Funcionamiento / Operation

en The Type 3 Surge Protection Device (SPD) is designed to protect voltage-sensitive equipment against transient voltage surges. A transient
voltage surge is caused by sudden changes in the power system due to lightning, capacitive or inductive switching, shorts, or faults.
When a voltage surge runs down the wiring from the power source, the SPD will clamp the Voltage Spike or Impulse to a safe voltage level
while bypassing excess energy away from the connected loads. This action protects all equipment that is plugged into the SPD as well as all
downstream loads wired to the SPD.If the voltage surge goes beyond the maximum capacity of the SPD (e.g., a near lightning strike) an alarm

RoHS on the SPD will sound and the “protected when lighted” LED will go out. The alarm warns that the SPD is no longer protecting against voltage
surges and a new unit must be installed. In the meantime, the SPD will continue to function as a normal receptacle. To turn off the alarm,
carefully move the alarm switch to the “Off” position.

Informarcíon General / General Information

es PRECAUCIÓN: ANTES DE EMPEZAR A TRABAJAR, LEA CUIDADOSAMENTE TODAS LAS
INSTRUCCIONES.
1. El dispositivo SPD sólo debe ser instalado, inspeccionado, mantenido y utilizado por un
electricista o persona calificada. Para garantizar el funcionamiento apropiado, el dispositivo SPD
debe instalarse y utilizarse de acuerdo con la norma NOM-001-SEDE.
2. Sólo utilice alambre de cobre con este dispositivo.
3. Un triángulo de color naranja en la cara del dispositivo identifica al dispositivo como con tierra
aislada con sistema doble de conexión a tierra.
4. No realizar el cableado según las instrucciones podría causar lesiones personales, daño a los
equipos o al dispositivo.
5. Este dispositivo no protegerá contra golpes directos de rayos.
6. Este dispositivo sólo está diseñado para instalarse en un (1) solo circuito derivado. No cablee
los dos tomacorrientes de este dispositivo en circuitos derivados separados.
7. Para unidades con alarma, si la alarma suena cuando se aplica por primera vez la energía
después de la instalación, revise en cuanto a las conexiones apropiadas de los cables y la
integridad del circuito de conexión a tierra.
8. Para unidades con alarma, asegúrese que el interruptor de alarma esta en la posición
"ALARMA”.
Diagnóstico – Esta unidad tiene una alarma audible junto con 2 bombillas LED (“Protegido
cuando está encendida” y “Conexión a tierra verificada” para proporcionar indicación de
problemas del cableado. La siguiente tabla muestra el estado de alarma/LED y los correspondien-
tes problemas del cableado:

1. The SPD should be installed, inspected, maintained, and operated by an electrician or qualified
person only. To guarantee proper operation, the SPD must be installed and used in accordance with
NE.C.® Article 310.
2. Use only copper wire with this device.
3. An orange triangle on the face of a device identifies the device as isolated ground with a dual
grounding system.
4. Failure to wire as instructed may cause personal injury, equipment damage, or device damage.
5. This device will not protect against direct lightning strikes.
6. This device is intended for single branch circuit installation only. Do not wire the two outlets of this
device into separate branch circuits.
7. For units with alarm, if the alarm sounds when power is first applied after installation, check for
proper wiring connections and integrity of the grounding circuit.
8. For units with alarm, make sure the alarm switch is in the “ALARM” position.
Diagnostics – This unit has an audible alarm along with 2 LEDs (“ProtectedWhen Lighted” and
“Ground Verified”) to provide indication of wiring problems. The following table shows alarm/LED
status and corresponding wiring problems:

