French traditional costumes

For their day-to-day activities, The French, both in the countryside and the cities, wear

modern Western-style clothing. Perhaps the most typical item of clothing associated

with the French is the black beret. Men wear this, particularly in rural areas.

The French are renowned for fashion design. Coco Chanel, Yves Saint-Laurent,

Christian Dior, and Jean-Paul Gautier are all French fashion design houses and people

around the world wear those creations. Because France is divided into many different

regions there is actually no national dress. Each French region has their own

traditional dress and they are very different from each other.

The most famous French Traditional dress could be the Breton costume or the

Alsatian costume; commonly associated French clothing is the beret and the Breton

Shirt. Every region has its own specific design of the national costume.
People wear traditional costumes at festivals and celebrations. In Alsace, women may

be seen in white, lace-trimmed blouses and aprons decorated with colorful flowers.

Women's costumes in Normandy include white, flared bonnets and dresses with wide,

elbow-length sleeves. In general, traditional men's clothing in France consists of three

basic pieces: a linen undershirt, a knee-length pants and a pair of knee-high socks.
