua en Aruba, y aparte del diferente color generan una cubrición muy distinta del plano del
suelo de la plaza debido al manto de hojas secas y flores caídas sobre él, tan distinto en una y otra. La buganvilla tiene una flor de
color fucsia de tamaño medio, con floración continua y muy renovada, no tiene olor y la vibración de sus flores por el viento es de 6
en la escala briter... La otra tiene una flor pequeña, olorosa, de larga duración y poca renovación, y con una vibración de sus flores
por el viento de 4 en la escala briter.
En un malogrado proyecto anterior de 20 viviendas sociales en Vallecas que cubríamos por plantas decíamos que el único material
que nos interesaba eran esas plantas —tanto que nos echaron a mitad de obra por nuestra negativa a eliminar esas plantas del pro-
yecto—. En este proyecto el único material que nos interesa no son las plantas en sí, sino la micro-climatología que generan en toda
la parte inferior, sus efectos colaterales, las diferentes sensaciones alejadas de hechos habituales que provocarán, tanto en todo indi-
viduo que lo explore como en un amplio alrededor.

The two large roofs only differ in their colour and the type of creeper, which is what gives the structure its colour, camouflaged amongst the leaves
and flowers. One is in a Bougainvillea colour (purple), and the other has the colour of Senecio confusus (orange). In Aruba, both types of creeper
are in constant bloom. Apart from their colour, each one generates a quite distinct type of ceiling for the square with their layers of fallen leaves and
flowers. The bougainvillea has average sized purple flowers in constant, high-frequency bloom. It has no scent, and the vibration of these flowers in
the wind eaches 6 on the 'bright scale'... Senecio, on the other hand, has small, fragrant, long-lasting flowers that are renewed at longer intervals,
and vibrate in the wind at a rate of 4 on the bright scale.
In an earlier ill-fated project for 20 social dwellings in Madrid's Vallecas district, we planned to cover the homes with plants, which we explained were
the only material we were interested in— so much so that we were dismissed halfway through the works when we refused to remove those plants
from the project. In this project, the only material that interests us are not so much the plants themselves as the microclimate generated beneath
them, their side effects, the range of sensations they stimulate —so different from the mundane world— in every individual who explores this space
and indeed a large area around it.

El Rooftop Café se encuentra en el barrio de Southwark. Está situado en lo alto de un edificio de los años 60, justo enfrente de la
salida de la estación de Tren de London Bridge, y entre los dos nuevos edificios proyectados por Renzo Piano conocidos como The
Shard. El actual Rooftop Café es un pequeño restaurante diseñado por el artista español Dr. Cató y dirigido por el chef australiano
Magnus Reid, ambos jóvenes talentos de la ciudad de Londres. El rápido éxito del pequeño local llevó al propietario a querer ampliarlo
hacia la terraza adyacente, algo que en Londres, por su conocido clima, no resulta de fácil uso. Esta terraza tiene unas bellas vistas
lejanas de todo el sur de Londres y una muy cercana sobre esta nueva obra estrella de la arquitectura londinense.
Para ampliar el restaurante en la terraza es obligatorio operar con una estructura ligera, desmontable y como siempre muy barata.
Por ello propusimos al cliente emplear perfiles y estructuras existentes de invernaderos convencionales —tema con en el que hemos
trabajado ya en varios proyectos y que tenemos bastante controlado—.
Elegimos una cubierta curva —del catálogo de la firma Inverca— que se abre desde los laterales hacia el centro, dejando éste libre.
Esta cubierta se repite en ambos laterales, y como cada paño se puede abrir con un motor independiente permite 36 posibles varia-
ciones del invernadero, pudiendo estar los laterales abiertos mientras llueve, o el techo completamente abierto los días dulces de sol.

The Rooftop Café is in Southwark, London, on top of a 1960's building, right opposite the exit from London Bridge station and between the two new
buildings known as The Shard, designed by Renzo Piano. The current Rooftop Café is a small restaurant designed by Spanish artist Dr. Cato and
managed by Australian chef Magnus Reid, both young talents in London. The rapid success of this small venue led the owner to want to expand
onto the adjacent terrace, a space that is not easy to use in London's renowned weather. The terrace has beautiful distant views of South London
and a close-up perspective of the city's latest architectural showpiece.
In order to get permission to expand onto the terrace, the restaurant can only install a lightweight, removable and, as always, very cheap structure.
Our proposal to the client was therefore to use shapes and structures found in conventional greenhouses— a theme we are quite familiar with, hav-
ing used it in several previous projects.
We chose a curved roof from the Inverca company catalogue, that opens from the sides towards the centre, which is left free. This roof is repeated
on both sides, and as each panel can be opened with an independent drive, 36 variations of the greenhouse are possible— the sides can be
opened even in the rain, and the roof can be left fully open on nice sunny days.

La situación al lado del rascacielos The Shard —algo que favorecerá obviamente el futuro negocio— complicó notablemente la estruc-
tura del pequeño pero esbelto invernadero (6 metros), debido a los fuertes vientos que allí se generan al chocar con la torre. Pero, aparte
de este obligado ajuste en las dimensiones de los elementos del invernadero, no hay diseño alguno. Lo único que se decidió trabajar es
la decoración interior, dejando limpia la parte baja, solamente ocupada por los comensales, la comida y un mobiliario de madera, dise-
ñado también por el artista Dr. Cató. Y, en cambio, ocupar la parte alta con una densa maraña de maceteros colgantes realizados con
todo tipo de material y procedencia —trozos de recipientes de plástico reciclados, embudos de hoja de lata, mallas de alambre, telas
de saco, etc—, sobre los que se plantan multitud de flores y vegetales, con distinto color y olor que, junto al mobiliario, será lo que real-
mente dará vida al invernadero, y será con lo que tendrá que jugar el magnífico cocinero Magnus para la preparación de sus platos.

