Pulse: Palpable lift in an artery usually felt (manually) or detected electronically at a point where
the pulse is near the surface of the body.

The human body has various pulse points. They include the carotid, apical, radial, pedal, and
femoral pulse. The following image depicts the location of each of these points.
1) Carotid Pulse
1) pulso carotídeo
Carotid Pulse: One of the most commonly palpated pulses. It is felt with the fingers on one side of
the neck.
2) Radial Pulse
2) pulso radial
Radial Pulse: One of the most commonly palpated pulses. It is felt with the fingers on the wrist.
3) Apical Pulse
3) pulso apical
Apical Pulse: The pulse most commonly monitored with a stethoscope. This pulse is at the apex of
the heart.
Taking a Pulse
Tomando un pulso
Pulses can be obtained in multiple ways. While the carotid and radial pulses can be felt with the
health care professional’s fingers, the apical pulse must be taken with a stethoscope.
Then, place your fingers lightly on the neck to the side of the windpipe or trachea.
Be careful not to apply pressure to both carotid arteries at the same time; this may decrease blood
flow to the brain with adverse effects.
Character of a Pulse
1) Thready
1) Thready
ExampleThe pulse was very rapid and thready; I could barely feel his pulse at the wrist. The
patient’s condition was deteriorating.
2) Bounding
2) delimitación
Bounding: The Pulse rises forcefully in the artery and can be clearly felt on palpation.
Ejemplo
As intracranial pressure increased, the pulse became bounding and the pulse rate decreased.
“Mr. Smith has suffered severe burns on both arms. Use that stethoscope and get a/an ______
pulse on him.”
Listen closely to the following sentence and identify whether it is correct or incorrect.
Select the response that correctly completes the following statement: The patient was breathing
rapidly and looked pale, so I was surprised to find a strong, __________ pulse.
Respiratory Rate: The number of times the patient breathes in and out over one minute. Also
known as respirations or respirations per minute.
r = respirations
rr =respiratory rate
r = respiraciones
rr = frecuencia respiratoria
Dyspnea
Disnea
Dyspnea: When the patient feels that they are unable to breathe well or breathe in enough air or
oxygen.
In written communication this abbreviation is used to note Short of Breath (SOB), which is
frequently used instead of dyspnea.

more common in written communication, but can often be heard in conversation.

Now is a good time to learn about pulse oximetry. Pulse oximetry has become the 5th vital sign
and is regularly assessed when TPR and BP are measured.
Pulse oximetry is measured using a small portable non-invasive device placed on the patient’s
fingertip or earlobe. The device is a pulse oximeter. The pulse oximeter is often referred to as the
pulse ox.
The pulse oximeter uses beams of light to measure the amount of hemoglobin being carried in the
blood and then extrapolates oxygen saturation. A digital report is seen on the screen of the pulse
ox machine or monitor. A healthy person's reading is 94-99%.
Definition of Pulse oximetry: A measure of oxygen saturation in the peripheral arterial blood. It is
reported as peripheral capillary oxygen saturation or saturation of peripheral oxygen
Although technically the result of oximetry is a percent or %, the word “percent” or the symbol
percent are rarely used. There are three common forms of abbreviation of saturation of peripheral
oxygen:
1) One abbreviation (written and verbal) uses first letters: Saturation of Peripheral Oxygen = SpO2.
SpO2.
You will hear doctor say, “His S, P, O2 is down to 94; let’s start some O2.”
2) For another, (usually verbal), abbreviation the word is markedly shortened: Saturation of
Peripheral Oxygen= “sats”
A nurse says, “His sats are falling. Call the respiratory therapist.”
Una enfermera dice: "Sus sats están cayendo. Llama al terapeuta respiratorio.
You will hear: “His pulse ox came off of his finger tip” or “Her pulse ox is 96.”.
