"It's kind of a futuristic fantasy, a little bit sci-fi," Townshend said. "It takes place
about 20 years from now, when everyone has been locked in their homes and put in
special garments called experience suits, through which the government feeds them
programs to keep them entertained. These suits are interconnected in a universal
network, a bit like the modern Internet, but combined with gas company pipes and
cable TV company wiring. The network is operated by an imperious media
conglomerate run by a dictatorial figure named Jumbo, who appears to be more
powerful than the government that first appointed him."
Predijo Internet
Written by Pete Townshend it had some success in the early 70s. While computer
networks existed at this time, they were not yet as present in our lives as the song
mentions, i.e., as they are today. "From tree to tree, from you to me. Traveling faster
than any highway. Every dream is wrapped in farce. Everybody gets carried away."
Although at the time Townshend spoke of it as a "futuristic fantasy," at his concerts
this century, The Who have described it as a song about the Internet.
