Measles
Overview

Measles is a childhood infection caused by

a virus. Once quite common, measles can
now almost always be prevented with a
vaccine.

Also called rubeola, measles can be

serious and even fatal for small children.
While death rates have been falling
worldwide as more children receive the
measles vaccine, the disease still kills
more than 100,000 people a year, most under the age of 5.

As a result of high vaccination rates in general, measles hasn't been widespread

in the United States for more than a decade. The United States averaged about
60 cases of measles a year from 2000 to 2010, but the average number of
cases jumped to 205 a year in recent years. Most of these cases originate
outside the country and occurred in people who were unvaccinated or who didn't
know whether or not they had been vaccinated.

Symptoms

Measles signs and symptoms appear around 10 to 14 days after exposure to the
virus. Signs and symptoms of measles typically include:

 Fever
 Dry cough
 Runny nose
 Sore throat
 Inflamed eyes (conjunctivitis)
 Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers on a red background found
inside the mouth on the inner lining of the cheek — also called Koplik's
spots
 A skin rash made up of large, flat blotches that often flow into one another
The infection occurs in sequential stages over a period of two to three weeks.

 Infection and incubation. For the first 10 to 14 days after you're infected,

the measles virus incubates. You have no signs or symptoms of measles
during this time.
 Nonspecific signs and symptoms. Measles typically begins with a mild
to moderate fever, often accompanied by a persistent cough, runny nose,
inflamed eyes (conjunctivitis) and sore throat. This relatively mild illness
may last two or three days.
 Acute illness and rash. The rash consists of small red spots, some of
which are slightly raised. Spots and bumps in tight clusters give the skin a
splotchy red appearance. The face breaks out first.
Over the next few days, the rash spreads down the arms and trunk, then
over the thighs, lower legs and feet. At the same time, the fever rises
sharply, often as high as 104 to 105.8 F (40 to 41 C). The measles rash
gradually recedes, fading first from the face and last from the thighs and
feet.

Communicable period. A person with measles can spread the virus to others
for about eight days, starting four days before the rash appears and ending
when the rash has been present for four days.

What Is Mumps?
Mumps is an infection caused by a virus. It can infect many parts of the body, but is best
known for causing swelling of the parotid glands. These glands, which make saliva (spit),
are in front of the ear, around the jaw.

Mumps used to be a common childhood illness in the United States, especially in kids 5 t
o 9 years old. It's much rarer now, thanks to the mumps vaccine.

What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Mumps?
Many kids have no symptoms, or very mild symptoms that feel like a cold. Those who do
get symptoms might:
have a fever
have a headache
lose their appetite
feel tired, achy, and generally unwell

Within a couple days, the parotid glands can swell and get painful. This makes the cheek
look puffy. The pain gets worse when the child swallows, talks, chews, or drinks acidic jui
ces (like orange juice). One or both parotid glands can swell. Sometimes one swells a fe
w days before the other.

Rarely, someone might get:

encephalitis or meningitis
orchitis (inflammation of the testicles)
oophoritis (inflammation of the ovaries)
pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
hearing loss

Is Mumps Contagious?
Mumps is contagious. It spreads in tiny drops of fluid when someone with the virus sneez
es, coughs, talks, or laughs. Contact with objects they use - like dirty tissues, straws, or d
rinking glasses - also can pass the virus. If they don't wash their hands, any surface they
touch can spread mumps to others who touch it.

Someone with mumps is most contagious from 2 days before symptoms start to 5 days a
fter they end. Anyone who is infected can pass the disease, even if they don't have symp
toms.

Who Gets Mumps?
Mumps happens most often in school-age kids and college students. Outbreaks are rare,
but can happen. An outbreak is when many people from one area come down with the s
ame disease. Experts are looking into why outbreaks still happen and ways to prevent th
em.
Most people who get mumps never get it again.

3) Consider these sentences from the text:

a) This makes the cheek look puffy.
b) The pain gets worse when the child swallows

¿A qué hacen referencia estas oraciones? Select the correct option:

A) Describing the CAUSES of an illness.

B) Describing the SYMPTOMS of an illness.
C) Explaining the ORIGIN of an illness.
4) ¿Qué conclusión podemos sacar? Para responder esta pregunta, completar:

Select the correct option.

Describing Causes of an illness—Describing Symptoms of an illness—Explaining the
Origin of an illness

gets

We use Present Simple for describing ____________________________. First, we use

the Subject, then the______+______ and then the Complement. For example, we say
“This makes the cheek look puffy” and “___________________________________”

5) Reorder the sentences using Present Simple

a) quickly-measles-spreads. Example: Measles spreads quickly.
b) makes-you feel tired-mumps. ____________________
c) begins-Measles-with fever. _____________________
d) of small red spots-consists-the rash. ____________________
e) occurs- when people are largely asymptomatic-transmission. ________________
PART C
1) Let’s go back to our previous classes, when we talked about POSSIBLE
SITUATIONS, GIVING ADVICE and SYMPTOMS of an illness and how to write
them in English. How did we form the sentences? ¿Cómo formamos las
oraciones?

Giving advice: _______________________________________________

Possible situations: __________________________________________

Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). HBV
is transmitted when blood, semen, or another body fluid from a person

infected with virus enters the body of someone who is not infected. This
can happen through sexual contact; sharing needles, syringes, or other

drug-injection equipment; or from mother to baby at birth. For some

people, hepatitis B is a short-term illness, but for others, it can become a

long-term, chronic infection. Risk for chronic infection is related to age at

infection: approximately 90% of infected infants become chronically

infected, compared with 2%–6% of adults. Chronic hepatitis B can lead to

serious health issues, like cirrhosis or liver cancer. The best way to prevent

hepatitis B is by getting vaccinated.

2) Ahora vamos a hacer el trabajo final sobre el tema “Enfermedades”. Van a

y pegar.
