Millions of years ago Antarctica was warm and harbored plants and animals like dinosaurs. In
the last 6 million years, ice covered the entire continent.
In the last hundred thousand years the fluctuations of the average temperature of the air
have exceeded 10 ° C. These fluctuations are correlated with periods of glaciation and
interglaciation.
According to the British Antarctic Service , changes have been identified in the Antarctic
climate system, here the 10 main points are summarized:
3. Rapid increase in plant communities in the Antarctic Peninsula
The rapid warming of the western Antarctic Peninsula has changed the snow for rain during
the summer, which has meant an increase in the communities of plants, animals and microbes.
4. Rapid loss of ice in part of Antarctica
The Western Antarctic Ice Sheet has thinned significantly, particularly near the Amundsen
Sea Bay as a result of warmer ocean temperatures.
Nearly 90% of glaciers in the Antarctic Peninsula have retreated in recent decades. However,
the total Antarctic ice shows little change.
The ice sheet has decreased near the Amundsen Sea Bay
5. 10% increase in oceanic ice around Antarctica
Since 1980 there has been a 10% increase in the extent of oceanic ice, particularly in the Ross
Sea as a result of the strongest winds on the continent (due to the change in the ozone hole).
In contrast, oceanic ice has decreased to the west of the Antarctic Peninsula.
