T heo Noorlander grew up in

the Netherlands, far from the
uptown neighborhoods of New
York, including the Bronx.
He knew nothing about it, and didn’t give
it so much as a fleeting thought during his
lifetime in Holland.
But one day, Noorlander witnessed a Dutch
television report about Christmas in the city.
recalled. “And they compared that to some
poor neighborhoods in the Bronx, where the
holidays are sometimes difficult for families
who are struggling. It touched me deeply.”
A composer and musician, Noorlander
was inspired to write a song, titled “Letters
to Santa,” that tells the story of a young boy
and girl from a low-income family writing
to Santa Claus, asking for a gift so they can
celebrate Christmas.
“For families with little money, it can be
perspective,” explained Noorlander.
“Letters to Santa” is presented from both
the brother and sister’s point of view, so
Noorlander began a search for a male and
female voice to record the song with.
Through the casting call website Backstage.
com, Noorlander located Manuel Hodgson, a
fifth-grader from Throggs Neck.
“His dream is to be a professional singer,”
said the boy’s mother, Maria-Elena Hodgson.
“He’s always been in school plays, and took
on Broadway, and recently sang at New
York-Presbyterian Hospital’s tree lighting
ceremony in Washington Heights.
“He’s been singing since he was about
three years old,” said his mother. “He loves
to perform.”
Noorlander invited the 10-year-old Manuel
to sing on “Letters to Santa.”

Santa”, que cuenta la historia de un niño y una
niña de una familia de bajos ingresos que le

quería retratar algo desde esa perspectiva”,

Chancellor Carmen Fariña
has announced that 15 schools
with existing Dual Language
programs will become Model Dual
Language programs for the 2015-
16 school year.
Each school will receive $10,000 to
purchase multilingual instructional materials
and be provided with ongoing professional
development for its staff.
The schools will also host visits by staff
from other schools with the intent to share best
practices and strengthen other sites’ existing
or prospective Dual Language programs.
The 15 programs selected include
elementary, middle and high schools in all
five boroughs.

Eight years ago, city
stakeholders had a vision that
a million trees could be planted
in New York.
The initiative, named
MillionTreesNYC and
organized by the Parks
Department and the New York
Restoration Project (NYRP),
was planted on Teller Avenue
and East 165th Street. Two
years before the anticipated
deadline, the millionth tree has been planted
in Joyce Kilmer Park, also in the Bronx.
The ceremony was held on November
20th.
Mayor Bill de Blasio, former Mayor
Michael Bloomberg, Bette Midler,
Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito and
NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell Silver
were present to plant tree No. 1,107,634, an
American linden.
Hundreds were present for the ceremony,
including volunteers and students from
PS35 Frank Siegel.
New York is the first city to take on such
a project.
“We are enormously grateful to the

internationally. It has led to a host of valuable
research regarding greening efforts and has
transformed acres of parkland and streets into
new, ecologically healthy, multi-story forests
that provide benefits to all New Yorkers.”
The number of trees planted by borough is
as follows: Brooklyn, 182,593, Manhattan,
80,016, Queens, 284,755, Staten Island,
173,134 and the Bronx, 276,600. The
remaining 2,902 were planted, but their
specific origins were not recorded.
And since the initiative was completed
ahead of schedule, additional funding was
made available to allow for an extra 150,000
trees to be planted over the course of
the next three years.
Now it’s time to take care of those
trees.
Trees offer us beauty, and they
also improve the air quality, slow
down climate change, provide
homes for wildlife and increase
property values.
MillionTreesNYC offers free
workshops on how to properly
maintain street trees and help
provide needed tools.
My children and I adopted our first street
trees in 2011. We watered them with 30
gallons of water a week from May through
October. We applied mulch twice a year, and
planted daffodils bulbs in the tree beds. Every
spring, we look forward to the signs of new
plant life, and start getting ready to care for
our trees again.
It has impacted others in our community,
and neighbors have come out to help us as
well.
I encourage you all to take care of our
amazing urban forest.

30 galones de agua a la semana de mayo a
octubre. Le ponemos abono dos veces al año,
y sembramos bulbos de narcisos en las faldas
de los árboles. Cada primavera esperamos las
señales de una nueva planta, y nos preparamos
para cuidar de nuestros árboles nuevamente.
Ha impactado a otros en nuestra comunidad,
y también vienen y nos ayudan. Yo los animo
a todos a cuidar nuestros increíbles bosques
urbanos.

