Evidence: Would you change if your loved ones asked you to?

During the contextualization of this learning activity, Richard and Caroline

made a presentation about the future of food. By the end of the presentation,
Richard asked this question:

Would you change your current behavior if your grandchildren asked you to?

For this evidence, you need to, first, read a letter written by a child who lives
in the future and, then, write a response to him. Let’s begin!

Durante la contextualización de esta actividad de aprendizaje, Richard y Caroline hicieron una

presentación sobre el futuro de los alimentos. Al final de la presentación, Richard hizo esta
pregunta:

Para esta evidencia, primero hay que leer una carta escrita por un niño que vive en el futuro y

This is Cameron. He lives in the year 2050. He wrote an open letter to the
people who lived on Earth by the year 2000. He is 12 years old and he has a
few things to say about the experiences he has lived so far. Read his letter. You
will find it below.

Dear fellow citizens of the Earth in 2000,

My name is Cameron Cahill. I live in Mexico City. I’m writing this letter from the
future. I know you might be a little surprised to hear that, but a few friends and I
had the idea of writing to our ancestors. I chose to write to you, the people who
lived in Earth by 2000. I hope my words help you decide if the future is good for
you. In case it is not, you can still change it!
Este es Cameron. Vive en el año 2050. Escribió una carta abierta a la gente
que vivió en la Tierra para el año 2000. Tiene 12 años y tiene algunas cosas
que decir sobre las experiencias que ha vivido hasta ahora. Lea su carta. Lo
encontrará a continuación.

Queridos conciudadanos de la Tierra en el año 2000,

Mi nombre es Cameron Cahill. Vivo en la Ciudad de México. Estoy escribiendo

esta carta del futuro. Sé que te sorprenderá oír eso, pero algunos amigos y yo
tuvimos la idea de escribirle a nuestros ancestros. Elegí escribirle a usted, la
gente que vivió en la Tierra para el 2000. Espero que mis palabras le ayuden a
decidir si el futuro es bueno para usted. En caso de que no lo sea, ¡todavía

Hay grandes cosas sobre el futuro. Tenemos tablas voladoras para moverse.
Son muy útiles para llegar a la escuela, por ejemplo. Podemos ir muy rápido y
lo mejor de ellos es que no necesitan ser acusados. Usan energía solar, así
que mi tabla se carga sola mientras me muevo. En realidad, ninguno de los
dispositivos que usamos todos los días tiene que ser cargado con cables. Mi
abuela me ha dicho que cuando era joven, ¡siempre llevaba un cargador de
teléfono móvil! Ni siquiera tengo cargadores porque todos mis dispositivos
obtienen su energía directamente de la luz solar. Papá dice que este es uno de
los mayores avances de la ciencia. Dice que usar masivamente la tecnología
solar no fue fácil, pero cuando sucedió, nuestro futuro cambió.

Hay otras cosas interesantes sobre el futuro, por ejemplo, usamos trajes de
baño muy divertidos para ir a la playa. He visto algunas fotos de personas del
pasado vistiendo bonitos bikinis y shorts en la playa. ¡Nuestros trajes de baño
son horribles! Tenemos que estar todos cubiertos cuando lleguemos al mar. Mi
profesor de biología me explicó que hay una sobrepoblación de medusas por
todo el mundo. Ella dice que los océanos solían ser un ecosistema equilibrado
pero ahora, muchas especies marinas se han extinguido. Por esa razón, los
peces como las medusas han aumentado en número y no es seguro nadar sin
protección porque si uno de estos toques usted puede conseguir muy enfermo.

There are great things about the future. We have flying boards to move around.
They are very helpful for getting to school, for example. We can go very fast
and the best thing about them is that they don’t need to be charged. They use
solar energy, so my board charges by itself while I’m moving around. Actually,
none of the devices we use every day has to be charged using wires. My
grandma has told me that when she was young, she used to have a mobile
phone charger with her at all times! I don’t even have chargers because all my
devices get their energy directly from the sunlight. Dad says this is one of the
greatest advances of science. He says that using the solar technology
massively was not easy, but when it happened, our future changed.

There are some other interesting things about future, for example, we use very
funny swimsuits to go to the beach. I’ve seen some photos of people from the
past wearing nice bikinis and shorts at the beach. Our swimsuits are horrible!
We have to be all covered when we get into the sea. My biology teacher
explained to me that there is an overpopulation of jellyfish all around the world.
She says that the oceans used to be a balanced ecosystem but now, many
marine species have gone extinct. For that reason, fish like the jellyfish have
increased in numbers and it is not safe to swim without protection because if
one of these touches you can get very sick.

About the future I can also tell you about our food. We eat very healthy and
delicious dishes. For example, we have a soup made out of spirulina. Spirulina
is a super food because it has a lot of protein in it. When I was little I used to eat
spirulina in capsules but now my mom has learned to make a spirulina soup,
which I think is very tasty. I have heard that you used to eat a lot of beef and
hamburgers by 2000. I love hamburgers! I think they are great but I don’t get to
eat them very often because they are incredibly expensive!
I have told you a few things about the future. What do you think of it? Do you
like it? I enjoy things very much, actually. Just one little thing, remember that the
future is in your hands now. You can leave it the same, make it worse or make it
much better. I hope you have lots of great years ahead.

Sobre el futuro también puedo hablarles de nuestra comida. Comemos platos

muy saludables y deliciosos. Por ejemplo, tenemos una sopa hecha de
espirulina. Espirulina es un súper alimento porque tiene una gran cantidad de
proteínas en él. Cuando era pequeña solía comer espirulina en cápsulas pero
ahora mi mamá ha aprendido a hacer una sopa de espirulina, que creo que es
muy sabrosa. He oído que solías comer mkucha carne de res y hamburguesas
para el 2000. ¡Me encantan las hamburguesas! ¡Pienso que son grandes pero
no consigo comerlos muy a menudo porque son increíblemente costosos!

Les he dicho algunas cosas sobre el futuro. ¿Qué piensan de él? ¿Les gusta?
Disfruto mucho las cosas, en realidad. Sólo una pequeña cosa, recuerda que el
futuro está en tus manos ahora. Puedes dejarlo igual, hacerlo peor o hacerlo

I was surprised to learn that even though you don’t have the natural wealth
that we have, you are happy. From here, I answer that if I had the power to
prevent the damage the planet is suffering, I would prevent it for you. If I
could, I would change pollution with and global warming into something
more positive for humans and other species, knowing this makes me think
about what would happen if I had a lot of money or political power, maybe I
would campaign about the conservation of the planet. If I could return the
time, I would avoid industrialization. He would live like our nomadic
ancestors and thus secure provisions for the future. If I could teleport, I
would bring you big baskets of delicious fruits and vegetables and if I could,
I would bring you to this time so you would know how wonderful it is, maybe
it’s not too late for that. If I could stop environmental degradation, I know
you could enjoy the same things I do, but with more technology. If I could
have one of those flying skateboards, I could take pictures of all the
ecosystems and send them to you so you could know what our planet was
like.
