VERB TO BE

(SER-ESTAR)

El verbo “to be” tiene una importancia especial en inglés. Se corresponde a los verbos españoles
“ser” y “estar”. Dependiendo del sentido de la frase deduciremos de cuál de los dos se trata.

I am English: Soy Inglés

I am in England: Estoy en Inglaterra

Tiene algunos usos especiales distintos a sus equivalentes españoles.

 Sirve para expresar edad, en cuyo caso se traduce por “tener”:

Mary is 20 years old: Mary tiene 20 años
I am 21: Yo tengo 21 años.
How old are you?: ¿Cuántos años tenés?

 Para expresar las sensaciones también se emplea el verbo “to be” y equivale al “tener”
español:
Are you hungry? : ¿Tenés hambre?
He is thirsty: Tiene sed

 También para hablar del tiempo atmosférico. En este caso se traduce por “hacer” o “haber”:
It is windy: Hay viento
It´s very cold: Hace mucho frío

Verb: THERE IS / THERE ARE

(VERBO: “HAY”)

El verbo there is / there are, significa “Hay”.

Vamos a usar “There is” (singular) cuando queremos decir que hay una sola cosa en el lugar.

Vamos a usar “there are” (plural) cuando hay dos o más cosas en el lugar.

Affirmative form

Long form (forma larga)

THERE IS A CHAIR IN THIS ROOM. (Hay una silla en ésta habitación)

THERE ARE TWO CHAIRS IN THIS ROOM. (Hay dos sillas en ésta habitación)

Short form (forma corta)

THERE´S A CHAIR IN THIS ROOM. (Hay una silla en ésta habitación)

THERE´RE TWO CHAIRS IN THIS ROOM. (Hay dos sillas en ésta habitación)

Negative form

Long form (forma larga)

There is not (no hay)

There are not (no hay)

Examples:

There is not a garage. (No hay garage.)

There isn´t a garage. (No hay garage.)

There are not two bathrooms in this house. (No hay dos baños en esta casa.)

There aren´t 2 bathrooms in this house. (No hay dos baños en esta casa.)

Interrogative form

Para poder armar la forma Interrogativa, debemos cambiar de lugar la palabra THERE por el verbo
IS o ARE para comenzar nuestra pregunta. De esta manera el verbo Is o Are quedará al inicio de
nuestra pregunta y la palabara There pasará a segundo lugar de la oración.
For Example:
+ There is a chair in my bedroom. (oración afirmativa)
? Is there a chair in my bedroom? (oración interrogativa)

+There are two chairs in my bedroom. (oración afirmativa)

? Are there two chairs in my bedroom? (oración interrogativa)

Para poder responder las preguntas de la forma interrogativa vamos a usar:

SHORT ANSWERS
(respuestas cortas)

Si es afirmativa (+) vamos a poner:

Yes, there is. (singular)
Yes, there are. (plural)
*siempre después del YES vamos a usar una coma (,).

Si la respuesta es negativa (-) vamos a poner:

No, tere isn’t. (singular)
