BODY SYSTEMS
ü Like all living things, we have three life processes: nutrition, interaction and reproduction. We use
different body systems for each of these processes.
ü Digestion takes place mainly in the small intestine, but some nutrients are digested in the mouth
and stomach.
ü Some things are not digested. Water, minerals and vitamins are small enough to pass into the blood
without being digested.
directamente.

Cuando la sangre los atraviesa, el exceso
de agua y de productos de desecho salen y
se transforman en orina.

ü Some body systems, like the circulatory system, function all the time, day and night.
ü The circulatory system is a transport system that takes blood to all parts
of the body.
ü It is made up of the heart and the blood vessels. The heart is a pump
and the blood vessels make a network that takes the blood around the
body.
ü The heart is a hollow muscle. It pumps blood around the body.
ü Each time it pumps is called a heartbeat. It usually beats 60 to 100 times a minute, but it can beat
much faster.
ü The more oxygen we need the faster our hearts beat. How does your heartbeat change when you
are sleeping? And when you are running? What about when you are calm? And when you are
scared?
Cuanto más oxígeno necesitamos más rápido nuestro corazón late. ¿Cómo cambia tu latido cuando estás dormido,
corriendo, en calma o asustado?

• Veins return the blood (with waste) back to the heart.
ü What do you think the one-way valves are for? They
prevent the blood from going in the opposite direction!
• Arteries carry blood (with oxygen) from the heart to the rest of
our bodies.
• Capillaries are tiny blood vessels. They have thin walls. This is
where the blood gives nutrients and oxygen to
the cells and picks up waste products and carbon
dioxide.
Los capilares son vasos sanguíneos. Tienen paredes finas.
• Blood has a watery liquid called plasma. The plasma carries nutrients and also red cells, white cells
and platelets.
• The red cells carry oxygen, the white cells fight infection and the platelets
help the blood to clot and form scabs, for example, when you fall over and
cut or scrape yourself.
raspas.

• We know that blood picks up the oxygen our body needs from the air in
the lungs, but how do the lungs get the air in the first place?
• Put your hands on your chest and tummy. Take a deep breath and
concentrate. What happens to your chest and stomach?
Pon tus manos sobre tu pecho y barriga. Coge aire profundamente y concéntrate.
¿Qué le pasa a tu pecho y estómago?
• Our respiratory system is made up of the nostrils in the nose, the
windpipe, the two bronchi and the two lungs.

tráquea, dos bronquios y dos pulmones.

umbilical cord.
4. The embryo becomes a fetus at nine weeks. It’s about the size of
an olive. It has arms and legs and it starts to have a face.

5. At three months it has all its organs. It’s about the size of an avocado.
7. The baby moves headfirst down the vagina and comes out into the world.
It is born. The umbilical cord is cut and becomes the belly button and the
baby breathes on its own and gets nutrients from its mother’s milk.
