The time is one o'clock in the morning.

The place is the Ritesville town art gallery.

A window opens and a man comes in. His name is Harry Black, and he is a
thief.
Se abre una ventana y entra un hombre. Se llama Harry Black y es un
ladrón.

It is dark in the art gallery, but Harry has a light. He looks across the room
at a painting.
Está oscuro en la galería de arte, pero Harry tiene una luz. Él mira a
través de la habitación un cuadro.

"There it is!" he says.

"¡Ahí está!" él dice.

Harry moves quickly across the room. He stands and looks at
the painting.
Harry se mueve rápidamente a través de la habitación. Se para y

"A million dollars for this?" he thinks. "I don't understand it."
"¿Un millón de dólares por esto?" él piensa. "No lo entiendo".

But he takes a knife from his coat.

Pero él saca un cuchillo de su abrigo.
Then he takes the painting very, very slowly from its frame.
Luego toma el cuadro muy, muy lentamente de su marco.

Harry goes back across the room to the window, but he walks into a table. There
is a beautiful blue glass vase on the table. It falls on the floor and breaks into a
hundred pieces.
Harry regresa por la habitación hacia la ventana, pero camina hacia una mesa.

Harry smiles. "Is that a million-dollar vase?" he thinks.

"It isn't now!"

He runs across the pieces of glass to the window.

Harry has a room in Mrs. Allen's rooming house. He goes quietly up to his room
and closes the door.
Harry tiene una habitación en la casa de la señora Allen. Sube en silencio a su
habitación y cierra la puerta.

Mrs. Allen and her daughter, Janey, are sleeping. They don't hear him.
La señora Allen y su hija, Janey, están durmiendo. Ellos no lo escuchan.

In his room, Harry takes the painting from his bag. He puts it in a newspaper,
then he puts the newspaper under his bed.
En su habitación, Harry saca el cuadro de su bolsa. Lo pone en un periódico,

In the morning, Janey Allen is in the kitchen. She is putting old bottles into a box.

"Recycling is important," Janey thinks.

On the TV, a reporter is at the Ritesville art gallery. He is talking about the painting.

"It's a million-dollar painting," he is saying. "Here's a photo of it."

"Es una pintura de un millón de dólares", dice. "Aquí hay una foto de eso".

Now the reporter is talking about the blue glass vase.
Ahora el reportero está hablando del jarrón de cristal azul.

"It's in a hundred pieces now," he says.

"Está en cien pedazos ahora", dice.
Janey looks at the photo of the vase, then she asks her mother, "Do you have any old bottles?"
Janey mira la foto del jarrón y luego le pregunta a su madre: "¿Tienes botellas viejas?"

"No," Mrs. Allen says. "That's all, Janey. But the newspaper recycling truck is coming today."
"No", dice la señora Allen. "Eso es todo, Janey. Pero el camión de reciclaje de periódicos vendrá hoy".

"Of course!" Janey says. "It's Friday!"

Harry isn't in his room.
Harry no está en su habitación.
He is talking on his telephone to a man in Seattle.

The man wants the painting, but Harry isn't happy.
El hombre quiere la pintura, pero Harry no es feliz.
"Five thousand dollars?"
"¿Cinco mil dolares?"
Harry says. "No! It's a million dollar painting! . . . What? . . .
Harry dice. "¡No! ¡Es una pintura de un millón de dólares! ... ¿Qué? ...
No, I want fifty thousand, not five! . . .
No, quiero cincuenta mil, ¡no cinco! . . .
What? . . .
¿Qué? . . .
The painting?
¿La pintura?
Yes, I have it, and it's OK."
Sí, lo tengo, y está bien ".

Janey is looking for old newspapers.
Janey está buscando periódicos viejos.

Early on Friday mornings, she takes them from every room in the house.
Los viernes por la mañana temprano, los saca de todas las habitaciones de la casa.

Then later, the newspaper recycling truck arrives.

Luego, más tarde, llega el camión de reciclaje de periódicos.

Janey opens Harry's door and looks into his room.

Janey abre la puerta de Harry y mira su habitación.

She always takes his old newspapers or bottles for recycling.

Ella siempre lleva sus viejos periódicos o botellas para reciclar.

"Ah!" she thinks. "There's a newspaper under Harry's bed."

