TB5000 B
INTRODUCTION
Thp Rmlon TB5000 is a two-shaft, heavy duty industrial gas
turbine with proven reliability, designed to run up to three
years between inspections and twelve years between over
hauls. The unit's on-site maintenance and overhaul capabil
ity can be further improved — using standard roil out
I equipment the gas generator unit may be removed for
overhaul in a central service workshop and replaced with a
,* . spare unit.
The rotor assembly, comprising a twelve-stage sub
! sonic axial flow compressor and two-stage overhung tur
V .
bine. is supported on two anti-whirl type sleeve bearings.
Compressor turbine rotors incorporate extended shank
roots to reduce disc rim temperature and both stages use
rotor tip shrouds to minimise leakage and increase effi
ciency. Variable inlet guide vanes are provided to aid start
• ‘
ing conditions and engine handling.
The four reverse flow tubular combustion chambers
externally mounted around the forward face of the centre Two 7P5000 with ? ptwposf tOfUT‘'< nx rr sf .>i
casing assembly are specially designed for long life and [inroln
readily accessible for inspection purposes. The fuel system is
designed to operate on a wide range of gaseous fuels
j mm
including refinery gas. landfill gas and high CO content gas.
as well as distillate fuel, with automatic changeover from
one fuel to another throughout the entire load range. Com
pressor centre casings are horizontally split to facilitate easy
inspection of compressor rotor and stator blades, turbine
inlet support casing and bearings.
A two-stage aerodynamically coupled power turbine
with air cooled rotor discs is used to transmit power to the
driven unit. Blade form is the same as the compressor tur
■ bine but extended roots and tip shrouds are not required.
iWi
To maintain alignment between rotating and static ele
ments, the power turbine stator casing is attached to the
gearbox through air cooled support struts within the
exhaust elbow.

With nearly 800 TB units currently in use throughout
the world, the TB5000 displays all the characteristics of high

STEAM INJECTION
Steam irnjection is now available for the TB5000 gas turbine.
The introduction of high pressure steam into the turbine’s
combustion chamber significantly reduces the NOx emis
sion levels from exhaust gases. When a further quantity of
steam, raised from a heat recovery unit in the turbine's
exhaust stack, is injected at compressor delivery or directly
into the turbine blading, substantial energy saving and
improvements in performance can be achieved,
Proven reliability and long periods between mainte
nance make the Ruston TB5000 ideally suited for CHP appli
cations where the turbine Is used to produce both electrical
power and heat which Is recovered from exhaust gases. n \

POWER GENERATION
The highly responsive two shaft Ruston TB5000 is ideally
suited for base load or standby electrical power generation
up to 3 81 MW. Its compact design, light-weight and ease of
operation and maintenance are ideal for offshore platforms
and remote installations.
Output shaft speed can be reduced via an epicyclic
gearbox to match the required input speed for a 50 or 60H2
salient pole generator. An open circuit ventilated generator
is normally supplied but a closed air circuit water cooled
P- 4, machine can be provided if required. The use of GEC
supplied gearboxes and alternators results in a high degree
of engineering and product liaison, benefitling the operator,
although equipment supplied by alternative manufacturers
can be offered. Standard output is 11 kV at SOHz or 13 8kV
at 60Hz. but voltage can be varied to meet operator
requirements as necessary.
Almost 400 TB engines are currently on power gener
ation duty.

MECHANICAL DRIVE
The high reliability and long service life of the TB5000
industrial gas turbine make it an excellent prime mover for
a variety of mechanical drive applications surh as driving
pumps and compressors for the petrtxhemical and process
industries.
The final drive uses either an epicyclic rcrluction gra r f)f
a parallel shaft increasing gear giving a range of output
speeds. An alternative direct drive system is available for
equipment rotating at the power turbine speed of 7950
rpm. An auxiliary gear train provides power for the engine

driven lubricating oil pump, and a liquid fuel pump where
required. Ruston can provide a choice of driven units to
ensure that the most suitable is used In any application. In
addition, total systems can be engineered to meet customer
1 requirements. The gas turbine and auxiliary drive gear is
''''f . ‘r Is mounted on a fabricated steel underbase and a compact
package set is assembled by the rigid attachment at the
drive end of an extension base to carry the compressor or
t
pump.

NOMAD 5
A version of the TB5000 is available as a self contained
mobile power station. Designated the Ruston Nomad 5, it is
a complete single trailer power package generating 3 BMW.
it consists of a 55 tonne, 15 metre articulated trailer with
four sections: control room; diesel enclosure; turbine and
AC generator compartments.
A comprehensive and well proven Rustronic control
system, housed within an air conditioned control room, pro
tects the Nomad 5 ensuring safe and reliable operation of
Its equipment under all operating conditions.
The unit can be moved at short notice by a standard
road tractor and fransferred from one location fo another as
changing circumstances dictate. The Nomad 5 which
requires only a minimum of external connections can be
made operational within 24 hours of arrival on site.

The ratings given are based on gas fuei without losses due to inlet and
exhaust pressure drops and are quoted at 15°C ambient temperature at
sea level. For the generating sets the generator and gearbox losses have
been allowed for but the mechanical drive horsepowers are quoted at
the turbine coupling flange, i.e. excluding driveh unit losses.
1
*The rating of the NOMAD mobile generating set is the power available
at the generator terminals at 15°C and sea level and includes all ducting,
gearbox and generator losses.

On-sile conversion of GT-825 units into GTL models
I
can bfi achieved through the replacement of key
engine components. Cooper service representatives
can overhaul existing GT-825s through the addition
ol the components shown below.
Converting GT-825s to GTLs offers significant
economic advantages. In fact, Superior’s conversion
package can pay for itself in less than one year's
time as a result of the savings in fuel and
maintenance alone.
