Three is a crowd

Male in some cultures, female in others, three, like a tree, bridges heaven and earth. The
Triad relates opposites as their comixture, solution, or mediator. The synthesis or return to unity
after the division of two, it is also traditionally the first odd number.
The third leg of a stool gives it balance, the third strand of a braid makes a plait (knots
can only be tied in three-dimensional space). Stories, fairy tales, and spiritual traditions abound
with portentous threes, juggling past, present, and future with the knower, knowing, and the
known. As birth, life, and death, the triad appears throughout nature, in principle and form. The
triangle, trinity’s most simple and structural device, is the first stable polygon, and defines the
first surface.
In music, the ratios 3:2 and 3:1 define the intervals of the fifth and its octave, the most
beautiful harmonies other than the octave itself, and the key to all ancient tuning. Three is the
first triangular number.
The ​vesica piscis f​ ormed by two overlapping circles (​opposite top left​) immediately
invokes triangles. An equilateral triangle in a circle defines the octave as its circumcircle is twice
the diameter of its incircle (​below left)​ , and the area of the ring here is three times that of the
incircle. Below center we see Archimedes’ [287-212 BC] favorite discovery - the volumes of the
cone, sphere, and drum are in the ratios one to two to three.

Tres es una multitud

forma. El triángulo, el dispositivo más simple y estructural de la trinidad, es el primer polígono
estable y define la primera superficie.
En música, las proporciones 3:2 y 3:1 definen los intervalos de la quinta y su octava, las
armonías más bellas que no sean la octava en sí, y la clave de toda la afinación antigua. Tres es el
primer número triangular.
La ​vesica piscis​ formada por dos círculos superpuestos (​opuesto arriba a la izquierda)​
invoca inmediatamente triángulos. Un triángulo equilátero en un círculo define la octava ya que
su circuncírculo es el doble del diámetro de su incírculo (​abajo a la izquierda)​ , y el área del
anillo aquí es tres veces la del incírculo. Debajo del centro vemos el descubrimiento favorito de
Arquímedes [287-212 a. C.]: los volúmenes del cono, la esfera y el bidón están en las
proporciones de uno a dos a tres.
