ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Environmental impact is defined as any change to the environment, whether adverse or
beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization’s activities, products, or services.
From: Subsea Pipeline Integrity and Risk Management, 2014
Significant environmental impacts may result from the addition to the environment of various
substances from coal combustion, nuclear plant or fuel cycle operations, and
from photovoltaic manufacturing and applications. The emissions of coal plants have been studied
extensively, though there is still uncertainty about the ultimate environmental fate of these
emissions. According to a 1973 Battelle study,2 combustion of Eastern coal in a
conventional boiler with wet limestone scrubbing results in the release of 3000 tons of particulates,
18,000 tons of nitrous oxides, 15,000 tons of sulfur oxides, and about 400 tons of
hydrocarbons.* While some of the sulfur and nitrous oxides contribute to atmospheric particulate
concentrations in the form of sulfates and nitrate byproducts of gaseous emissions, others increase
the acidity of rainfall through the formation of nitric and sulfuric acids.
Be Kind
Kindness is an act that can never be overdone, especially considering the dire state of
our world. Kindness comes from our innate empathetic human nature—it enables us to
overcome our personal limitations and achieve true greatness. Kindness is the key to our
world’s most challenging problems, such as violence, inequality, racing extinction, and
climate change. Show that you care: Impact other people with you kindness. This
precious act extends to other beings and reaches the planet itself. See what a great
difference we can make in our lives and our communities by boldly expressing the
kindness that we are born with.
Don't Waste
Living in a sustainable way doesn’t mean shrinking our lives or having to give up the
comforts and enjoyments of modern life. By simply removing or reducing the waste in our
daily lives, we can make a remarkable improvement in our quality of living. Being aware
and actively practicing waste reduction substantially reduces stress in our lives and

helps heal the planet itself. Change really starts when we take a moment to fully
appreciate and respect the value of all things. It’s important to make sure our every-day
items are being fully utilized by ourselves and others by sharing, reusing, and recycling.
It’s in this way that we can achieve abundance and sustainability at the same time.

Air Pollution
The majority of air pollution is the result of human activities. For example, increased fossil fuel combustion
from motor vehicles, industrial factories and power plants all pump large quantities of air pollutants, such
as carbon monoxide, ozone and nitrous oxides, into the atmosphere. Other air pollutants, such as lead-based
compounds, can lead to serious health effects like cancer, or other types of reproductive effects and birth
defects.
Climate Change
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, human activities are largely responsible for an
increase in temperature around the globe, primarily due to carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas
emissions. This increase in temperature is leading to changes in where crops can grow and where certain
fish or animals can be found, all vital for feeding an increasing human population. The rise in global
temperatures is also causing glaciers to melt, releasing water that causes sea levels to rise and threaten
coastal communities and economies that rely on coastal resources.
Solutions
here are several simple things that people can do on a daily basis to minimize their impact on the
environment. For example, taking public transportation, biking or walking instead of driving will
reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Reducing the amount of fertilizer applied to lawns, gardens and
vegetables will lessen the likelihood of water pollution nearby, which is also beneficial for drinking
water and human health. Using less energy in the home can lessen the amount of pollution put
into the air by coal burning power plants. Any activity which reduces water and energy
consumption can lead to positive impacts on our environment.