The location alongside The Shard skyscraper —which will obviously benefit future business— considerably complicated the structure of the small
yet tall (6 metre) greenhouse on account of the strong winds that reach this point after they hit the tower. However, apart from this necessary adjust-
ment to the dimensions of the greenhouse components, there was no designing to be done whatsoever. The only thing we decided to work on was
the interior decoration, leaving the bottom part clear, only occupied by customers, food and wood furniture, also designed by the artist, Dr. Cató. In
contrast, the upper part is occupied by a dense mesh of hanging pot plants made from all sorts of material and sources: pieces of recycled plastic
containers, tin funnels, wire mesh, hessian sacks, etc. in which a multitude of flowers and vegetables are planted. Their masses of colours and smells
will, together with the furniture, be what really breathes life into the greenhouse, and they will also be the palette that the magnificent chef Magnus
Reid will avail himself of to create his dishes.

Esta casa se sitúa en Mount Washington, un barrio de las colinas del noreste de Los Angeles. La parcela se encuentra sobre una ele-
vada ladera con amplias vistas (de 180 grados) hacia el valle de San Fernando. Desde ella se ve el Downtown, las Colinas de Echo
Park, Silver Lake, Griffith Park y Hollywood, el río de Los Ángeles, tres Autopistas (5th, 2nd y 110th), el tren y el río de Los Ángeles
State Park. El valle de San Fernando es el verdadero centro histórico de la ciudad, porque por allí pasa el ahora llamado río de Los
Ángeles —aunque realmente se llamaba 'El Río del Pueblo de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles de Porciúncula', primer nombre de la
ciudad dado en 1781, en su fundación, por el gobernador español Felipe de Neve—.
La empinada parcela está orientada hacia el sur-oeste, lo que hace imprescindible proteger la casa del fuerte soleamiento. Por ello,
desde el principio, comenzamos a trabajar con estos dos claros condicionantes: primero, preservar y fomentar la vista horizontal de
180 grados y, segundo, proteger lo máximo la casa del continuo sol. A ellos dos se unió posteriormente un tercer condicionante: hacer
la casa no lo más barata posible sino a la mitad de precio de lo que supone la construcción habitual en LA, habitualmente muy cara.
Por esa razón todo el interior se planteó estricto y ajustado —tomando dimensiones y materiales del catálogo de Home Depot—,
haciéndolo todo muy simple y rectangular, y considerando en todo momento los costes de cada elemento y del material empleado.
Para potenciar las vistas proyectamos al exterior una gran terraza del mismo tamaño que el espacio interior, porque en Los Ángeles
como en todas las zonas de clima suave el exterior adquiere la misma relevancia que el interior— la gente vive a la vez fuera y den-
tro, sin distinción clara.

This house is located in Mount Washington, a suburb in the hills north-east of Los Angeles. The allotment is on a tall hill with sweeping 180º views
towards the San Fernando Valley. From here, one can see downtown LA, the Echo Park hills, Silver Lake, Griffith Park and Hollywood, the Los
Angeles River, three freeways (5th, 2nd and 110th), the railway line and the river running through Los Angeles State Park. San Fernando Valley is the
true city centre, because what is now the Los Angeles River runs through this point, although in fact it was originally called 'The River of the Town of
Our Lady of the Angels of Portiuncula' the initial name given to the city in 1781 when it was founded by Spanish Governor Felipe de Neve.
The steep plot faces south-west, making it necessary to shelter the house from the strong sunlight, which is why from the outset we started to work
with these two distinct factors: first, maintaining and encouraging sweeping 180º horizontal views, and second, maximising the home's protection
from the constant sun. A third factor was added later: not to build the house as cheaply as possible, but at half the usual price of construction in
LA, which is normally very expensive. For that reason, everything inside was planned strictly and tightly, taking the dimensions and materials from
the Home Depot catalogue, making everything very simple and rectangular, and at all times considering the cost of each element and the material
to be used.
To enhance the views, we designed a large outdoor terrace with the same size as the interior space: in Los Angeles, like everywhere with a mild cli-
mate, the exterior ultimately becomes just as important as the interior— people live outdoors and indoors, without any clear distinction.

Como herramienta independiente para proteger del sol y enmarcar las vistas, se proyecta al exterior una envolvente que recubre todo
el espacio interior y exterior. Esta cubrición, que es la que le impone su imagen a la casa, envuelve completamente los dos niveles de
la vivienda, la gran terraza y el garaje. En un principio se piensa realizar con tiras de distintas maderas recicladas y pintadas, si bien se

Tal vez, alguien ya nos lo ha dicho, haya un intento de asociación de ideas con la clásica y mejor arquitectura 'Angelina', llena de jue-
gos de horizontales con verticales. Pero en esta tierra sin agua en que todo crece abundan millones de plantas, resultando lo más bello
esa densidad de naturaleza que se consigue artificialmente. Sin duda hay un intento de que al final, plantas, palmeras, maderas, malla,
sombras y casa, la canaria, sean, simplemente, una misma cosa. Esa misma cosa densa y habitual.

Perhaps —someone has already mentioned the idea to us— this is an attempt to create an association of ideas with the best of classical Los Angeles
architecture, full of games between horizontals and verticals. In this land without water, where everything grows and there are millions of plants, the most
beautiful thing is that this dense nature is achieved artificially. It is undoubtedly also an attempt to ultimately make everything —the plants, the palm trees,
the wood, the shade slats, the shadows and the home, the Canary cage— simply the same thing. The same thing, dense and familiar.