"Ah!" ella piensa. "Hay un periódico debajo de la cama de Harry".

Janey puts the old newspapers into a black recycling box.
Janey pone los viejos periódicos en una caja de reciclaje negra.

She runs from the house and sees the truck.

Ella sale corriendo de la casa y ve el camión.

"Wait!" she says. And she quickly gives the box to one of the men.
"¡Espere!" ella dice. Y ella rápidamente le da la caja a uno de los hombres.

Harry is coming back to the house.

Harry está regresando a la casa.

He sees the recycling truck, and he sees Janey.

Él ve el camión de reciclaje, y ve a Janey.

"It's Friday!" he says. "The newspaper—! Oh, no!"

Harry chases after the truck.
Harry persigue el camión.

"Wait! Wait!" he says.

Janey watches him. "What is he doing?" she thinks.

Harry jumps into the back of the truck.

Harry salta a la parte trasera del camión.

"I want my newspaper!" he says. "Where's my newspaper?"

"¡Quiero mi periódico!" él dice. "¿Dónde está mi periódico?"

But there are thousands of newspapers in the truck.

Pero hay miles de periódicos en el camión.

Janey walks quickly from the house to the truck.
Janey camina rápidamente de la casa al camión.

"Why is your newspaper important, Harry?" she asks.

"It's two days old."

But Harry doesn't hear her. He is thinking, "My million dollar

painting! Where is it?"

The men from the recycling truck are watching Harry, too.

But now Janey is looking at Harry's shoe.

"There's some blue glass in Harry's shoe," Janey thinks.
"Hay un vaso azul en el zapato de Harry", piensa Janey.

"Where—? Oh!"

Suddenly, she remembers the photo of the blue glass vase on the TV.
De repente, recuerda la foto del jarrón de cristal azul en la televisión.

She looks again at the piece of glass in Harry's shoe.

Ella mira de nuevo el pedazo de vidrio en el zapato de Harry.

"Is it from the vase in the art gallery?" she thinks. "Is Harry Black the thief?"
"¿Es del jarrón en la galería de arte?" ella piensa. "¿Harry Black es el ladrón?"

The men from the recycling truck are angry.
Los hombres del camión de reciclaje están enojados.

"We're going now," they are saying. "We're late."

"Nos vamos ahora", están diciendo. "Llegamos tarde."

"But I want my newspaper!" Harry says.

"¡Pero quiero mi periódico!" Harry dice.
In the house, Janey is talking to the police on the telephone.
En la casa, Janey está hablando con la policía por teléfono.

"Maybe I'm wrong," she is saying. "

"Tal vez me equivoque", dice ella. "

But there's blue glass in his shoe . . . What?

Pero hay cristal azul en su zapato. . . ¿Qué?

. . . Yes, he's looking for the newspaper now."

. . . Sí, él está buscando el periódico ahora ".

Two policemen arrive quickly.
Dos policías llegan rápidamente.

"Let's look at your shoe," they say to Harry.

"Veamos tu zapato", le dicen a Harry.

Harry doesn't understand. "What's wrong?" he asks.

Harry no entiende. "¿Qué pasa?" él pide.

One of the policemen takes the glass from Harry's shoe.

Uno de los policías toma el vaso del zapato de Harry.
"This is a very expensive piece of glass," he says. "From a very expensive vase. Remember?"
"Esta es una pieza de vidrio muy cara", dice. "De un jarrón muy caro. ¿Recuerdas?"

Suddenly, Harry understands. "Oh, no!" he says.

De repente, Harry entiende. "¡Oh no!" él dice.

Police cars and policemen arrive.
Llegan los coches de policía y los policías.

The men look in the truck for the million-dollar painting.

Los hombres buscan en el camión la pintura del millón de dólares.

Later, they find the right newspaper and they find the painting.
Más tarde, encuentran el periódico correcto y encuentran la pintura.

"Good work, Janey," one of the policemen says.

"Buen trabajo, Janey", dice uno de los policías.

"And there's a reward."

"Y hay una recompensa".

"Maybe I can buy a painting with the reward!"

"¡Tal vez pueda comprar una pintura con la recompensa!"

Janey says. "I like pictures!"

Janey dice. "¡Me gustan las fotos!"