View the stylings of smoke in the new
exhibit “Rosemarie Fiore: Smoke,” at the
Lehman College Art Gallery, now through
Jan. 5th, 2016. The works feature two series
of dramatic abstractions that are literally the
result of pyrotechnics—primarily color smoke
bombs whose exhaust Fiore harnesses using
machines she creates. The saturated colors
combine with waves and flows result from
the power of explosive movement such as
jumping jacks, monster balls, rings of fire, and
lasers. Fiore’s Smoke Painting series portrays
a rhythmic choreography of movement and
interactions with paper. The Lehman College

Be Secure against Scams
A consumer alert on five common
telephone scams was recently
issued by the office of Attorney
General Eric Schneiderman in
light of a recent uptick in reports
of telephone scammers posing as
officials from the Internal Revenue
Service and the Attorney General’s
Office.
These common scams, identified
complaints and other evidence
collected by the Attorney
General’s Office, often target
seniors, students, and first-
generation Americans.
Common Telephone Scams
IRS/Tax Collection Scam–
The caller will claim to be an
agent or police officer from the Internal
Revenue Service or Attorney General’s Office
calling about a past due tax balance that is
owed. The caller will tell the victim that unless
the debt is paid immediately, a team of officers
will come to the victim’s home that day to arrest
the victim. The scammer will also request that
the “IRS Tax Warrant” be paid with a Green
Dot Card Money Card or Western Union
MoneyGram. These scammers often use caller
ID spoofing so that the victim’s caller ID box
says “Internal Revenue Service” or displays
the phone number of the Internal Revenue
Service. Sometimes scammers
will also ask victims for personal
information such as a Social Security
number in order to commit identity theft.
Grandparent Scam– Typically, this
scam comes in the form of an urgent phone
call. The caller claims to be “your favorite
grandson” or just says “it’s me”… prompting
the grandparent to supply the needed name.
While the emergencies vary, the scenario is
usually this: The “grandson” is out of town
by and needs money fast -- to make bail, or to pay
for automobile repairs or medical
expenses. The caller begs the
grandparent not to tell his parents,
just wire the money immediately.
Scammers know that parents and
grandparents fear a call that tells
them their loved one is in trouble.
Each year, thousands of Americans
get caught in the Grandparent
Scam. Increasingly, scammers use actual
relatives’ names and information gleaned from
social media and other internet sites.
Jury Duty Scam– The caller will claim
to be an officer of the court and say there’s a
warrant for the arrest of the victim for failing
to report for jury duty. The scammer will also
claim that there is a fine for failing to show up
for jury duty, and that unless the fine is paid
immediately, the police will be sent to the
victim’s home to make an arrest. The scammer
will request that the “Jury Duty
Warrant” be paid with a Green
Dot Card Money Card or Western Union
MoneyGram. The scam has been around for
years and surfaces periodically in New York.
In one recent case, the calls were traced to a
Georgia prison.
Lottery Scam – The caller says you’ve
won a foreign lottery and requests that you, as
the “winner,” send a check or to wire money
to cover taxes and fees. Legitimate contests
never ask for money upfront. The caller may
request your banking information in order to
electronically direct deposit your winnings.
This is an attempt to steal your identity and
will wipe out your bank account.The callers
often use a name that sounds like a government
agency or official-sounding authority. The
name can be invented, like the “National
Sweepstakes Bureau,” or “The National
Consumer Protection Agency.” Sometimes
they will use an actual name of a government
agency, like the Federal Trade Commission or
the Attorney General’s Office. The scammers

representative of a local utility provider. In some

Money Card or Western Union MoneyGram.
Suspects committing this scam have often
obtained personal information via the internet,
Facebook, Instagram or other social media.

very early age, making ponche, as she calls it,
with her extended family in Santiago, in the
Dominican Republic.

However, never give out personal
information when you receive an unsolicited
call. If you receive a call soliciting personal
information, just hang up the phone, no matter
what the caller ID says. If the caller says he’s
from your bank and is checking on possible
unauthorized withdrawals from your account,
hang up the phone and then call your bank. If
it was your bank that was trying to call, then
it will be happy to confirm the call and will
often provide requests to you in writing. If
your bank says it wasn’t trying to reach you,
that means the caller you hung up on was a
scammer.
Beware if a callers asks to keep a
conversation a secret
A legitimate caller will never request that a
conversation remain a secret, and you should
immediately be suspicious. Whether the caller
claims to be from the government, a bank, or
a family member, requests for confidentiality
should raise a red flag.
Just say no!
You don’t have to be polite when you receive
unsolicited phone calls. The safest thing to do
is to say “no” and hang up. Legitimate callers
will typically also provide requests in writing.
It is better to be guarded than to fall victim.
Remember the old adage: “If it sounds too
good to be true, it probably is.” Be wary of any
offers or deals that sound too good to be true, as
they likely are too good to be true.

Hodgson of Noorlander. “At first I was
skeptical about his generosity, like any
mother would be. But I soon learned that
it’s just the way he is — a big-hearted man
who wants to help others.”
Noorlander is currently seeking a girl
vocalist from the Bronx to sing with Manuel
on the Christmas tune, and appear with the
boy in a music video.
Noorlander said he hopes to make the
final recording of “Letters to Santa” in
March and then shop the song to record
labels in time for a Christmas 2016 release.
Any money made from sales of the
song would be used to purchase Christmas
presents for struggling Bronx families,
Noorlander explained.
“I’ve been fortunate to have a comfortable
life and I want to help others if I can,” he
said.
Noorlander has also offered the song to
the United States Postal Service for use
with its annual Letters to Santa campaign.
“This is an important project, because
it’s meant to give back to the Bronx,” said
Hodgson.
It was when Noorlander prepared to visit
the borough for the first time earlier this
year, he noted that there was a lingering
sense among his fellow countrymen and
women that the Bronx was dangerous.
“When I told people in the Netherlands
that I was going to the Bronx, they said, ‘Oh
