Introducción
Hace años la revista PLoS Medicine publicó un artículo (1) que se convertiría en
el paper más descargado (¿y más leído?) de la historia (2). Expresó la preocupación de
que muchos hallazgos publicados fuesen posiblemente falsos. Hoy en día la
preocupación tal vez debería centrarse más en la aplicación de los hallazgos científicos.
El principio terapéutico
Hasta la fecha no existe tratamiento curativo alguno de las enfermedades
genéticas. El principio terapéutico estipula que es lícito intervenir en una parte del
cuerpo cuando no hay otra forma para sanar la totalidad del cuerpo, bajo las siguientes
condiciones: consentimiento informado de la persona, esperanza de éxito, e
imposibilidad de curar la totalidad sin intervención. En el caso genético, no hay la
posibilidad de sanar, ni consentimiento, ni esperanza de éxito. En el Ecuador, la falta de
legislación y también la falta de acompañamiento profesional convierten el diagnóstico
genético prenatal en una espada de doble filo (4).
