La Vaguada de las Llamas es un

Como su nombre indica, la
topografía del parque es la

La Vaguada de las Llamas is a
large space that the city had for
conversion into an urban park.
It is a plot that is parallel to the
structure of the city and
bordered by two perimetral
roads that define an elongated
shape. Its name in Spanish
reveals that the characteristic of
the park’s topography is a
watercourse (vaguada) and its
lowest point has a torrent.
The proposal is based on the
creation of a Garden Art and
Atlantic Landscape Culture
Centre in la Vaguada de las
Llamas, focused on the
representation of the variety,
richness and diversity of the
landscape and the vegetation in
the Atlantic climate.
The large surface area allows
the proposal of a general
structure with a unitary idea that
the layout of gardens of
different sizes and content will
be based on, as well as
buildings integrated on their
slopes and a large performance
space that will allow for
different types of performances.
Entrances
The main interest of the park is
on the east side. The idea is to
thus connect the Sardinero
beach, a natural space of utmost
importance for Santander, with
the Parque Atlántico. Upon
arriving to the park, a system of
paths guides us through a dense
grove that gives way to the top

Estructura del Parque
La estrategia de organización del
parque surge de la intención de
reproducir la geometría de la
geografía atlántica, definiendo
para ello un contorno de carácter
geográfico. Estos contornos se
materializan en taludes vegetales
escalonados que bordean todo
el parque. Los taludes, que
contienen vegetación en sus
tramos horizontales, generan
escaleras, rampas y anfiteatros
que darán la continuidad
necesaria a este nuevo límite
geográfico. Las plataformas
resultantes estructuran el parque
en tres cotas, tres tipos de
espacios con usos y
percepciones diferentes de la
cultura atlántica.
En la cota más baja encontramos
el océano central, inaccesible al
visitante, que contiene gran
parte de la flora y fauna
protegidas existentes, así como
nuevas especies de juncos.
También encontramos en él un
lago artificial con surtidores y
agua en movimiento.

water extends over the park,
drawing the contour of the
Atlantic Ocean with the
complexity and singularity that
its geographical features
contribute.
Occasional entrances are
introduced transversally where
the city requires them.
Park structure
The park organisation structure
arises from the intention to
reproduce the geometry of
Atlantic geography, defining a
geographic contour.
These contours are materialized
in natural staggered batters that
border the entire park.
The batters, which hold
vegetation in their horizontal
stretch, generate stairs, ramps
and amphitheatres that will give
necessary continuity to this new
geographical limit. The resulting
platforms mark three levels,
three types of spaces with
different uses and perceptions
of Atlantic culture.
At the lowest level we find the
central ocean, inaccessible to
the visitor, which holds most of
the existing protected flora and
fauna, as well as new species of
rushes. We also find an artificial
lake with jets and moving water.
Bordering this central space is
the Atlantic seaside, a route
with few trees from which the
walker can contemplate, close
up, the pre-existing vegetation
or new plantation located on
the lower level.

se encuentra la orilla atlántica, un
recorrido con pocos árboles
desde el cual el paseante puede
contemplar de cerca la
vegetación preexistente o de
nueva plantación dispuesta en la
cota más baja.
Por encima de la orilla se eleva
otra plataforma que organiza la
mayor parte del programa del
parque: arboledas densas,
jardines atlánticos, espacios para
juegos infantiles, cobertizos,
restaurante, aparcamientos, etc.
Recorridos
El parque está ordenado por una
trama de caminos longitudinales
y transversales que lo recorren
en toda su extensión y conducen
a los visitantes.
Los recorridos longitudinales se
producen bordeando el océano
central, siguiendo su geografía y
respetando las zonas húmedas
centrales. Permitirá al paseante
contemplar de cerca estas
especies y disfrutar de la
tranquilidad de la cota más baja.
Asimismo, un carril bici recorre
longitudinalmente el parque,
generando un circuito de 2.600
metros.
Transversalmente se proponen
una serie de caminos que
conecten la orilla europeo-
africana con la americana. Estas
rutas se producirán a través de
pasarelas que penetran entre los
juncos, sin apenas tocar el suelo,
respetando la vegetación e
introduciendo al visitante en el
corazón del océano.

children’s play areas, sheds, a
restaurant, parking, etc.
Routes
The park is organised into a set
of longitudinal and transversal
paths that run throughout and
guide visitors.
The longitudinal routs go along
the central ocean, following its
geography and respecting the
central wet areas. It will allow
the walker to contemplate these
species close up and enjoy the
calmness of the lowest level.
A bike path will also run
longitudinally along the park,
generating a circuit of 2,600
metres. Transversally, a series of
paths that connect the
European/African shores to the
American shores are proposed.
These routes will be produced
by means of walkways that go
into the rush, hardly touching
the ground, respecting
vegetation and letting the
visitor into the heart of the
ocean.

elemento de gran importancia en la
configuración del parque, ya que el
sistema de recogida y gestión será
visible y contribuirá a estructurarlo.
Vegetación

introduce la vegetación
perteneciente a la latitud
representada, líneas de árboles
que se desdensifican desde los
bordes hasta la orilla colonizando
el parque, obteniendo una imagen
variada pero ordenada.

Water is a highly important
element, since the collection
and management system will be
visible and will contribute to its
structure.
Vegetation
The vegetation is organised in
transversal strips that follow the
order of the parallels. In each
strip, the vegetation pertaining
to the represented latitude will
be introduced, rows of trees
that blur from the edges to the
shore, colonizing the park,
creating an image that is varied
but orderly.
