Wood Stoves
For my home I'd probably plan something like the one above. But I'd sure enjoy a visit to
this home on a cool evening.
The heater below gives an idea of how fanciful heaters can be. This one looks like something
Gaudi might have done.
Whatever the inspiration, it suits the homeowners style and sense of whimsy.
This masonry heater has nice proportions and a sense of scale appropriate for the space.
Notice that the stone portion of the chimney doesn't extend to the ceiling. In this
particular design, using stove pipe to complete the exhaust path allows the heater to
maintain very pleasing proportions.
On the other hand, an all-stone chimney can have a very pleasing effect and good proportions of
its own.
Here's a smaller scale masonry heater. It shows how heaters can retain the charm of a fireplace
while being much more energy efficient.
I'll be blunt here. This is not one of my favorite examples of a masonry heater. I'm showing it
because it makes a point of how varied heaters can be.
Also it shows that because of the low exterior temperature of the masonry away from the
firebox wood can be in close proximity.
Positioning the heater close to a wall isn't best for heat distribution, but you can do it if
the house design demands it.
Brick and stone are the most popular materials for masonry heaters.
This brick heater shows how effective even a simple design can be. In this situation the
heater easily warms the living room and kitchen.
Looking at all these heaters reminds me of just how widely adaptable masonry heaters are.
I haven't loved every heater I've seen, but I glad owners can have units that suit their
taste. There are designs I wouldn't want in my own home, but I sure enjoy the fact that
other people have them.
Although many of the units pictured above are completely custom built, prefab units
provide a pre-made firebox and smoke path (the complicated part of the construction)that
can be finished in the style of your choice.
It also ensures good function if there isn't a mason experienced in the construction of
masonry heaters in your area.
Of course, the simplest way to go is completely premade systems. If one of these suite
your taste, it's an excellent answer.
If you're planning a new home, I hope I've convinced you that a masonry heater is a
worthy of consideration
Masonry Heaters
Masonry heaters are extremely efficient wood burning devices. In fact, they can reach efficiencies of
more than 90%. In my opinion, they are probably the best way to heat with wood.
These heaters have many variations and go by several names. These include: Russian fireplace,
Russian Stoves, Soapstone Heaters, Austrian Stoves, Contra flow Heaters, Finnish Heaters, German
Stoves, Swedish Stoves, Grundofen, Kachelofen, Slavic heater…
Long winters and scarce fuel created the need for efficient heaters. The result was the evolution of
masonry heaters.
These heaters work on a different premise than either a wood burning stove or fireplace.
The basic idea is to have a large mass of masonry absorb heat completely from the fire, then radiate it
slowly into the room after the fire dies down.
As I mention on the Wood Burning page , as a log burns various resins vaporize. These resins ignite at
different temperatures.
In a slow burning fire, the temperature may not become high enough to ignite all the resins. The resins
then pass out as smoke. This is undesirable both because it represents heat loss and air pollution.
The fire in a Russian fireplace heats the secondary combustion chamber to a high enough temperature
to ignite all resins in the smoke. The temperature in the secondary combustion chamber can reach
1800 degrees or more.
The combustion of all resins means not only will the maximum amount of heat be released from the
wood burned, but also that there is very little pollution. The other major feature of a Russian fireplace
design is that the exhaust from the fire passes through a maze-like series of baffles before exiting the
chimney. This allows transfer of all the heat produced by the complete burn to pass to the masonry
mass.
The smoke path doesn't have to be as convoluted as the one in this diagram, but it gives you the idea.
When the fire burns down this stored heat gradually radiates back into the room.
Because of these design features, you can burn wood with 90% efficiency. Some heaters claim even
higher efficiencies! As all the different names I listed above suggest, there are many variations of this
basic design. Many of the variations have to do with the smoke path and firebox size.
Definition
A masonry heater is a solid-fueled heating device constructed mainly of masonry materials in which the
heat from intermittent fires burned rapidly in its firebox is stored in its massive structure for slow
release to the building. It has an interior construction consisting of a firebox and heat exchange
channels built from refractory components.
- Tight fitting doors that are closed during the burn cycle
- Under normal operating conditions, the external surface of the masonry heater, except immediately
surrounding the fuel loading door(s), does not exceed 110 C. (230 F.)
- The gas path through the internal heat exchange channels downstream of the firebox includes at
least one 180 degree change in flow direction, usually downward, before entering the chimney
- The length of the shortest single path from the firebox exit to the chimney entrance is at least twice
the largest firebox dimension
The weight of the heater requires a strong foundation designed to support it. This means a masonry
heater usually isn’t suitable as a retrofit.
Any of these type units need to be built properly to function well. As the description above indicates,
the smoke path is quite convoluted. Constructing it on-site is time consuming and a true test of a
mason’s skill.
Unfortunately, such skilled craftsmen are in short supply. If you find one, you can expect to pay for
quite a few hours of their time to construct such a complex heater from scratch.
Prefab Units
These units are produced by several different companies. They typically consist of a masonry or stone
core that is constructed in modules at the factory and then assembled on site.
Some have a finished exterior. Others allow the homeowner to finish the heater with stone or brick to
fit the design of their home.
