ACTIVIDADES
El espacio reservado para la construcción
de una futura escuela ha sido
aprovechado para la creación de espacio
público temporal. Los antiguos terrenos
industriales se han acondicionado y
convertido en focos de actividad.
Las superficies asfaltadas pueden acoger
cualquier actividad espontánea; tan solo
dos pistas han sido específicamente
reservadas para la práctica del
baloncesto.
ESTANCIAS
En la orilla del canal, un graderío de
suave pendiente permite acercarse al
agua y contemplar las vistas. Además,
una serie de bancos en la ribera del canal
acompaña el inicio de un paseo por la
orilla.
RECORRIDOS
Una sencilla malla de caminos asfaltados
conecta las zonas de actividad con el
resto de calles del barrio. Una ruta para
peatones y ciclistas parte de la orilla
del canal y permite recorrer el antiguo
tejido industrial en pleno proceso de
reconversión.
EDIFICIOS
Los antiguos edificios industriales del
área han sido de derribados y en el lugar
está prevista la construcción de viviendas
y equipamientos. Mientras esto ocurre,
los terrenos han sido habilitados como
foco de actividades públicas.
VEGETACIÓN
Una pradera verde sirve de acceso al
lugar y en uno de sus laterales se han
plantado árboles de hoja caduca para
separar el espacio de la vía principal de
acceso rodado. Un sauce llorón en la
orilla marca el final del graderío junto al
agua y el inicio del paseo por el muelle.
AGUA
El canal Maselake, en las afueras de
Berlín, fue una de las vías de agua que
sirvió, en otra época, como soporte al
próspero tejido industrial de la ciudad.
En la actualidad, sus márgenes están
siendo reacondicionados para dar
cabida a nuevos usos residenciales.

ACTIVITIES
The space reserved for the future
construction of a school was used for
the creation of a temporary public
space. The former industrial land was
conditioned and turned into a node of
activity. The asphalt surfaces can host
any spontaneous activity; only two
courts have been specifically reserved
for basketball.
ROOMS
On the bank of the canal, low-rising
stands allow one to approach the water
and contemplate the views. In addition,
a series of benches along the shore
begin a promenade along those banks.
ROUTES
A simple network of asphalted paths
connects the activity areas to the rest of
the streets in the neighbourhood.
A route for pedestrians and cyclists goes
from the canal banks and covers the
old industrial terrain, in the middle of a
conversion process.
BUILDINGS
The old industrial buildings of the area
were demolished and in their place
housing and public service buildings
are to be built. While this happens, the
land has been fit out as public activities
centre.
VEGETATION
A green field serves as the entrance to
the location and on one side, deciduous
trees have been planted to separate the
space from the main road entrance.
A weeping willow on the banks marks
the end of the stands next to the water
and the beginning of the promenade
along the docks.
WATER
The Maselake canal, on the outskirts of
Berlin, was one of the waterways that
once served to support the prosperous
industrial fabric of the city. Its margins
are currently being remodelled to allow
new residential uses.

 El sistema de lagos y canales
asociados al río Havel, a su paso
por las antiguas zonas
industriales del distrito berlinés
de Spandau, está experimentado
un importante proceso de
renovación urbana. En muchos
casos, las parcelas frente al agua
han sido rápidamente ocupadas
por edificios de viviendas.
Sin embargo, hay zonas más
apartadas donde el desarrollo
está siguiendo un ritmo más
pausado. Tal es el caso del Canal
Maselake, que aún conserva el
encanto de su pasado industrial.
Junto a él, el nuevo paseo junto
al agua sirve para revelar las
trazas de la historia que todavía
permanecen en el lugar.
El antiguo espacio para las
actividades industriales se ha
transformado en un parque:
junto a una amplia plaza verde,
una escalinata de césped
desciende hasta la orilla,
redefiniendo el inicio del canal y
permitiendo el acceso al agua de
forma natural. La escalinata, que
está provista de un pantalán,
marca el inicio de una ruta
peatonal y ciclista a lo largo del
canal. Este recorrido, jalonado
por arbustos y plantas con flores,
que todavía conserva un carácter
de promenade industrielle,
estará muy pronto rodeado por
los nuevos bloques de vivienda.

Along the river Havel chain of
lakes and waterways the former
industrial quarters of Berlin-
Spandau are in the course of
urban reconfiguration. While the
many waterfront sites in the vast
area have been converted to
residential developments, the
evolvement of the inland sites is
following at a more careful
pace. The branch canal is part of
the historic industrial structures
where much of the former
industrial structure and charm
remains. The short piece of
promenade along Maselake
Canal grasps this rough
substructure and establishes a
new, pre-configured
infrastructure. Where residences
will soon be built, the
promenade along the canal
unlocks the potentials of the
inland waterfront.
The former functional vain of a
working landscape, is now
turned into a public park. Next
to a generous green square, a
stairway of lawn redefines the
head of the canal,
choreographing the linear vista
into the distance and
simultaneously giving access to
the water in a matter of course
way.
Junto al parque, una de las
parcelas reservadas a la
construcción de una futura
escuela también ha sido objeto
de un tratamiento experimental
de activación del lugar. En este
caso, los restos de una
edificación industrial fueron
sellados con una capa plana de
asfalto para eliminar cualquier
resto y evitar posibles escapes.
La gran superficie negra,
conectada con el resto de calles
cercanas mediante una malla de
caminos asfaltados, se ha
convertido en un importante
centro de actividad. El asfalto ha
sido pintado con una trama de
líneas onduladas, cuyas curvas
de color amarillo provocan una
sensación casi de mareo que
desdibuja las verdaderas
dimensiones del lugar.
Las ondas, que imitan los radios
de giro de los camiones de
mercancías, sugieren ideas para
el juego. El único elemento
vertical en todo el lugar son las
canastas de baloncesto que
parecen anclar la intervención al
terreno que tiene por debajo.
Por último, las praderas
ligeramente rehundidas sirven
de drenaje y se mantienen
siempre verdes, enmarcando la
superficie asfaltada para
mostrarla como verdadero
escenario de actividad.
The stairway, which features a
boat-slip, marks the beginning
of a pedestrian and bicycle way
along the canal. While the path
still leads along remaining
commercial and industrial sites
(a promenade industrielle) the
canal will soon be an orienting
landscape element amidst
housing–accompanied on both
sides by a lush vegetation of
shrubs and flowering perennials.
Next to this new park, a reserve
space for the later construction
of a school lent itself to an
experimental treatment and an
activation of the site. On the
post-industrial brown-field two
large foundations were sealed
off with an even asphalt surface
to forego a full clearing of the
ground from debris and possible
contaminations. Connected to
the surrounding residential
streets by a simple grid of
asphalted paths, the blacktop
surfaces have become fields of
activity. The asphalt surfaces are
painted with an oscillating line
texture, whose yellow colour
waves create an almost dizzying
effect, which blurs the site’s
dimensions. Analogously yellow
guardrails–a now superfluous
delineation of the turn radia for
trucks and transporters–now
give possible instructions for
play. As the only vertical
element in the area, a set of
basketball baskets seems to
anchor the place with the
ground beneath. The slightly
sunken, shallow pools of lawn
serve as drainage and keep an
even green which frames the
bituminous paintings and
exposes the asphalt-fields as
veritable stages of activity.