 Instrucciones de Cableado / Wiring Instructions
es Advertencia: Antes de trabajar en el circuito, siempre verifique que la energía está “apagada”.
1. Coloque el cortacircuito en la posición Apagado (Off) o retire el fusible del circuito derivado en el cual
usted instalará el tomacorriente de protección contra sobrevoltajes transitorios (SPD). Siempre confirme
que la energía está “apagada” utilizando una lámpara de prueba. Si el tomacorriente SPD está
reemplazando un tomacorriente doble, verifique que la energía esté “apagada” en ambos tomacorrientes.
Si la energía todavía está encendida en un (1) tomacorriente, el tomacorriente está cableado de manera
dividida. Si usted desea instalar el tomacorriente protector contra sobrevoltajes transitorios en lugar de un
tomacorriente doble cableado de manera dividida, sólo puede conectarse una (1) de las líneas de
suministro al tomacorriente SPD. La otra línea de suministro debe aislarse con capuchón. Si DEBEN
utilizarse ambas líneas de suministro, el tomacorriente SPD NO PUEDE instalarse.
2. Conecte el alambre de tierra color verde o desnudo al tornillo de tierra de cabeza hexagonal color verde.
Los alambres de línea, negro y blanco, deben conectarse a los correspondientes tornillos negro y blanco.
(Vea la figura 1.)
Para conexiones traseras: Pele los alambres de terminal de acuerdo con el calibre de desforrado
mostrado en la parte trasera del dispositivo.
Para conexiones laterales: Pele aproximadamente 3/4” del alambre, enrolle cada alambre 3/4 de
vuelta, en sentido horario, debajo de las cabezas de los tornillos.
APRIETE LOS TORNILLOS DE TERMINAL y DE TIERRA CON UNA FUERZA DE APRIETE DE
1,58 Nm.
3. Instale la unidad en la caja de tomacorriente mediante los tornillos suministrados y fije una placa de
pared.
PRECAUCIÓN: TENGA CUIDADO QUE EL ALAMBRE DESNUDO DE TIERRA NO HAGA CONTACTO
CON LOS TERMINALES DE ENERGÍA O NEUTRO.
4. Para unidades con alarma, si la alarma suena cuando se aplica la energía, compruebe que las
conexiones de los cables sean correctas y la integridad del circuito de conexión a tierra.PROCEDIMIENTO
DE INSTALACIÓN EN CONSTRUCCIONES NUEVAS PARA PROPORCIONAR PROTECCIÓN PARA
UN CIRCUITO DERIVADO.
Nota: Vea las Figuras 1 y 2 para los pasos 1 al 6.
1. Conecte el alambre verde o desnudo al tornillo de cabeza hexagonal verde en el tomacorriente SDP.
2. Conecte el alambre blanco, procedente del panel de energía, al terminal blanco del tomacorriente SDP.
3. Conecte el alambre de color, procedente del panel de energía, al terminal negro del tomacorriente SDP.
4. Conecte el alambre de color, procedente del primer tomacorriente aguas abajo, al terminal negro del
tomacorriente protector contra sobrevoltajes transitorios.
5. Conecte el alambre blanco, procedente del primer tomacorriente aguas abajo, al terminal blanco del
tomacorriente protector contra sobrevoltajes transitorios.
NOTA: APRIETE LOS TORNILLOS DE TERMINAL y DE TIERRA CON UNA FUERZA DE APRIETE DE
1,58 Nm.
6. Para unidades con alarma, si la alarma suena cuando se aplica la energía, compruebe que las
conexiones de los cables sean correctas y la integridad del circuito de conexión a tierra.
en Warning: Always make sure power is “off” before working on the circuit.
1. Turn off circuit breaker or remove fuse for the branch circuit on which you will be installing the SPD
receptacle. Always confirm that power is “OFF” by using a test lamp. If the SPD receptacle is replacing
a duplex receptacle, verify power is “OFF” in both outlets. If power is still On in one outlet, the receptacle
is split-wired. If you want to install the surge suppressor receptacle in place of a split-wired duplex
receptacle, only one of the supply lines can be connected to the SPD receptacle.The other supply line
must be capped off. If both supply lines MUST be used, the SPD receptacle CANNOT be installed.
2. Connect the green or bare ground wire to the green hex head ground screw. Black and white line
wires should be connected to the corresponding black and white terminal screws.(See Figure 1.) For
back wiring: Strip terminal wires in accordance to the strip gage shown on the back of the device.
For side wiring: Strip approximately 3/4”of wire, wrap each wire 3/4 turn clockwise under heads of
screws.
TIGHTEN TERMINAL and GROUND SCREWS TO 1.58 Nm.
3. Install the unit in the outlet box with screws provided and attach a wallplate.
CAUTION: BE CAREFUL TO PROTECT BARE GROUND WIRE FROM CONTACTING HOT OR
NEUTRAL TERMINALS.
4. For units with alarm, if the alarm sounds when power is applied, check for proper wiring, and integrity
of the grounding circuit.
NEW CONSTRUCTION INSTALLATION PROCEDURE TO PROVIDE PROECTION FOR A BRANCH
CIRCUIT
Note: See Figures 1 and 2 for Steps 1 thru 6.
1. Connect the green or bare wire to the green hex head terminal screw on the SDP receptacle.
2. Connect the white wire from the power panel to the SDP white terminal.
3. Connect the colored wire from the power panel to the SPD black terminal.
4. Connect the colored wire from the first downstream receptacle to the surge suppressor black
terminal.
5. Connect the white wire from the first downstream receptacle to the surge suppressor white terminal.
NOTE: TIGHTEN TERMINAL and GROUND SCREWS TO 1.58 Nm.
6. For units with alarm, if the alarm sounds when power is applied, check for proper wiring and the
integrity of the grounding circuit.