Prefab units still require a strong foundation and the skill of a mason to assemble, but the complicated
combustion chamber and smoke path, the most difficult and time-consuming part of the construction,
are done at the factory. This means the homeowner can count on the heater working well while saving
some money on labor.
Using these wood burning units puts some restrictions on a home’s design.
This type of heater work best in homes with a fairly open floor plan so the warmth from the heater can
circulate freely.
When designing a home to accommodate a masonry stove or heater, the stove should be in the central
part of the room. This lets the retained heat radiate from all sides. It would make no sense to have the
masonry mass extending beyond the outside wall as architects often do with traditional fireplaces.
Some people may not want to have a block of masonry as a focal point of their home. Obviously, this
is a matter of personal taste. Personally, I find the combination of beauty and efficient function of a
masonry heater to be extremely attractive. If I ever find myself building a new home, it will include a
masonry heater. It will probably be a prefab with a custom finish (unless I happen to find a true artisan
mason to make it for me). If you’d like to see more of what some of these heaters look like click here

¡Saludos!

MI ESTUFA RUSA
DESDE QUE EL HOMBRE ESTA EN LA TIERRA NOHAY NADA MAS LINDO QUE PRENDER Y
DISFRUTAR UN FUEGUITO Y QUE MEJOR QUE APROVECHAR EL INVIERNO PARA
HACERLO Y CALENTARNOS UN POCO.
SIN BIEN HAY UNA PARTE DE LA SOCIEDAD QUE DISFRUTA DEL GAS NATURAL O DE
RED A UN BAJO COSTO TAMBIEN HAY UNA GRAN PARTE DE NUESTRA SOCIEDAD QUE
NO LO POSEE Y DEBE ABASTECERSE A OTRO COSTO.
CON ESTA IDEA EL INTA HACE ALGUNOS AÑOS EMPEZO MUY ACERTADAMENTE A
PROMOCIONAR UNA ESTUFA DE FACIL CONSTRUCCION Y DE SIMPLE MANEJO, QUE
TUBO UNA GRAN ACEPTACION TANTO EN EL INTERIOR DE NUESTRO PAIS COMO EN
OTROS PAISES A TRAVEZ DE LA WEB.
HACE AÑOS QUE EXPERIMENTO CON ESTE TIPO DE ESTUFAS QUE ERAN DE USO
FRECUENTE EN EUROPA ORIENTAL, RUSIA FINLANDIA, ETC Y QUE HOY SE
GENERALIZAN BAJO LA DENOMINACION DE ESTUFAS RUSAS.
NO PIEDRAS, NO METALES.
ESTA DIFERENCIA PUEDE SER RELLENADA CON LANA DE VIDRIO Y PERMITIRA QUE LA
DILATACION DEL MARCO NO PRODUZCA RAJADURAS EN LA ESTRUCTURA DE LA
ESTUFA.
COMO PUERTA PUEDE UTILIZARSE UNA VIEJA PUERTA DE HORNO DE COCINA A LEÑA O
HACER UNA A MEDIDA CON HIERRO ANGULO Y CHAPA
LA SERPENTINA DE AIRE CALIENTE SERA UNA “U” DE 1 METRO DE LARGO HECHA EN
CAÑO ESTRUCTURAL DE 50MM DE DIAMETRO CON UNA SEPARACION DE 10CM ENTRE
SUS BRAZOS.
ESTAMOS HABLANDO DE UNA ESTUFA QUE SE PUEDE HACER CON 250 LADRILLOS
COMUNES, 4 BALDES DE BARRO Y UNA PUERTA DE HIERRO.
COMO DIJE AL COMIENZO TIENE BAJO CONSUMO DE LEÑA, PODEMOS AGREGAR QUE
ANDA MEJOR CON LEÑA BARATA COMO ALAMO O SAUCE Y DADA LA PROFUNDIDAD
DE SU FOGON PERMITE ALIMENTARLA CON TRONCOS O RAMAS DE HASTA70 CM DE
LARGO SIMPLIFICANDO LA INCOMODA TAREA DEL PICADO DE LA LEÑA.
DE LOS MODELOS QUE CONOSCO ES LA MASFACIL DE USAR POR SU FACIL ENCENDIDO
Y POR QUE NO HUMEA CUANDO ABRIMOS LA PUERTACON LA
ESTUFA EN FUNCIONAMIENTO.
PERO PARA MI LO QUE MAS VALOR TIENE ES QUE AL LEVANTARSE POR LA MAÑANA
CASA Y ESTUFA ESTEN CALIENTES, LO QUE SE LOGRA POR UNA CUESTION MUY SIMPLE.
CUANDO NOS VAMOS A DORMIR DEJAMOS UNA MASA DE MAS DE 400 KILOS DE
LADRILLOS CALIENTE QUE SEGUIRA A ESA TEMPERATURA HASTA MUCHO TIEMPO
DESPUES DE ACABARSE LA LEÑA.
ES MUY COMODO TENER EN CASA ESTA GRAN FUENTE DE CALOR QUE A SU VEZ NO
TIENE UNA TEMPERATURA SUPERFICIAL CAPAZ DE PRODUCIR QUEMADURAS POR
CONTACTO, QUE ES UN ACCIDENTE MUY COMUN CON ESTUFAS DE HIERRO O
SALAMADRAS.
