I. Abstract:
The following experience was carried out in order to investigate some of the factors involved
in corrosion, as well as learn to control and prevent corrosion and relate the corrosion
processes to the operation of an electrochemical cell. Initially we placed 12 nails previously
sanded in 12 test tubes with the following reagents: NaOH, Na2Cr2O7, HCl, Na2CO3,
HNO3, NaSCN, Na3PO4, KOH, KNO3, NaCl, H2SO4, KSCN, taking into account the initial
pH in each of the mixtures; Then we add K3Fe(CN)6 and observe the behavior of these
reactions, resulting in the oxidation of the nails in most of the neutral acids and solutions.
Then we carried out a reaction that involved metal pairs (two metals in contact), preparing
an agar-agar solution, and thus mixing it with the solution of K3Fe(CN)6 and phenolphthalein
as well as a bent nail and a straight one. We use these preparations to cover the nails, zinc
sheets, copper wire, since, in this way, we would determine what would happen with each
of them; We note that Zn protected the nail from corrosion while Cu did not. After this
investigation, we can verify that using acidic or neutral substances we can oxidize iron more
easily.
